The Sir David English Sports Centre

14/1/2000:The Sir David English Sports Centre now open!

November 26th, 1999 heralded the dawn of a new era at Bournemouth School as the Sir David English Sports Centre was officially opened by Nikki English, daughter of Sir David, and Paul Dacre from Associated Newspapers, which provided £100,000 of funding in his memory.

Situated at the top of the Castle Lane playing fields, the centre includes two fitness suites, a multi-purpose sports hall with two full-size basketball courts and eight badminton courts, eight outdoor tennis and netball courts and finally a full size all-weather training pitch for football and hockey.

These images, taken on 11th January 2000, show the rewards of many years of campaigning and fundraising by the school. The campaign was chaired by the late Sir David English until his death in 1998 and was subsequently led by former headmaster Allan Petrie. Funding for the project was a combination of parental, Old Boys' and local business contributions together with Lottery and Sports Council grants, jointly sought with the East Dorset Netball Association, which now shares the excellent facilities the centre has to offer.

The management of the sports hall is being handled by Holmes Place Leisure Management, who can be contacted for membership and hiring details by telephone on (01202) 859503, fax on (01202) 859504 or at the following address:
