FDG202 - Organising and managing the teaching of Numeracy and ICT

FDG 202 - Session 2

Outcomes:

Quest of Nine - as a starter together (off-line)

Function block ITP - not yet available on-line (but there is a copy in the ITP folder I made available in the first 2 sessions).

Can you find out what these function machines are doing? Can you work this out mentally? Would it be simpler if you made notes? Do you think children would need a recording sheet to help organise their results? (If you want to experiment with/adapt the sheet, you will have to save it, rather than open it).

Video from LandT CDs - Y1 Adding Pairs.

Discus how and when the following could be used - you may wish to refer to the NNS (National Numaracy Strategy).

Where there are notes on BECTA's Numeracy INSET pages - I've put in a direct link to them - I've linked to the PDF version, but they are also available in as Word documents.

  • Sam Lava and/or Dottie Double
  • Duck's Digits - notes.
  • Three dart checkout - notes
  • DFEE counting activity
  • NNS Number Line orElectronic number line from Digitalbrain
  • Feedback

Dominoes - calculator activity - notes.

The role of calculators in the primary school - Virtual Teacher Centre, BECTA. This document gives the official advice, along with a number of suggested activities for Years 5 & 6. We will probably play two of them during the session (Frac Attack & the Price is Right) Currency converter (for Price is Right).

Calculator discussion from the March 2003 On-Line Numeracy INSET. Probably only the comments of Sian Williams of any value.

Download digiface font from this site - suitable for classroom wall displays. When you have saved the font file, drag it into the folder:
    My Computer > C: drive > WINDOWS > FONTS

    On-line calculators

Interactive Teaching Programs (ITPs) NNS publications page (there are other resources on this page well worth looking at). We'll screen capture at least one of these - and amend it in Paint. If time - more activities listed at Mathzone and Nrich - but concentrate on those involving number (rather than shape, etc.).

To finish off with we'll meet Monty - on-line.
