Two members of our Cricket Club, Colin Cartwright and Peter Eckels walked
a section of the greatest wall in the world earlier this year raising over
£5000 for charity.
With one in three people affected in some way by cancer, Colin and Peter
recognise that the
Scottish based charity Maggie’s Cancer Caring Centres
deserve any support that they can give.
Maggie’s network of centres
are located next to major cancer treatment centres across the UK,
offering
information and support to patients and families affected by this dreadful
disease.
The need for Maggie’s Centres is huge.
In total 70 people from across the UK flew to Beijing to complete the
walk that took in
the famous Jinshanling to Simatai section of the wall,
as well as experiencing the surrounding
countryside and village life in China.
The walk was very arduous for participants walking
for six to eight hours
a day for five days, camping under the stars and scrambling to the highest
tower in the 4,000 miles of the whole wall at Wanjiing Lou (960 metres).
Participants committed to prepare themselves thoroughly for this personal
challenge
and the solitude of this magnificent structure. As well as the
obvious time commitment,
participants needed to train for the physical demands
of the treck, making sure that they had the right
clothing and equipment,
and arranging visas, and injections.
Colin and Peter would like to thank all those who supported this wonderful venture. If you would like additional information about the walk contact Colin on 0779076235 or Peter on 07802 771225.
