Kobukan Karate Club was formed in 1971 by Richard Copeland and has used
the Dolphin Centre as its base since the opening in 1982. Training also
takes place at Eastbourne School.
All classes are taken by experienced Instructors, who have trained with many of the leading 'Martial Arts Exponents'. The club is a member of the Wado Ryu Aiwakai Karate Do Federation and the Wado Kai England Karate Do Federation, headed by 'Sensei Sakagami 7th Dan. INSTRUCTORS Chris Hemmins 4th Dan Wado Ryu Karate Translated to mean 'Way of Peace School.' Wado Ryu has become one of the foremost Karate styles with all aspects of Wado Ryu being taught in a traditional manner. Classes are structured for all ages from seven onwards. There are separate classes for children and adults which cater for novices, intermediates and through to the more advanced students. Karate has become a way of life to men, women and children of all ages. Training Anyone can train at Karate and apart from self defence the training offers an excellent way of improving fitness and helps develop self awareness, self confidence and self esteem. Due to the nature of the sport, discipline and safety are of paramount impertance, particularly with children's classes and this helps to develop good manners and respect. There are various classes held throughout the week and for students with a more competitive nature, the club also promotes entry into local and national competitions. To help introduce new students to the basics of Karate, the club regularly holds a beginners course at the Dolphin Centre and Gladstone Street School Activity Centre. After the course has been completed the students are awarded their first grade and then moved into the main classes to progress through the various grades. KARATE Karate - as Physical Fitness Karate - as Self Defence Karate - as Sport Karate - as 'DO' A Way of Life Grades Depending on ability, students may take a grading approximately every three to four months. This is not only a test of the individuals skills, it also signifies a step forward with each step being marked with a coloured belt. Eventually the student who wishes to progress, will take their 1st Dan Black Belt to be followed over the years by further Dan gradings. A Licence/Record Book is required as an official record of grades taken and cover for the student, and is renewable annually. |
