How much TIME would I need to give?

What does the Town Council do?  How much time would I need to give?  What do I get out of doing this?

Pre-election
As a candidate you will need to give a couple of hours a week in the lead up to the elections. This will come in blocks of time rather than simply a couple of hours a week. You will need to get to grips with your area and what the Town Council does.

Election
As a candidate you will need to put many hours in, doing most weekday evenings and the weekends. Election eve and day is an all out effort!

As a Councillor
Wednesday evening is when the Town Council and Committees meet. Normal start time is 7.30pm.

Council meetings take between 15 - 30 minutes. There are 7 meetings a year.

Committees, where the real business takes place, can take anything between 1 to 2 hours. The number of meetings depends on which Committees you are assigned. Planning has 12 meeting a year. The others have 6 meeting a year.

There are also 4 sub-committees which meet on an ad-hoc basis and normally during the daytime. Usually members who are retired or have spare time are assigned these sub-committees.

If you have 2 main committees, Leisure and General purposes, and Council this would equate to 19 meetings a year.

Your will also have to read your agendas, which will take between 20 minutes to a couple of hours depending on length and depth and the amount of research needed to be put in.

If in power, we would need to have Group Meetings to bring forward policies and make decisions on the way forward. There may be a need for pre-meeting to thrash out controversial decisions.

There are also other events which you may be requested to attend.
