Individual Methods for Feeding
Methods - Practices
Whole Nuts
The practices outlined in this section relate
to methods of food presentation that do not require the use of special materials or
devices. Scatter feeds, use of specific locations, and methods of ensuring that specific
animals receive required medications and dietary supplements are dealt with.
Whole Nuts |
| Method |
Large, hard nuts such as walnut
scattered in the enclosure. Whole coconuts also provided for mammals. |
| Species |
Peccary, Babirusa, Chimpanzee,
Parrots. |
| Purpose |
Difficult food to break into,
requiring time and effort to obtain the reward. |
| Pro |
Keeps tooth growth in check
(Peccaries / Babirusa). Uncracked nuts last for a long time, and can be left in the
enclosure for foraging animals to find. |
| Con |
Food lying in enclosures attracts
vermin. Large amounts of coconut can cause diarrhoea in chimpanzees. |
