Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design
Pebble Beach
The methods outlined in this section relate to
features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living
conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms
and climbing structures.
Pebble Beach |
| Method |
Area of the enclosure with small
to medium sized smooth pebbles as the underfoot substrate. |
| Species |
Penguins, Ibis. |
| Purpose |
Provide a different substrate,
simulating some of the natural habitat. The varied shape of the pebbles is less abrasive
on feet than concrete. |
| Pro |
-- |
| Con |
Pebbles become very slippery in
summer due to algal growth, as a result of poor drainage from concrete underneath the
pebbles. |
| Improvements |
Increase drainage by removing
concrete under-surface. |
| Comments |
Although pebbles are better for
the condition of the birds feet, many birds selectively choose not to stand in pebble
areas. |
| Frequency
of Use |
Constant. |
