Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design
Multi-Tiered Pools
The methods outlined in this section relate to
features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living
conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms
and climbing structures.
Multi-Tiered
Pools |
| Method |
Split level enclosures allowing
several pools, with water draining from the highest into the lowest level, and pumped back
to the top. |
| Species |
Water Birds. |
| Purpose |
To provide a large area of aerated
water that can be used for several linked enclosures. |
| Pro |
Keeps water moving, and allows
large water surface area without an excessive depth on uneven or hilly ground. |
| Con |
Must drain to remove leaves in
autumn. During summer, algal bloom can be a problem. Spread of disease or chemical
contamination is a risk with multi-enclosure pool. |
