Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design

The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

| Method | Telegraph pole situated in outdoor enclosure allows a view from the top out of the enclosure and across surrounding countryside and the zoo. The pole can only be used by one individual at a time. | |

| Purpose | Provide viewpoint to see out of the enclosure. Male Diana monkeys in the enclosure shared with gorillas use the pole to display to the second group of Diana monkeys housed in the Monkey House. | |

| Comments | The pole in the chimpanzee enclosure is used by all of the males, though currently there is no clear dominance hierarchy. During male displays, the threatened individual will climb to the top, with the others chasing. At present, construction work with a crane near the enclosure attracts a lot of attention. Pole should be outwith jumping distance to the enclosure roof or public areas. | |
