Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design
Living Trees and Large Bushes
The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

| Purpose | Provide free moving, variable perches, shade and shelter, and a visual barrier. Insectivores may further supplement their diet with naturally occurring insects attracted to the trees, and can spend considerable time foraging. | |
| Pro | Natural, self replenishing, constantly vary in appearance, texture, scent and provision of foods (leaves, twigs, flowers, fruit, insects). | |
| Con | New bushes are prone to being destroyed by enclosure inhabitants. | |

| Comments | Non-toxic trees should be used, particularly if the animals in question may eat leaves or branches. Should ensure that animals cannot escape from the enclosure using the tree to get over fences. A mesh screen placed around a newly introduced tree or bush will help to protect it until it becomes established in the enclosure. | |
