Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design
Hessian Sacking
The methods outlined in this section relate to features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms and climbing structures.

| Method | Vertical strips of sacking create a screen between locations within the enclosure, and to the public area. | |

| Purpose | Provide a visual barrier from the public, and also. between dominant males and juvenile/subordinate males, to reduce threats and aggression. | |
| Pro | Very cheap. | |
| Con | Does not last long with destructive species. Where the dominant male controls aggression with stare threats, could result in more serious disputes ‘behind his back’. | |
| Improvements | Tie knots onto the bottom of strips, with or without peanuts inside. Some primates, for example, Allen’s Swamp Monkey spend a long time unpicking knots. | |
| Comments | A juvenile male Diana Monkey has been able to remain within the group until at least 5 years of age without problems arising with the dominant male. | |
