Individual Methods for
Enclosure Design
Egg-laying Sites
The methods outlined in this section relate to
features of enclosure construction and layout which may be used to enhance the living
conditions of animals, including the use of shelter areas, vegetation, viewing platforms
and climbing structures.
Egg-laying Sites |
| Method |
Halved shells of coconut placed
upside down over a plastic lid or plant watering tray (for frogs), wooden blocks with a 3
inch deep hollow in them for laying eggs in (geckos). |
| Species |
Poison Arrow Frog, Day Gecko. |
| Purpose |
Provide suitable shelter for
egg-laying. |
| Pro |
Cheap and effective, coconut
shells do not look too unnatural. |
| Con |
Wooden blocks look out of place. |
| Improvements |
Could use artificial material
(fibre glass), which can be moulded and coloured to blend in better. |
| Comments |
Once eggs have been laid, they are
removed to the zoos breeding unit to be incubated and hatched under carefully
monitored conditions. |
| Frequency
of Use |
