Animal Kingdom

Disney's Animal Kingdom consists of five "lands," just like the Magic Kingdom and opened to the general public in May of 1998.

It is an accredited zoological park with hundreds of wonderful animals, exhibits, and rides. The centre piece of the entire park is a monstrous structure called the Tree of Life. It is 14 stories tall and is covered with over 300 different animal carvings. It is a true work of art.

The Oasis

Upon entering the park you wind through The Oasis, a small tropical paradise filled with many different animals and plants. This area is meant to help guests unwind and relax before setting out on their adventure.

Safari Village

Past Oasis Gardens is Safari Village. This is where the tree of life is located and is the main way station to all of the other lands. It is filled with great shops, restaurants, and shows. It is also the venue for the parade.

Try to spend a little admiring the exquisite workmanship of the carvings on the Tree of Life as you make your way beneath its roots to view the 3D show "Its tough to be a Bug".

Dinoland USA

Dinoland USA is is one of the most exciting areas of the park, because contained in this land is "Countdown To Extinction"- a thrill ride to rival Splash Mountain, The Tower of Terror, and Space Mountain put together. It is has the newest state of the art animation and ride technology although it is incredibly loud. Also in this land is a simulated archaeological dig where guests can excavate a full scale dinosaur skeleton and a nature trail with some throw backs from the cretaceous period.

Note: This is also the location for wonderful live action stage shows, On our first visit we watched "Journey into Jungle Book". In 2002 the show had changed to "Tarzan Rocks". By the time we returned in 2007 it was Finding Nemo - the musical. All shows featured our favourite songs and moments from these great movies.

Africa (Harambe Village)

Africa houses the bulk of the large animals including herds of hippos, elephants, and giraffes. The best way to see them all is to take the Kilimanjaro Safari ride. The free roaming animals in their reserves means that your experience of encountering the animals will never be the same twice.

But of course this is Disney so be on the lookout for a few surprises along the way and hold on tight to the handrails of your vehicle as you travel along the uneven roads pockmarked with ditches.

Afterwards catch the train from Harambe to Conservation Station to explore behind the scenes of this fabulous park and meet some of the animals close up in Affection Section.

Asia (Kingdom of Anandapur "place of all delights")

The Kali River Rapids take you through a beautiful tropical rain forest. Depending on your seating position in this ride you could escape a soaking but there again .....

Don't miss viewing the wildlife in the Maharajah Jungle Trek especially the gorillas and beautiful tigers.

Make sure you check the show schedule of the "Flights of Wonder" bird adventure at the Caravan Stage and enjoy the antics of colourful exotic birds from around the world.

New to us in 2007 was Expedition Everest - a fantastic rollercoaster ride. Soo good we did it three times!!

Camp Minnie-Mickey

A must for all ages but especially for the little ones. Here you can meet the characters from the Jungle Book, the Lion King, and many others.

Do Not Miss "Festival of the Lion King" - an incredible, frenetic, acrobatic extravaganza featuring all your favourite characters from "The Lion King" - believe me, you will not be disappointed!!!

If you are planning to visit Disney World you may wish to set aside a couple of days for Animal Kingdom alone.
