Wirral100, Oulton Park, 18 April 2009
We checked out the wiring on the Honda but could not find anything obviously wrong that would explain our misfortunes at Brands. So with a change of spark plug, hoping that would cure the problem, it was fingers crossed for Round 2 of the Wirral100 Club Championship. In the first practice/qualifying session the problem was still present so no surprises there! With the lack of power I could only qualify on the second last row of the grid.
I suspected that the misfire could be related to the quickshifter so we decided to change two of the map settings on the BPS. Map 'A' was set as it was at Brands but with a lower sensitivity on the quickshifter pressure setting. Map 'D' was programmed with the quickshifter off. Normally we keep Map 'D' as a safe setting but somehow a different Map had found its way in there.
In Race 1 we proved that the quickshifter was the culprit as Map 'D' was the only setting that cured the misfire. However, I was now getting too many detonations on full throttle so I backed off and brought the Honda home in last place. Better safe than sorry. We were already using a 200 main jet so it looked as if the ignition could be retarded a couple of degrees to reduce he detonation. We're still relative novices in the 2-stroke set up game as you can probably gather!
Dad took the quickshifter apart and cleaned it all up before Race 2 but as it turned out it didn't make any difference. Back to Map 'D' for the race and I could only make up three positions before the chequered flag. Not such a grand performance on track but on a positive note we got to the bottom of the misfire and worked out the gearing for the bank holiday BSB meeting in May.
See ya.
