Welcome to East
Glasgow History
A site dedicated to
preserving the history of the eastern districts of Glasgow,
Scotland.
Updated - August, 2006.
I've
finally been able to locate the site on "new premises" and hopefully
will be able to provide an update on 1st November. Until then, the
most recent update will remain August's
If
you have come to this page, you have come to the old web site which will not be
updated beyond August, 2006. For the most recent versions of the site, which
have been re-located in cyberspace, go to any of the domain names listed below.
Welcome to the August edition
of the site and the first update for a while!
From previous Introductions,
you might be aware that Thomas Waugh passed away recently. His wife Isabel
has very kindly given her permission for me to reproduce his two books about
Shettleston here on my site. These are commonly regarded as the main
references for Shettleston, and several visitors to the site have already sought
information from them. They are no longer in print, and I have no doubt
that Mrs Waugh's very generous gesture in allowing them to be made available
electronically will be greatly appreciated by many.
I won't be able to produce
them all at once, and it is my intention to do so by adding sections each
month. I hope to start next month with "Shettleston from Old and New
Photographs", with lead in texts and Section 1. I hope you enjoy
this. They will be placed under the "Books & Articles"
Section of the site.
Jim
McKenna is preparing for the production of the second edition of his book,
"Last Exit from Bridgeton: An East End Childhood Remembered."
For all of you who may have missed it first time around, the details for
obtaining a copy can be found in the Bits & Pieces section.
Thanks to Raymond Hill
who took the time to send me a photograph of Tollcross Cemetery taken in the
1950s - it's in the Memories section.
Margaret Hunter was
asking whether the Olympia cinema at Bridgeton Cross was still there.
Despite a serious fire recently, the building is still there Margaret and
remains unused. You can see a brief history in the Books & Articles
section, under my Bridgeton history book.
If you have
written information you would like to post - contact me for an address.
Any photos you have of social events or of your district would be appreciated
too and would be returned after scanning.
Remember to refresh your pages or you may miss
any updates. Check the information section at the bottom of each page; it
should indicate the date of the update - if it doesn't, refresh your
screen. For each month's update, have a look at What's
New. It will provide you with a summary rather than working your way
through the entire site.
If you wish to provide
any information or even articles for inclusion in the Contributions or elsewhere, have any comments to make, or experience any
difficulties, please contact me. Otherwise, I hope you find the site
informative and entertaining. With best wishes,
Gordon Adams
