Conservation: - Since opening in 1990 the Owl Centre has always been involved in the rescue of sick and injured wild birds of prey. Throughout the years hundreds of injured owls, buzzards, falcons and even swans have been brought to the centre for rehabilitation. Injuries are mainly road traffic accidents but occasionally we have seen the darker side of human nature with the shooting of swans and falcons and even crossbow fatalities. There are times when some casualties have to be euthanased but over the years are success rates have been high. During one twelve month period we had 49 Tawny Owls arrive at the Centre from all over the North East. Of these, 7 were put to sleep, homes were found for 3 and the remaining 39 were returned to the wild! Although the majority of the rescue work centres around birds of prey, facilities permitting other species are also cared for. Kirkleatham Owl Centre also participates in endangered species breeding programmes. The Centre's work is only achieved with the dedicated support of all the staff. Not just working in the Owl Centre but out at schools, talks and shows, animal collections and fund raising events.
