The EU Photonic Roadmap – Harnessing the speed of light

Collaborative European research project OPTIMIST worked with more than 60 projects in the European Commissions’ ‘Framework Programme 5’.  One of its major achievements was the completion of the EU Photonic Roadmap, a substantial, detailed and highly technical perspective of research and development in photonic networks and technologies in Europe .  Gtel Consultancy was invited to write the text for a brochure summarising the Roadmap for a non-specialist, senior management audience.  The result gave the key project results set against the rapidly changing market and was written to the highest journalistic standards.  4000 copies of the brochure were produced and distributed widely around the European Commission, the academic community and to senior managers in the European photonics industry.

Research project evaluation and monitoring

Gtel provides contract monitoring services to the DTI, under the OSDA Programme – for the SOAPS and PROTAGON collaborative research projects.

It has provided Technical evaluation services to the European Commission in the Framework 6 programme – within the theme ‘Broadband for All’.

Evaluation of the Centre for Communications, Optics and Materials, Denmark

This was an evaluation report commissioned by the Danish Technical Research Council.  Goff Hill and three other experts were invited to participate in a four person international scientific panel with the task of performing an evaluation of the Danish Research Centre for Communications, Optics and Materials (COM), prior to a Danish government review.

Special editor for the IEEE

Goff Hill has been special editor for IEEE publications on two occasions.  The first was for a special edition of the widely circulated IEEE Communications Magazine, featuring ‘Optical Network Technology in Europe ’.  The second was for a special issue of the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, jointly prepared with the Journal of Lightwave Technology featuring ‘Optical Networks’.
