Prepare Skins, Hinges, LE, etc

a.        I’ve tried two styles of Skins, Kevlar (1.7 Oz) two piece
(Sheared 20-20 from LE to Hinge and 45-45 from Hinge to TE)     11 Raw Kevlar.JPG (31550 bytes)        See March 2004 Update at foot for third Lay-up

      12 Sheared Kevlar.JPG (22181 bytes)

and Glass (1 Oz, 45-45 all over).                                                           27 Glass 45 Cheat wet out.JPG (24029 bytes)

The Kevlar is much heavier but also stiffer and stronger.

b.       If using Kevlar the 20-20 piece on the hinge side extends back past the hinge by 10mm so that it can be used as the hinge. On the Glass style a 15mm wide strip of 20-20 Sheared Kevlar is placed in the lay-up at the hinge position (One side only).

c.        The LE can be a 45-45 glass strip (Light in weight but an absolute pain to handle) or a composite Glass/Kevlar strip (Heavier but much easier to handle and a much much tougher  LE)

d.       If using Kevlar, shear the cloth (i.e. Pull the ends) and then           13 Marked Out Kevlar.JPG (38892 bytes)
mark out the LE to Hinge shape using a Fabric marker pen (My one is labelled TrickMarker, these are great as the marks fade away over a day or so, or even quicker with a dab of water).

e.      The 45-45 cloth pieces are just marked out and cut,                       14 Kevlar Pieces.JPG (28193 bytes)
then you need to be very careful with handling as they will stretch if you even look at them hard. A carrier to put them on and a place to store them all pre arranged is a good idea, you do not want to be shuffling them round on the bench to make space!!

f.        I tried to do a 20-20, 45-45 with the 1Oz Glass but the cloth handling defeated me.

g.       You can also use baking paper (grease proof paper) as a backing with a light mist of 3M77 on it. This makes that parts easier to move about and far more stable, but if you use too much spray glue you’ll have a real job detaching the backing sheet. I’ve found this a very hit and miss technique. Recent posts say use a “3M Post It” glue stick (this is NOT a normal glue stick, but a similar adhesive to Post It Notes), but I’ve been unable to find these in the UK yet.

March 2004 Update:

i) Well I got some 3M - post it Glue sticks (Thanks Marc) and did a 1 Oz Kevlar tail using the baking sheet templates as carriers for the cloth. So here in pictures is what I did. Click on an image to get a larger view.
