First in, and trying to make it all too complicated was this from The Gobmeister's brother Nigel:
Hi Bro'
with regards to the competition set on the last show there would seem to be a lack of information.
I haven't a clue which part of Gloucester, Robert is going to, so I'm basing my answers on travelling to the city centre from his house.
If he were to take the shortest route (which is probably unlikely as Robert is navigating ( which, by the way, I think may be just as dangerous as if he were driving, given his visual status)) the distance would be approximately 231 miles there and back. However, if he were to take the quickest route then the distance would be 364 miles. However, he could box clever here and take one route one way and the other on return which, by my calculations would be 297.5 miles.
Consequently there are three possible answers here based on the information to hand. I trust that all three answers are acceptable for the competition. If you could give a more precise destination then I could come up with a more accurate result. I assume that there are no limits to the number of entries here.
Just to summarise my answers, they are as follows :-
231 Miles (Calculated shortest route)
364 Miles (Calculated quickest route)
297.5 Miles (Calculated combination of above two)
Regards
The Golfmeister
To which The Gobmeister replied:
Hi Nige,
You may only make one entry to the mileage competition, otherwise The Gobmeister would get deluged by dozens of entries from each listener. Please decide which of your 3 answers you wish to put forward.
G.
At this point Nigel got a bit of a strop on:
Hi G,
as previously mentioned, can you advise as to the precise location in Gloucester that Robert is going to please or I'm not going to play and throw my rattle at you! If that doesn't scare you I'll get out of my pram and SHOUT!
N.
To which The Gobmeister's firm but fair rebuke was:
You are all in the same boat!
With hindsight "You are all in the same PRAM" might have been funnier. Oh well, nevermind. Meanwhile, Aarron was joining in:
Salutations, I almost forgot about the competition. Whereabouts in
Gloucester is Robert going? it will make a difference.
Regards
Aarron.
Hi Aarron,
....... regarding the mileage competition: as I have also said to Nigel, you are working with the same lack of info as everyone else! Just have a guess! It's a sweepstake. One entry only per person, but remember, more than one person can enter........(!). Savvy?
Laters dudes,
G.
Now, Aarron is the sort of guy who knows how to pick up the baton and run with it (metaphorically speaking). Maybe this is because he shares his birthday with The Gobmeister. Anyhow, it therefore came as no surprise when this landed in The Gobmeister's email inbox:
Hello there, please find below our "family" guesses for the mileage for
Roberts trip:
Aarron - 155 Miles
Laura - 186 Miles
Chloe - 183 Miles
Scott - 170 Miles
Pebbles (Cat) - 160 Miles
This is for one way only. If you want return journeys please double the
above guesses.
Regards
Aarron.
You see? Initiative and enthusiasm in equal measure! Buoyed by this effort, The Gobmeister sought to glean clarification from Nigel:
Hi Nige,
I can't remember whether you gave your official entry to the mileage competition. Tip, someone has submitted one entry for each member of their family, including their cat (Pebbles)!
This does not contravene any of the rules.
Awaiting your reply.....,
G.
Hi Graham,
can I claim multi personality disorder???
I could get a note from my doctor to prove I have schizophrenia if I have to but for now just pick two of my previous answers on behalf of myself and Buster.
(Editor: Buster is Nigel's cat)
N.
Hi Nige (& Buster),
by a rather inventive, some might say innovative, and gravity-driven drawing of lots* (allowing God to be the architect of the outcome), your answers to the Gloucester mileage competition have been allocated thus:
Nigel: 231 miles
Buster: 297.5 miles
* The method used involved writing names / numbers on little scraps of paper and letting them flutter to the ground.
Amazingly, that was it! No more entries came in. Bit disappointing really. Right, so what was the answer, and who won?
|
The actual mileage declared by Robert was 270. Closest was Buster with 297.5. Yes, you've all been beaten by Nigel's cat. Buster therefore wins the prize: a pair of CD's containing Robert's used and unused source material for GobFM "Battle Of The D.J.s", plus a 4 CD set of Johnny 5's! Buster will be receiving those shortly.
To finish with, here is a photo of our winner. Now, is it just The Gobmeister, or does anybody else think of Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" when they look at this picture? |
