Now whenever I am asked? Do I believe in ghosts?
“Or a similar sort of silly question”
“And when people find out what I do, I am asked a lot you understand”
I always respond, “Well I have never seen a ghost, its is the Quest which
Spurs me on.
I have felt and heard so much you see, I have seen glasses fly off tables, I have seen tables
Walk across a room. I have heard things being thrown and felt cold spots all over
I have experienced many vigils in all sorts of locations, but as yet I have not seen a ghost
Mediums fascinate me; they know for a fact what we all want to believe
They have seen beyond our existence, and know the secrets of our dreams
Its not that I believe or don’t believe, I am sceptic by nature that much is true
It’s just that each time I go on a vigil, I seem to come away with more questions than I went with
Enter Buckingham House in Portsmouth
We arrived at this location with limited knowledge of the building, or its past.
The Duke of Buckingham apparently was murdered here in 1629, His throat cut
And he bled to death.
A male spirit has been Reported “a whistler” in the cellar.
Reports of Children in the top of the house and we were told this was very active
Normally we don’t like to know any details before we start, but here I think it would of made
little difference.
We started with a walk round with “the Medium” (a rather famous one of Most Haunted fame no less)
We had met before and he is and entertaining chap, who told us how active this place was.
We went in the panel room, which contained of a large table approx 18 feet long and enough chairs
to seat 20 or so people. Some of the chairs were more like thrones than standard dinning room chairs
So of course we had to try them, have our picture taken in these surroundings and with a celebrity
The room was paneled and appeared to be 400 years old, all reproduction of course
It felt very heavy, like it had not been aired for quite a while yet the ventilation in the room seemed
More than adequate
We went into a small room, which may or may not have a name; if it did I did not hear it,
This room had a much lighter atmosphere; it felt more jovial and happy, ok I guess you had to be there
but it did not feel at all like the panel room, none the less unusual.
The Medium said that he did not think that this room was currently active but had been recently
Intriguing if nothing else.
We went on up the staircases to the top level and immediately felt like a very sad place, I can only
Compare it to a graveyard deep into the night, scary yes but very sad, this room He said was nearly always active. We had people who felt poorly here and some would not enter.
This was a room I felt we had to investigate.
The house has a cellar and a garden both with a reputation of mystery and unexplained activity
We did investigate both areas and found and felt nothing, I got the impression its reputation
Was more an enhancement to the property than anything else.
There are of course many other rooms in the house and a maze of staircases, landings and strange shaped Rooms, all very different than originally designed, the house has gone through much alteration
In it’s hundreds of years of history and it showed.
This report will deal with the three rooms mentioned above, as these were of main interest
We did investigate other area’s which although may well be active, did not appear so on the night.
The Small room.
The room was located on the ground floor, just above the cellar; the floor was very uneven as were all the floors for that matter. It was about 15 foot square, with two doors. And a larger than life open fire
Place for a room of that size and was completely devoid of furniture.
The atmosphere here felt happy, how to clarify this, people were jovial in this room. Not scared at all
A room that you would stay in alone, which in this house was indeed a rarity.
We did not find the room active at the time; we doused with rod and pendant, and got responses
Indicating presence, but did not really communicate with spirit.
I mention this room here because of the feeling of it, the atmospheric ambiance, how different if felt
To that of any other room in the house, and so very different to that of the attic rooms
We investigated the room twice, the first of the Vigils here I will describe as clearly as I remember it
This room was clearly active most of the night and was so on both the vigils we took part in.
The room itself is approximately 30 feet by 14 feet oblong in shape.
A large table 18 feet or so long and 6 feet wide, made of very sturdy wood in the manor long since
Abandoned for cheaper manufacturing methods. It is a reproduction of course but it looked appropriate
for this room. The walls were all covered in wood paneling again suggesting hundreds of years of history, and again all reproduction; the chairs around the table were all also period reproduction
some being throne like with very high ornate designs.
In the corner was Egyptian sarcophagus (not original or occupied) well I didn’t actually look inside
Its purpose eludes me, other than to say the designer probably had a guide dog
We sat down eight in number towards one end of the table, with the lights now off and only a glimmer of red light from one of our night vision torches we started our vigil.
The glass on the table was only in reach of 5 of us at any one time, so after we went through the protection, which in this case did include the Lords Prayer as two of our party requested it
We also performed other protection rituals, which are discussed elsewhere on this site.
After all present felt happy we placed our fingers on the glass and in this place as soon as we asked out
for any spirit to communicate with us. The glass moved. Straightaway “This one was keen” As before when I have done Glass scéance I was intently looking to see if someone at the table was manipulating the glass.
As the glass moved in response to our questions, it would go out of reach of some and into reach of others, but in most cases there were 5 out of 8 people giving energy to the glass.
No chance in my eyes that this was anything other than external energy.
We asked yes / no questions with movement of the glass denoting yes.
We found it was male spirit who worked here at the house as a Coachman. Irish by birth and keen
To talk to us, we asked if he wanted our help but with no movement of the glass we did not continue
with this line of questioning.
We used the alphabet to establish his name and counting down the decades/years we established he died in 1868, we also established he interacted with other spirit in the house and that another spirit female was also present and would speak to us.
We asked her to come forward, and move the glass to indicate presence and then to move the glass
Only If her answers to our questions were yes.
This appeared to be a spirit with more energy than before as the glass moved much more powerfully
Again using the alphabet we found her name and counting back years we established her
period in time, she said she was the mistress of the house from 1806 to 1832. Her name suggested she was European (In fact French). This puzzled us as we thought it unusual for a French citizen would be
in England during Nelsons finest hour. One member of our group asked a couple of questions in French
However to the spirits credit replied as before and did not appear phased at all.
We ended our vigil shortly after that as we heard noises from above like people moving furniture
and talking loudly. We also heard people outside the room walking up and down the stairs.
We went for a break, after checking with the people in the house, where as people may have been on the landing outside the room earlier, no one was in the house upstairs.
We argued that this was impossible as every one of us clearly heard talking and what appeared to be
furniture being dragged across the floor.
We would investigate the upstairs next including the attic rooms.
The Attic rooms.
Upstairs in the attic room I can only say that the atmosphere was not present.
It was heavy and sorrowful, upsetting several people
There were what appeared to be four rooms, a bedroom on the stairs, which in itself
Did not appear to be alarming a second bedroom, at the back of the house, which was being used
As a storeroom accessible but not practical for our investigations, this room had light from outside
Street lighting and did not feel concerning.
A kitchen, where straight away one of our party claimed to have seen a shadow figure at it rear
I ran to this area to see for myself could it be?
There was no sign of anything, but the air was very cold and our pulses racing
This is a place nobody wanted to be alone in and nobody was going to be.
The room next to the kitchen was the most dramatic of places and can only be described as a sad place.
It felt awful, very heavy, little air movement, although the windows were ajar.
The room itself was approx 13 foot square, one window offering no natural light at that time of night
A small table in the far corner and a larger table in the middle of the room, numerous chairs had been placed in this room, clearly to me this room had been investigated before, it really was the ideal setting
so atmospheric, and so right for any kind of vigil.
Our group of eight was now seated around the room expecting something to happen, some in anticipation and some I suggest a little afraid.
We called out for a spirit to make a sign, the room was silent, but we all felt it was ready to burst
“The Medium”, gathered us around the table and asked us to place our hands upon it, joined us
Table tipping it was then, now for those who have not seen this it can be very impressive
The idea is, we all place our hands on the table in a circle linking our little fingers. Then we share
our energy and concentrate on the table. The Medium then called out for any spirit to come to the table
to user our energy to move the table, lift the table, make a noise in the room , tap on the wall or table
show a sign of presence.
None of this worked, no noises at all and no movement.
We tried the Glass on the table, this room just had to be active. The atmosphere was alive. (Well maybe not)
I am not sure but it appeared to me that the glass started to move before we had called for a spirit
to communicate with us.
We asked the spirit if it was male, its age, its name, its purpose, where it died, many questions
But this one just wanted to play.
Only half answers to the questions, and the moving the glass faster and faster in a circle.
We could not keep our fingers on the glass.
The glass screeched like chalk on a blackboard, so loudly people from other vigils in the house came to the room to see what was happening.
The glass was moving so fast now it would turn over and run of the end of the table and as soon as it was put back it would start again.
This is as violent as I have known spirit energy, clearly if this energy was used against us
It would be very dangerous, and we would be stupid not to understand, that we have no
knowledge of the intentions of the force behind this energy.
We now had about 15 people in the room and It was time to close our vigil.
After removing our fingers from the glass and leaving the room I felt uneasy
The Panel room 2nd vigil
When we entered the panel room for the second time, it was already occupied by two of the other
Investigation teams, so collectively there were 20 people sat around the long table.
We decided to try and table tip the long table, now at this point I need to explain a bit more about this table. As I said before the table its about 20 feet long and is 6 feet wide. It is made of real wood
And is a quality reproduction of a very old table. It weighs enough so that the twenty people
Around the table would have difficulty lifting it.
Table tipping here would have to be some kind of record.
Well we gave it our best shot but this table was not for tipping
The room was as active now as anywhere we had been in this house.
The energy in this room now had built up to very high level; the feel of the room was now strangely
familiar, and I started to get a sense of disavow.
The spirit in this house was widely believed to be very powerful but would only communicate via a glass scéance. So be it.
Once again we put a glass on the table, I did not see how this could work, clearly 20 people could not
Be involved with one glass on such a big table. The solution was obvious.
Two glasses
We placed one glass at the end of the table we were at and one at the other, then split into two teams of 10 people and moved the chairs so that as many as possible could be in contact with the glass.
Approx 6 people in each group could reach the glass nearest to them at any one time.
My group started first and called out for spirit, straight away a response the glass moved as it had upstairs (we had not closed the table upstairs in the attic) the same spirit was with us again.
We asked was that the spirit John, again, and the glass started to fly round the table as before.
In a moment of inspiration I asked if John if he could move both glasses at the same time.
Instantly the other glass started to move in the same manor. The two glasses were moving with different teams, with different glasses.
We then asked if the John could move our glass for yes and the other glass for no
Could we prove Intelligence?
Unbelievable we asked questions of John who he was, when he lived here for each yes answer our glass moved and the other stayed still, and for each no answer our glass stayed still and the other moved.
John said that he killed the Duke of Buckingham, he got the date right but more importantly he told us
that the murder took place in the downstairs hallway; by the cellar door. The record books show that the murder took place in the bedroom on the 1st floor. Recent information known only to the curators of Buckingham House indicate that the Murder is more likely to of taken place in the hallway near the cellar door.
None of us could of known this.
To my knowledge never before has spirit energy been able to move two glasses independently
at the same time with different groups, and with changing people within each group,
no single person was involved in both groups at any time.
Information known only to a few curators was given
We had energy from an untraceable source, controlled by an unexplained source
Giving intelligent and meaningful answers
One step nearer to the Quest then
But with more questions than when we started the evening.
I have still never seen a ghost
