On foot from the house you can turn left towards Buxton and in barely 10 minutes you will be strolling in beautiful countryside or turn right and in less than 10 minutes will bring you into the centre of the pretty market town of Leek.
Leek is a town of great character situated on the edge of the Peak District, surrounded by splendid countryside. It has ancient markets, Victorian mills, historic churches and distinctive shops. Leek has remained relatively unspoilt though the ages, retaining much of its heritage. In recent years sensitive environmental improvements have been made, including the restoration of old courtyard areas off the main streets and the addition of distinctive street furniture which build on the town's character.
The open market, held every Wednesday in the Market Place which is still covered with cobbles, was first established by Royal Charter in 1208. Adjacent is the Butter Market (which Leek is famour for) which today houses stalls selling a variety of goods and produce. If you like antiques then you will find no better place as Leek has a glut of marvellous antique shops and emporiums. There is an interesting ‘flea’ market in the market place every Saturday.
Tittesworth reservoir, Meerbrook, 184-acre trout water is an ideal place for fishing. It is an ideal place to visit as part of a day out bringing to life local wildlife and the environment. Visit the new restaurant, giftshop or fascinating interactive exhibition, or simply have fun in the childrens’ playground.
Looking from the Roaches, the reservoir at Tittesworth is shown with Leek in the distance.
The Open Air Market on Market Day (Every Wednesday)
Special Note: Jane would be delighted to accompany you on a guided walk around the Tittesworth reservoir (commitments permitting), a beautifully scenic and easy 3-4 hour stroll. This is a free service but if you prefer to go unaccompanied, a map is available for your use. A picnic may be provided on request but the Coffee Shop in the Visitor‘s Centre (approx. half way round) is highly recommended. Outside tables provide fabulous views etc.
