Dallas-born Red Garland came to the attention of the wider Jazz audience as a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, quite possibly the most influential small Jazz band of the post war era. Garland had a romantic sound with a swinging bluesy feeling and used a block chord style, which involves voicing chords for each melody note, book-ended by octaves. Before joining up with Davis he had worked both in NY and Philadelphia with the likes of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, Billy Eckstine, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Ben Webster, Fats Navarro and Roy Eldridge. His growing reputation through the success of the Miles Davis Quintet led to a recording contract under his own name for Prestige. It marked the beginning of an impressive sequence of high quality recordings in a trio format with Paul Chambers on bass and Arthur Taylor on drums. By the end of  1957 Garland and his trio embarked on a fruitfull  recording relationship with his ex Miles Davis Quintet colleague John Coltrane. Garland moved back to Texas in 1968 and retired almost completely from playing. He died aged 59 in 1984.
