Unquestionably, a major career was cut short when Clifford Brown, a trumpet player of tremendous power and grace was killed in a 1956 car accident.  The first time ever he walked into a recording studio (on March 21, 1952), he was a 21-year old member of an obscure Philadelphia Rhythm and Blues Band. But four years and one day later, after he had recorded his final session, he had permanently changed the face of Jazz.  In this unbelievably short space of time, he had become one of the most influential and loved trumpet players. His incredible talent was obvious from the very beginning. Already in his student years Brown played with the best, Miles Davis, Fats Navarro, Dizzy Gillespie and J.J. Johnson. He played with Lionel Hampton and Art Blakey before forming in the mid-50s,  a close knit team with Max Roach one of the greatest innovators of modern drumming in the Cilfford Brown-Max Roach Quartet. His band included amongst others a young Sonny Rollins. For the two years of it's existence the band swept all comers before it and (thankfully) the band toured and recorded prolifically. In this band Brown produced his best work, both as a player and as a composer. He wrote several tunes that would become standards such as Joy Spring, Daahound, Gertrude's Bounce.
At a time when most modern Jazz trumpeters sought technical expertise at the expense of tone, Brown was able to develop a rich full tone with technique to spare. Throughout his playing career Brown displayed brilliant inventiveness, intelligence and emotional depth. His search for original ideas was never executed at the expense of taste, which is what makes Clifford Brown one of the true giants of Jazz.
