InhumanClub denies it was "inhuman" towards stewardess and family12th November 1962 - Secretary of Two Gates Working Men's club, Mr.T.E.Hawley has denied claims that the club has been "inhuman" towards the stewardess and her family who had been given notice to quit her job and tied flat. At a meeting of the Tamworth Health Committee on Monday, Councillor Cyril Wood claimed the Stewardess and her family of 2 children had been left for nearly three weeks without heat, lighting or cooking facilities. The clubs action in cutting off the facilities was described as inhuman by the Clerk of the Council, Mr.S.W.Dewes. Councillor wood said all the children had been upset by the action and one had suffered from hysteria because of the shadows in a candle-lit room and because no meals could be served. "I am not interested who is in the right or who is in the wrong, as far as the employers and employee are concerned" said councillor Wood. "What I am interested in is the suffering caused to the children." He said the stewardess was given one month's notice to leave the job and the club's flat, but during that period she and her family should have been able to enjoy the amenities they were paying for. NOT VILLAINS Mr Hawley replied to the critisism, "The Health Committee had not got a true picture", he said "There are only two young children in the family and they had been left without lighting and heating facilities for only a week.." The stewardess was given a month's notice to leave her job and flat. That notice expired on October 13 but the family did not move out until last Saturday. During the last month they had been running up electricity bills with their appliances and we had no way of checking how much electricity they were using so we had to cut it off. The flat has always been centrally heated and for the last few weeks the family has only been sleeping there. "We are not villains," said Mr.Hawley. |
