Kendama Home

The kendama is a traditional Japanese toy, similar to the classic 'cup and ball' game, but with far more possibilities. I've been playing with kendama for many years now, but for much of that time there were very few resources from which to learn. Back in 2003, in an attempt to share what little knowledge I had at the time, I published a webpage called A Brief Guide To The Kendama (which I'm leaving up, unchanged, as a bit of nostalgia!). Fortunately, since that time, kendama has gained much wider following. It's now easy to purchase good quality kendama products on-line and thanks to internet video streaming, it's now easy to get up speed.

So, what's worth checking out? Well, you certainly shouldn't miss the BKA site, which is now the central repository of British kendama information and also the home of TeamKD, the UK's first kendama team. It also includes lots of details that will help get you started, as well as information about forthcoming kendama-related events.

If you're just starting out, something else you won't want to miss is the tricklist video for the 2008 British Kendama Championships. This video gives clear demonstrations of 20 moves, from the most basic 'Big Cup' catch to the delicate 'Bird'. Should you actually want to see me in action, take a look at Kendama Variations. Of course, the newest online videos can always be found at sites like Juggling.tv or YouTube.
