Introduction
I have decided to keep an art diary
recording which days I work.
Giving information on the paintings
I am working on and, sometimes, my feelings about them.
12/04/2002
Finished drawing stage
of eighth painting in the Meditative Landscape series I am currently working
on. With this series I am not working from life but from abbreviated
ideas and structures I sketched out first.
|
15/04/2002
Working on painting
called "Landscape From A Garden" from new Meditative Landscape series.
Are these paintings too green biased?
|
16/04/2002
Finished "Landscape From
A Garden". I am quite pleased with the colours and spontaneous symbols.
Possibly the green hedge line should have been lighter.
Painted the perimeter of five other
Meditative Landscapes
|

|
29/04/2002
Continued working on "Landscape
From An Automobile". Using accidentally derived symbols in one passage,
|
30/04/2002
Finished "Landscape From
An Automobile". I quite like the combination turquise and yellow/green
in the background although it probably stands out too much. The paintings
may be too dark - This probably comes from me working too close to the
board. Started "Meditation In A Wood".
|
01/05/2002
Working on some of the
background symbols of "Bridge In A Landscape". Need now to find sources
for trees. "Continued working on "Meditation In A Wood". Principally
putting in the background scenery using a blue bias.
|
02/05/2002
Working on other set of
background symbols of "Bridge In A landscape". Doing foreground of
"Meditation In A Garden" - using a palette of browns. I am undecided
how to tackle the mid ground area.
|
03/05/2002

stage of "Meditation In A Wood". I am quite pleased with the effects
I am getting breaking up the green with brown and red brown.

elements in latter.
|
16/05/2002
Redid part of "Remembered
Landscape". Finished and then reworked "Bridge In A Landscape" -
will need to redo tomorrow: I am putting in realistic sections in abstracted
landscape but overworked it (should have left it more spontaneous).

part of "Landscape In Front Of The Sea" and "Garden Three" Working
from photos in books which is a new departure.
|
17/05/2002

painting.

of "Garden Three"

The effect is still not right but it is an improvement on what it was.
|
22/05/2002

Before The Sea". I felt the composition was a bit sparse so I repainted
part of the lower section.

and Transfiguration".
|
29/05/2002
Starting work on a new
Meditative Landscape - as yet unnamed. As the primer did not feel
fully set I did the initial drawing with acrylic - this proved far easier
than drawing with oils. With the latter I need a synthetic hog but
with acrylic I managed with a synthetic sable. I washed over the
completed drawing with water thinned acrylic.
I primed 4 16x20 and 4 12x16 hardboard
panels.
|
30/05/2002
Very little time today
- did a bit of painting on new Meditative Landscape.

Even less time today -
carried on with new Meditative Landscape.
|
03/06/2002

|
10/06/2002
Started work on two new
landscapes: "Metamorphoses In A Garden" and "Transfiguration In A Garden".
These works combine image sequence blocks with background landscapes.
The initial drawing in is done with thinned black acrylic.

a new landscape style which is derived from studies for large landscapes
I hope to start soon.
|
19/06/2002

pencil sketches under the title "Random Expressions".
Started another "Postcards From
Holidays In My Head".
|
24/06/2002
Working on both of the
"Postcards From Holidays In My Head". Filling in the paint areas.
I am using a mix of ordinary oils and watersoluble oils. I only have
a few of the latter left - mainly lemon yellow and naples yellow.
This has significantly lightened my palette!

25/06/2002
Completed both of
"Postcards From Holidays In My Head". I redefined all the linear
elements and finished the painting in.
|
26/06/2002
Started work on a series
of 4 canvases - 18x24 acrylic primed linen canvas. I am working from
farther way and trying to stand up to paint where possible. I am
using larger brushes when practical.
I have done the intial drawing in
of two works: "Chequered Sun" and "Classical Composition" - I started painting
in the former.
