Summer 2009

My Art Diary

01/07/2009

I completed the main paint layer on AVEBURY: APOTHEOSIS OF A STONE CIRCLE - although I may paint over part of the left hand side.

02/07/2009

Out in the morning; I started to paint SIMPLE SIMON PICTURE: GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS when I got back. This painting harks back to the repeated circle works of 1977/79.

03/07/2009

I cannot understand why there are so many domestic things to do this year!  I started to repaint the lines on AVEBURY: APOTHEOSIS OF A STONE CIRCLE, fair bit more to do however.

04/07/2009

Saturday and I completed repainting the lines on AVEBURY: APOTHEOSIS OF A STONE CIRCLE - didn't do anything else though.

06/07/2009

I decided carry on the gardening tasks I started on Sunday.  In consequence I only did a relatively small amount of work in my studio.  I started to repaint the lines on THE WESSEX MAN CONCEPT - SELF PORTRAIT ON A BRIDGE.

07/07/2009

I carried on repainting lines on THE WESSEX MAN CONCEPT - SELF PORTRAIT ON A BRIDGE.  I had to go out half a dozen times which was a tad disruptive!

08/07/2009

I finished enhancing the lines (plus some other detailing) on THE WESSEX MAN CONCEPT - SELF PORTRAIT ON A BRIDGE.  I only had to go out five times!

09/07/2009

Worked again (in between nursing sick animals) on SIMPLE SIMON: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS.  The rest of this year will have to be more productive.

10/07/2009

I finished SIMPLE SIMON: THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS, filling in circles and adding gestural symbols.  I plan to spend tomorrow working on web sites etc. on the computer.

13/07/2009

I started work (if you can call it that - drawing small circles round pegboard holes!) on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART.

14/07/2009

I carried on with SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART but I had a late start and progress was a little slow (plus there are an awful lot of holes!).

15/07/2009

I completed all the circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART - which took all of an admittedly disrupted day.

16/07/2009

Hardly any time to paint at all (these days get worse!) But made a start painting the strands on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART.

17/07/2009

Completed the strands and started painting in the circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART. Although the day included more trips to the vets and me finishing painting earlier than planned.

18/07/2009

Most of the day was spent filling in circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART.

I am very behind with writing and other paperwork.

19/07/2009

Still filling in circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART.  This took a large part of a laid back type of day (Sunday).

Still behind with writing and paperwork!

20/07/2009

I completed painting the circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART - hooray!  Nothing else done.

21/07/2009

I finished SIMPLE SIMON: THE FIRST MANIFESTATION OF TELEPHONE ART by adding detailing and numerals etc.  I better now get back to some more serious work!

22/07/2009

I spent most of the day repainting or retouching works that had got damaged in storage.  Nothing else was done except a few sketch book drawings.

23/07/2009

I continued partially repainting and/or retouching various old works during a fairly truncated day.

24/07/2009

I repainted parts of PORTRAIT FROM THE BACK which had got damaged while in the possession of a gallery.  Nothing else was done because of other commitments.

25/07/2009

I completed an A6 book of pencil drawings, all predominantly concerned with the human figure incorporated into a landscape.

I then added symbols (in oil) to MAN & THE VOID and started doing likewise to FIGURE WAITING AT A DOOR.

26/07/2009

I completed adding symbols to FIGURE WAITING AT A DOOR thus finishing the work.

I then added symbols to MAN LEAVING A LANDSCAPE (these will need additional painting) and started adding them to SELF PORTRAIT IN A BOX.

27/07/2009

After a bit of gardening I spent most of the day working on my web site.  I didn't do much art work in my studio.

28/07/2009

I finished adding the symbols to SELF PORTRAIT IN A BOX.  I also did some detailing and general fiddling about.

I then filled in the symbols on MAN LEAVING A LANDSCAPE, completing the work.

After this I began to add the initial pencil lines etc. to an experimental new work entitled THE ACROBAT.  This work harks back to the combined text/image works of the Seventies.

29/07/2009

I started work on THE ACROBAT in earnest.  I went over yesterday's pencil lines with acrylic paint and then added further detailing within the sequential blocks.  I am out all day tomorrow.

31/07/2009

I added more imagery to THE ACROBAT in the morning - had to go out in the afternoon.

01/08/2009

Most of my time in my studio was spent uploading photos of my work to my Windows Live site.  I have close to 800 works represented.

03/08/2009

I filled in the imagery with colour, added more text phrases and other detailing to THE ACROBAT.  I finished the work too late in the day to start anything else, although I did do some pencil drawings.

04/08/2009

I returned to work on the GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE series of small painting, I redefined the lines (in oils) of the first work in series and almost finished this stage of another.

05/08/2009

I continued with my line repainting although the day was full of family distractions.  I also did some pencil sketches.

06/08/2009

I was out most of the day but when in my studio I carried on repainting the lines on the GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE pictures.

07/08/2009

I worked again on the GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE series in between work on the computers.  I finished redefining the lines of two more works.

I also started painting in circles for another "Simple Simon" repeated circle work entitled SELF PORTRAIT WITH A MARGIN.

08/08/2009

I reinforced the lines of the remaining three GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE while listening to cricket commentary on the radio (although I wish I hadn't done the latter!).  I also added the titles.

The works have the following names: GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - BABY HEARS SOME NEWS, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - ANGEL MAKES A DISCOVERY, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - MARY MAKES A DECISION, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - JOSEPH KNOWS IT ALL, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - THE SHEPHERD FINDS A SECRET, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - BABY SAYS HIS PIECE, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - MARY HAS A BALL, GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - ANGEL CAUSES A STIR.

09/08/2009

I have got toothache and I meant to spend the day painting as I didn't feel like gardening.  However, most of the time was spent on the computer amending my web sites.

10/08/2009

I discovered I have a tooth abscess so a large part of the day was spent waiting outside a dentist's surgery (lots of pencil drawings in small sketch book!).  I did a little more work on SIMPLE SIMON - SELF PORTRAIT WITH A MARGIN but mostly wrote sundry things on the computers.

Now on antibiotics and no alcohol for five days!

11/08/2009

I spent much of the day painting paynes grey acrylic circles on SIMPLE SIMON - SELF PORTRAIT WITH A MARGIN (bit of gardening in the morning - I can't get into gardening at the moment).

12/08/2009

I completed the painting of almost endless circles on SIMPLE SIMON - SELF PORTRAIT WITH A MARGIN.  Nothing much else was done.

13/08/2009

Not a lot of work done - I was out visiting.  I did the charcoal drawing stage of three works SIMPLE SIMON: DOVES ON A ROOF TOP, SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS and SIMPLE SIMON: ELECTROMAGNETIC MEMORIES REFORM IN DEEP SPACE.  All three works will be in acrylic on acrylic medium primed pegboard.I

14/08/2009

I went over the charcoal lines of SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS and SIMPLE SIMON: ELECTROMAGNETIC MEMORIES REFORM IN DEEP SPACE in acrylic medium - this took far longer than it should have done.

15/08/2009

I spent a large part of the day catching up on paperwork (and the remainder doing inconsequential things!).  No painting!

17/08/2009

I worked most of the day on SIMPLE SIMON: DOVES ON A ROOF TOP: painting small circles around the pegboard holes, using acrylic paint.

I am out with the family tomorrow - so any work done will be in my head!

19/08/2009

I finished the small circle painting on SIMPLE SIMON: DOVES ON A ROOF TOP (while writing a new play in my head).

I then started adding more circles to SIMPLE SIMON: ELECTROMAGNETIC MEMORIES REFORM IN DEEP SPACE.

20/08/2009

I completed painting circles on SIMPLE SIMON: ELECTROMAGNETIC MEMORIES REFORM IN DEEP SPACE.

I then started the far larger task of painting them on SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS.

21/08/2009

Out and about but also carried on with the task of painting circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS.

22/08/2009

I did a little more circle painting on SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS (in between gardening and countless domestic things).

23/08/2009

Sunday: I continued with the circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS.  However, not a great deal was actually done.

24/08/2009

I managed to finish the circles on SIMPLE SIMON: THE DEATH OF BILLY THE KID RE-ENACTED INSIDE THE MIND OF A MAN WAITING FOR A NUMBER 38 BUS.  I then did a little more work on this painting and others in the series.

25/08/2009

Back on marginally more serious work: I drew and then painted in the symbols on GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - BABY HEARS SOME NEWS.  Then the day petered out with writing and a lot of paper work - life is hard!

26/08/2009

I added symbols to GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - ANGEL CAUSES A STIR.  Once I had started this work I made a tentative start on another.

27/08/2009

I completed GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - ANGEL MAKES A DISCOVERY - drawing symbols and then painting them in.  Because of a late start I did not have time to do any more.

28/08/2009

I carried on working on members of the "Group Portrait In A Landscape" series.  I drew and painted symbols on GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - JOSEPH KNOWS IT ALL, completing the work.

29/08/2009

I spent most of the day working on web sites, paper work etc. - somewhat chilled out but I did do some drawing.

31/08/2009

I added symbols to GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - MARY MAKES A DECISION - the fifth in the series.  After completing the work I had to go out.

01/09/2009

I finished GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - THE SHEPHERD FINDS A SECRET by adding symbols and then filling them in with paint.  This is the sixth work; the day when I will have to return to the two very large "Meditative Field Paintings" draws closer.

02/09/2009

I completed the penultimate group portrait (as before by painting in symbols which innately evolve but correspond, at least initially, to the theme).  This work is entitled GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - MARY HAS A BALL.  A day out with the family tomorrow.

04/09/2009

I drew and filled in the symbols of the last in this series of works: GROUP PORTRAIT IN A LANDSCAPE - BABY SAYS HIS PIECE.  I will probably spend tomorrow writing and next week I want to get more DIY and garden jobs completed.  This year has been considerably more domestically orientated than previous ones!

09/09/2009

I've been poorly this week (don't know why) and I couldn't get out in the garden at all today so spent some time in my studio completing a work I started some time ago: namely SEVERAL (SIX, FOUR, TWO) FIGURES IN A DARKENED ROOM - THE INVENTION OF STOCHASTIC FURNITURE (MARIE ANTOINETTE VERSION).  I pencilled arrangements of rudimentary figures and then painted over them.  Out and then working on the computer tomorrow.

13/09/2009

Last week, which I planned to devote to garden and DIY, didn't follow expectations as I spent most of the time on the computers sorting my photos of my work into sets (divided by year or type).  Somehow I have lost scores of images so I will have to redo them at some point (the quality of many others is poor and there are hundreds more which I never got round to taking - a lot of photography to schedule in!).

14/09/2009

I started another Peter panic-ish improvisation, initially in pencil which I will go over with paint.  I am calling the work IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.  Peter Panic (or Petronella Pan) encompasses my figurative developmental pictures, as distinct from the more abstract symbol based pieces.

16/09/2009

I continued to add pencil images to IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE, each ones based on the preceding image.  I didn't do as much as I hoped and I am out all day tomorrow.

18/09/2009

Progress is frustratingly slow on IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.

19/09/2009

There is little time to work this weekend.  I carried on adding pencil images to IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.

20/09/2009

I didn't go out into the garden as planned (despite the fact that the weeds are practically six feet tall) so managed to finish the pencil drawing stage of IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.

21/09/2009

I started a new developmental improvisation entitled IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL.  Like the previous work I am pencilling in the images first.

22/09/2009

I did further work on IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL.  I should finish the drawing stage tomorrow (hopefully I will have more energy!).

23/09/2009

I finished the drawing stage of IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL; this work is far more chaotic and disorganised than the preceding Improvisation.

24/09/2009

I started to paint over the pencil lines of IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL with acrylic jar colour.  This is a frustrating task as the brush wont let me be as precise as I would wish (or I wont allow the brush!).

25/09/2009

An hour of painting and then unfortunately I had to go to a funeral; I was out the remainder of the day.

26/09/2009

I carried on the process of painting the pencil lines on IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL (after a late, weekend style, start).

28/09/2009

I completed IMPROVISATION SIX - CROWNED HILL; by painting over the remainder of the pencil lines, adding some detailing and filling in.

29/09/2009

Out with June, although I did bits and pieces in my studio when I got back home.  The "bits and pieces" included quite a lot of writing, which is a direction I would like to concentrate more on.

30/09/2009

I began the slow (at the moment!) process of painting over the pencil lines on the other improvisation: IMPROVISATION FIVE - SNIFFING SUBMARINE.  Lots of other ideas in my head but no boards or canvases to paint on.
