Spring 2009

My Art Diary

01/04/2009

I painted the second version of NUDE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE - like the first work small images will need to be added.

I then painted the four amended landscapes: GIRL BEFORE THE MIRROR, GIRL COMBING HER HAIR, GIRL PLAYING BALL and SEATED GIRL - imagery to be added.

02/04/2009

Late in my studio.  I added facial feature variations (in thinned oil paint) to both versions of TWO CHILDREN - these will need filling in in due course.

03/04/2009

I painted the facial feature variations on both versions of TWO CHILDREN -  PORTRAIT EMBELLISHMENT.  No other detailing was needed.

I then added abstracted variations to both paintings called SEATED NUDE, finishing the works.

I am probably doing domestic things over the weekend although I may find time to do some pencil drawings.

06/04/2009

I added symbols to SEATED GIRL and GIRL PLAYING BALL, completing both works.  The evolving symbols were loosely based on body parts and actions.

I then made a bit of a start on GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR and GIRL COMBING HER HAIR.

07/04/2009

I finished adding symbols to GIRL BEFORE A MIRROR and GIRL COMBING HER HAIR.  I used a similar symbol type to the two preceding works in the series.

08/04/2009

I adding symbols to the figure in NUDE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE; no other work was needed.

09/04/2009

I completed the second NUDE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE by adding faint symbols.  Nothing else except a few sketch book drawings.

10/04/2009

Half a holiday and all I did in my studio was start the drawing stage, using very thin paint, of an experimental work called SELF PORTRAIT IN A BOX.

11/04/2009

I completed the initial drawing phase of SELF PORTRAIT IN A BOX (using pink and ochre paint).

I then did the drawing stage of MAN LEAVING A LANDSCAPE and (provisionally) FIGURE WAITING AT A DOOR.

After this I started the drawing stage of a very small picture entitled PORTRAIT IN A WOOD.

After this I went out.

12/04/2009

I completed the drawing stage of PORTRAIT IN A WOOD.  I will probably finish the work on Tuesday as it is a Bank Holiday on Monday and I will probably go out.  I plan to dedicate some days this week to gardening so it may not prove that productive.

14/04/2009

I painted PORTRAIT IN A WOOD early and spent the rest of the day in the garden.

15/04/2009

Spent all day photographing paintings.  I am hoping to get as many as possible on the web.

16/04/2009

Out most of the day.  When I finally got in I primed a panel, photographed paintings (again) and wrote things like this.

17/04/2009

I spent all my free time photographing paintings.  This can be a very tedious enterprise!

18/04/2009

I finished photographing all the paintings in my studio and storeroom.  There is still a great many to do at other sites (mostly earlier works) over the course of the year.  Many of the paintings I have sold were not photographed.

20/04/2009

In the garden all day yesterday.  Today I put together a sideboard!; nothing more creative was done.

21/04/2009

I started painting the large "Meditative Field Painting" entitled HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM. The drawing stage had previously been completed.

22/04/2009

I carried on painting HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.  Progress was slow. Partly because it is a large painting and partly because I had a lot of distractions.  I am using water soluble oil paint - some of which had gone slightly hard in the tube (I haven't used this paint much for years).

23/04/2009

I was out in the morning (visiting my father), came home, had three hours in my studio and then had to take the dog to the vet!  I continued painting HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

24/04/2009

I had to go out in the late morning so only had a little time to paint before this.  I carried on painting HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

25/04/2009

I had a few hours in my studio and continued working on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.  I spent the rest of the day in the garden.

27/04/2009

I didn't have a great deal of time to work (my fault, no one else's!) but carried on with the painting of HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

28/04/2009

A repeat of yesterday: not much time (my fault again!), more work on  HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

29/04/2009

I am still working on the main painting stage of HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.  This is a very large work!

30/04/2009

I completed the main painting stage of HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM - despite being out all morning.

01/05/2009

I did some preliminary work on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE in readiness for painting.  No actual painting was done as I had to go out.  I will probably be gardening tomorrow.

04/05/2009

I meant to do half an hour of gardening and spend the rest of the day painting - unfortunately it was the other way round!  I started painting one of the "Octopus Head Landscapes".

05/05/2009

I put up a bed in the morning!  In the afternoon I finished the main painting stage of the first "Octopus Head Landscape" and started another.

06/05/2009

I finished the main stage of the second "Octopus Head Landscape" - now with the generic working title of FAMILY SCENE (or FAMILY GROUP).  I then started a third.

07/05/2009

I finished the main colour stage of the third FAMILY SCENE.  I then did likewise to a fourth and almost a fifth.

08/05/2009

I finished the main stage of the fifth FAMILY SCENE/FAMILY GROUP and then completed this stage of a sixth.

09/05/2009

I worked on the last two FAMILY GROUP pictures and then went to a family birthday party - so very little done.

11/05/2009

I finished the main stage of FAMILY GROUP seven and eight - in between doing a million other things.

12/05/2009

I went back to photographing paintings again (I will probably spend most of the rest of the week editing these photos).

Just before going out with my wife I started the drawing stage of two small landscapes (unusually using paint).  Both works have the title SEMICONDUCTORS IN A LANDSCAPE.

13/05/2009

No painting (although I did plan to do a bit) but all day editing photos of art works.

14/05/2009

Another day editing art work photos.

15/05/2009

Sadly I had to go to a funeral.  Once home again, the rest of the day was occupied editing photos.

16/05/2009

Finished editing this major batch of photos (not all of which were very good - although I have no plans to re-photograph the pictures in the short term).  I now have to photo all my works in store at various locations.  I will allow the rest of the year to do this - when it is practical to do so.

I am having a week off from art next week to try and get the garden up together.

26/05/2009

Back in my studio, although feeling pretty lethargic after an exceptionally hectic and stressful Bank Holiday weekend.  I completed the main painting stage of both versions of SEMICONDUCTORS IN A LANDSCAPE.

27/05/2009

I spent all day catching up with my writing on the computers.  I can't believe it took that long.

28/05/2009

I started painting THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE and then decided to partially repaint its pendant: HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

29/05/2009

So many things to do I couldn't get much painting done.  I did more work on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.

30/05/2009

I had to re-photo some paintings specifically for a gallery.  The I did paperwork - no painting (and not much gardening either!).

02/06/2009

I had a rare weekday in the garden yesterday.  Today I carried on painting THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE - phew this is a large work!

03/06/2009

Most of my free time was spent working on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.

04/06/2009

I didn't get into my studio very early.  Once ensconced I carried on painting THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.

05/06/2009

I completed the main stage of THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE - which took much of the day, punctuated by gardening and multifarious domestic tasks.

06/06/2009

No Painting!  Hanging wallpaper and then writing obscure prose.

07/06/2009

Writing more obscure prose - no painting, no gardening.

09/06/2009

No work yesterday because of domestic emergencies.  I started repainting the lines on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE during what little time I had today - probably no work tomorrow either (same reasons as above).

10/06/2009

I only managed a little more work on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE - family issues.

11/06/2009

I got into my studio at about 1pm and spent the rest of the afternoon continuing with the repainting of the lines on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.  I should finish this tomorrow and then I have to add symbols and similar detailing.

12/06/2009

Finished the lines on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.  I then started doing likewise on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

15/06/2009

No art work over the weekend.  Today, I carried on repainting the lines on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM during the morning/early afternoon.  Out with June in the later afternoon.

17/06/2009

I decided to have a day in the garden yesterday (in line with the more laid back attitude I am trying to adopt this year).  I carried on with HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM today and should finish repainting the lines tomorrow.

18/06/2009

As expected I completed redefining the lines on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM.

19/06/2009

All I did today was some small drawings - I hope to be in the garden over the weekend.

22/06/2009

I painted in MAN AND THE VOID, SELF PORTRAIT IN A BOX, MAN LEAVING A LANDSCAPE and FIGURE WAITING AT A DOOR - symbols need to be added.

23/06/2009

I added symbols to both versions of SEMICONDUCTORS IN A LANDSCAPE - completing both works.

24/06/2009

I started work (after a long break) on SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY.  I am adding the main paint stage using very subdued colours.

25/06/2009

I  returned to ALL STONE CIRCLES RESIDE INSIDE A SINGLE CELL, adding more drawn images.

I also did more painting of SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY.

26/06/2009

During the morning I did some more drawing (charcoal followed by acrylic medium) on ALL STONE CIRCLES RESIDE INSIDE A SINGLE CELL.

During the afternoon I carried on with the main painting stage of SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY.  I am using mainly oxide of chromium and blue black so the result is a rather dirty looking painting.

27/06/2009

I finished the main stage of SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY (which I am now calling SELF PORTRAIT ON A BRIDGE) - it didn't take long, then I went out.

29/06/2009

Like what seems to happen quite often this year I spent the morning doing multifarious domestic tasks leaving only the afternoon to paint (it was also a particularly hot afternoon!).

I started to paint in ALL STONE CIRCLES RESIDE INSIDE A SINGLE CELL (which I am now calling THE EVOLUTION OF A STONE CIRCLE).

30/06/2009

A bit of a late start but not as bad as yesterday.  I carried on painting THE EVOLUTION OF A STONE CIRCLE (now called AVEBURY: APOTHEOSIS OF A STONE CIRCLE - its pendant is now called THE WESSEX MAN CONCEPT - SELF PORTRAIT ON A BRIDGE).
