My Art Diary
| 02/01/2009
No time to work yesterday. Today, as an interim measure I did the drawing (pencil and then acrylic) and main painting stage of a small work on cardboard entitled PORTRAIT WITH A COLD. The artist has also got a cold and progress was accordingly slow! |
| 05/01/2009
No work over the weekend, although I cannot remember all I did do!. Today I finished PORTRAIT WITH A COLD by adding figurative images and symbols and painting them in. I also added symbols and shapes to FIGURE IN ENVIRONMENT ONE (name and sex change!) and started to add them to FIGURE IN ENVIRONMENT TWO (again name/sex change). I then wasted most of the evening messing around on the computer. |
| 06/01/2009
An old fashioned day in my studio with quite a lot getting done. I finished adding the shapes/symbols to FIGURE IN ENVIRONMENT TWO. I then added symbols/shapes to MAN WITH BLUE SOCKS and started to do likewise to MAN WITH RED TIE. I did some useful work (for once) on the computer in the evening. |
| 07/01/2009
I added further symbols to MAN WEARING A RED TIE (another name change), thus completing this stage. I then added symbols and shapes to STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY ONE. |
| 08/01/2009
I painted in the symbols of FIGURE IN ENVIRONMENT ONE and FIGURE IN ENVIRONMENT TWO, this with other detailing finished these works. |
| 09/01/2009
I painted in the symbols on MAN WEARING A BLUE SOCKS and MAN WEARING A RED TIE, completing both pictures. |
| 10/01/2009
I repainted much of the imagery of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY ONE and then decided the work was finished. I was actually supposed to be doing D.I.Y.! |
| 12/01/2009
I started the day by adding some elements to STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY ONE (I extended the background structure and appended symbols. I then added fantasy figurative images to PORTRAIT OF TOBY - THE PETRONELLA PANIC REMIX. I used pencil and will go over this with acrylic on Wednesday (I promised to devote tomorrow to painting and decorating!). At the end of the afternoon I did the charcoal drawing stage of two more sculpture study portraits entitled STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO & STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY THREE. |
| 13/01/2009
Most of the day was spent scraping old wallpaper off walls. However I did find time to go over the charcoal lines on STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO & STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY THREE with acrylic medium and paint. I then did the drawing of two other versions of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE (TOBY FOUR & FIVE) in charcoal and then acrylic medium/paint. |
| 14/01/2009
I went over the pencil lines on PORTRAIT OF TOBY - THE PETRONELLA PANIC REMIX. I then partially painted in some of the images. I will go over this work with Liquitex acrylic medium/varnish (although I plan to get a removable varnish for future acrylic works). |
| 15/01/2009
I only worked in the afternoon. I painted the main colour layer of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO & STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY THREE. Then the light went. |
| 16/01/2009
I started the day by tweaking some of the lines on STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO. I then did the main painting stage of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY FOUR & STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY FIVE. I ended the day partially repainting LANDSCAPE APHORISM: ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN. |
| 17/01/2009
I put a thin layer of acrylic medium on PORTRAIT OF TOBY - THE PETRONELLA PANIC REMIX, had a quick look again at LANDSCAPE APHORISM: ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN then busied myself around the house. Gardening tomorrow. |
| 19/01/2009
I added symbols to STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY FOUR & STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY FIVE. One set was pre thought out and the other a spontaneous series of simple characterisations. I filled in the images where it was appropriate to do so. Both of these works are in acrylic paint (and our now probably finished). I then added symbols to STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO (using oil paint). These were spontaneous expressions. I probably need to touch them up with paint tomorrow. |
| 20/01/2009
I only slightly touched up (i.e. added a minimum of shading) the symbols of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY TWO. I also added some detailing to STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY FOUR. I then added (and filled in) symbols on STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE - TOBY THREE. I added other detailing and finished this work too. |
| 21/01/2009
I started two works (of an eight work series) using the portrait representation shape (code named octopus head!) I invented for the Toby Patterson series in a group (genre) situation. I did the initial drawing in a combination of pencil and charcoal. I then went over the charcoal lines with acrylic medium. The pictures only have vague titles at the moment. In the afternoon I began to paint BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL using acrylics. I will try and get most of this done next week. |
| 22/01/2009
Late start. I did the drawing stage of two more of the genre pictures. |
| 23/01/2009
Most of the day in my studio - trying to work with one of the cats permanently on my lap! I did the drawing stage (pencil and charcoal with the charcoal painted over with acrylic medium) of the last four "octopus" head genre paintings. |
| 24/01/2009
Stripping wallpaper most of the day! (a lot more to do!!). However I did start the drawing stage of two new canvas boards. Both have the title TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE. They use a "Meditative Field Painting" format with found characterisation shapes embedded. More wall paper stripping tomorrow!!! |
| 26/01/2009
I completed the pencil drawing stage of both versions of TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE. This took all day - I don't know why (I've said this before). |
| 27/01/2009
I spent a large part of the day painting BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL - interspersed with gardening, dog walking (wife walking) and sundry other domestic activities. |
| 28/01/2009
I spent all of my free time working on BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. |
| 29/01/2009
A bad day! I hardly did any thing constructive, although my time was filled with various activities. I did finish painting the main stage of BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. |
| 30/01/2009
I did a lot of tweaking to the first painting stage of BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. This took a large part of the day. Later I started the charcoal drawing stage of a new circular landscape – as yet untitled. |
| 31/01/2009
I did a little more drawing for the circular landscape – not much as I spent most of the day making furniture. |
| 02/02/2009
I went over some of the lines on BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL with different colours of acrylic paint. I then finished the drawing stage of the new circular landscape (provisionally called THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM). |
| 03/02/2009
I added some symbols to foreground blocks in BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. I then went over the charcoal lines of THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM with acrylic medium and later added a thin wash of raw sienna. |
| 04/02/2009
I spent the day painting THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM. |
| 05/02/2009
I finished the main painting stage of THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM, then I went out. |
| 06/02/2009
I spent intermittent parts of the day painting ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY JIMI HENDRIX) which I decided to return to (for no particular reason). The rest of the time I was designing a secret cupboard. |
| 07/02/2009
I photographed some paintings (I've got hundreds to do) but nothing much else art related. |
| 09/02/2009
I moved all my art books back into my studio from the library. In terms of actual painting: I carried on painting ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY JIMI HENDRIX), but I didn't do as much as I planned. |
| 10/02/2009
I had lots of disparate things to do today. However I had some time in my studio and carried on painting ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY JIMI HENDRIX). |
| 11/02/2009
I completed the main painting stage of ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY JIMI HENDRIX). The rest of the day was spent photographing paintings - something I should do more of (I have hundreds to photograph).I |
| 12/02/2009
Was out all morning; when I got back in my studio I started an experimental work on wood panel effect MDF. I did both the pencil and paint stage of the initial drawing. The picture has the working title of MOTHER AND CHILD. |
| 13/02/2009
Not too much time to paint. I started another "Peter Panic" IMPROVISATION. Like the previous works in the serious the figurative images are done, at least at first, in pencil - I am not sure if I will put medium/varnish straight on the pencil or repaint the lines. |
| 16/02/2009
I did more of the pencil drawing of IMPROVISATION. However, as there was a cricket test match on the radio I decided to do something less intense in the afternoon. I painted over the pencil lines of one of the TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE with mars black oil paint. |
| 17/02/2009
I worked again on IMPROVISATION. I notice the pencil is smudging so I will have to go over the lines with paint. In the afternoon I went over the pencil lines of the second TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE with oil paint. |
| 18/02/2009
I spent the first part of the morning writing this and the Diary of Peter Panic as I had got a long way behind. Later I did more work on IMPROVISATION (I haven't worked out the rest of the title yet). I then added the main layer of paint to MOTHER AND CHILD. |
| 19/02/2009
I finished the pencil drawing stage of IMPROVISATION. I then painted over the pencil lines of six of the FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE "octopus head" pictures. |
| 20/02/2009
I painted over the pencil lines of the remaining two FIGURES IN AN ENVIRONMENT?. I then went over all eight works with a thin wash of raw sienna acrylic paint. Unfortunately the day went down hill after that - although I did do a lot of non artistic jobs. |
| 21/02/2009
I worked all morning on the provisional Ionist Art Web Shop (no e-commerce at this stage) which I have just set up. I did some varnishing but nothing much else of a creative nature. |
| 23/02/2009
A bad day, spent partly in ferrying animals to and from the vets. I started painting both versions of TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE. |
| 24/02/2009
I completed the main painting stage of the first TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE (save the margin). More animals at the vets! |
| 25/02/2009
I started the second TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE (after painting the perimeter of the previous version), reaching about half way. |
| 26/02/2009
I finished the main stage of the second TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE. The lines will need cleaning up and perhaps some other detailing - ditto the first version. |
| 27/02/2009
I redefined the lines and added a modicum of detailing to both versions of TWO FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE, completing both works - although I originally planned to add another set of symbols to the second work. |
| 28/02/2009
All I did today was pack up and wash paintbrushes etc. in readiness for next week. I am having a week off from art work to redecorate the house!!! |
| 09/03/2009
I got back into my studio eventually but had to catch up with my paperwork and writing so didn't start painting. |
| 10/03/2009
Still late getting into my studio but started work again on IMPROVISATION, painting over the pencil lines. |
| 11/03/2009
I completed painting over the lines on IMPROVISATION FOUR - TWO MEN IN A BUSH. After finishing this work I didn't have time to do anything else. |
| 12/03/2009
I started work again on MOTHER AND CHILD (an oil painting on unprimed routed MDF), adding simple diagrammatic symbols and other detailing, completing the work. Probably no more art until early next week as I promised to do more decorating! |
| 16/03/2009
I decided to partially repaint LANDSCAPE APHORISM - ALL TREES POINT TO HEAVEN; adding shapes in a procession going into the painting. |
| 17/03/2009
Not much time to work. I started to add detailing to THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM. At the end of the afternoon I began to repaint some of the lines, a task which will have to be completed tomorrow. |
| 18/03/2009
Not much time to paint again (my fault as I decided to do some work in the garden and miscellaneous other domestic tasks. I completed all the repainting of lines on THE FALL OF ICARUS IN KIT FORM. I doubt if I will have to return to this picture. |
| 19/03/2009
Out most of the day today although I did find time to photograph some more paintings. As I may have mentioned I want to photograph or copy as many works as possible this year. |
| 20/03/2009
A thousand things to do today so only in my studio for a brief spell. I did the initial drawing stage for a work entitled WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE. The landscape has already been painted. |
| 21/03/2009
I did the charcoal drawing stage of a second WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE and then went over both versions with thinned water soluble oil paint. After this I did the pencil drawing stage of four smaller NUDE IN A LANDSCAPE and then went over these lines with oil as well. |
