Autumn
2008
| 01/10/2008
I completed the painting over of
pencil lines on IMPROVISATION THREE. A feat that took most of the
day. |
| 02/10/2008
I am still in the middle of a disrupted
work regime and didn't get into my studio until midday. I then made
a start on a large deep edge canvas entitled BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING
CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. I added all the main lines with
thin charcoal. I am out most of tomorrow. |
| 04/10/2008
I didn't do any work yesterday but
managed a few hours today. I did the main charcoal drawing stage
for a new large picture entitled ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY
JIMI HENDRIX). |
| 06/10/2008
An on and off day - entirely my
fault as I kept leaving my studio to do other things. I started painting
in the images of IMPROVISATION ONE with white paint. |
| 07/10/2008
I did more work on IMPROVISATION
ONE (with usual interruptions) until I had to go out in the late afternoon. |
| 08/10/2008
I completed painting in the images
of IMPROVISATION ONE. I am out all day tomorrow; hopefully I will
start painting the lines on Friday. |
| 10/10/2008
As planned I started to paint the
pencil lines of IMPROVISATION ONE but did less than a third.
I did however finish a book of fifty
pencil drawings. The majority of which represent a merging of figure
and landscape.
I am cleaning my studio tomorrow
for the second time this year!!! |
| 13/10/2008
I carried on painting over the pencil
lines of IMPROVISATION ONE (in my new clean studio). It will still
take a day or two to complete. |
| 14/10/2008
I finally completed painting the
pencil lines of IMPROVISATION ONE - EXCLAMATION MARK, APOTHEOSIS OF. |
| 15/10/2008
I painted the perimeters of IMPROVISATION
TWO - INTRODUCING SCHISM MAN and IMPROVISATION THREE - MAN UNDER A CLOUD.
All three works are now finished. I then spent a large part of the
afternoon catching one of two wild guinea pigs which had started coming
into the garden! |
| 16/10/2008
Limited time for painting as I was
out all morning and spent part of the afternoon catching the remaining
guinea pig. I went over the charcoal lines with acrylic paint on
ADORATION OF THE SHEPHERD (HEY BABY BY JIMI HENDRIX). |
| 17/10/2008
I went over the charcoal lines with
acrylic medium on BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT
AS A WINDMILL - after working on the guinea pig hutch all morning!
I am hoping this is the end of the small rodent adventures for the week. |
| 20/10/2008
A desperately disrupted day.
I started the charcoal drawing stage of a new very large scale "Meditative
Field Painting" entitled THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.
The rest of the time I was experimenting
with scanners, cameras and software in an attempt to work out the best
way of copying my artwork. |
| 21/10/2008
I fiddled around all morning but
more or less finished the drawing stage of THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS
THE ANTELOPE. |
| 22/10/2008
Not sure how productive I'm going
to be this week. I started the charcoal drawing stage of another "Field"
painting with the working title of HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL,
I AM. |
| 23/10/2008
I more or less finished the first
stage of HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL, I AM. I'm not
really happy with either of these works. |
| 24/10/2008
I decided to add a great deal more
detailing at the charcoal drawing stage on HIEROPHANTASY:I AM IMMORTAL
IF I BELIEVE I AM. This took all day and may still not be finished.
Wildlife conservation tomorrow. |
| 26/10/2008
I spent all day scanning photos
and experimenting with photograph settings etc.. It poured with rain
outside. |
| 28/10/2008
All of yesterday and much of today
was given up to gardening and jobs about the house. I did do the
pencil stage of a new small "meditative Landscape" - one of four. |
| 29/10/2008
I did the preliminary drawing of
a second Meditative Landscape/Field Painting and then started a third.
I did very little else. |
| 30/10/2008
I finished the drawing stage of
the third small Field painting and also completed the fourth.
I did some compositional thumbnail
sketches for a work entitled GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE while standing in a queue
at the Post Office. |
| 31/10/2008
I did the pencil drawing stage for
two small portraits; both entitled GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE. I then covered
them with a thin wash of raw sienna oil paint.
I also went over the pencil lines
of one of the "Field" paintings with acrylic paint. I would like
to go over the other three tomorrow but I suspect I will have other things
to do! |
| 02/11/2008
I didn't have much time to work
but I went over the pencil lines with paint on a second small "Field" painting
and started a third. |
| 03/11/2008
In the morning I started painting
in both versions of GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE.
In the afternoon I completed going
over the pencil lines of the last two "Meditative Field Paintings" with
paynes grey acrylic jar colour.
And during the evening I did a number
of A6 pencil drawings on the theme of a figure incorporated into a landscape. |
| 04/11/2008
I finished the painting stage of
one version of GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE (including going over the pencil lines
with paint). I then started the second. |
| 05/11/2008
I was involved with other projects
much of the day - ditto tomorrow. When in my studio I carried on
painting the second GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE work but I never completed the
first stage. |
| 06/11/2008
I completed the main painting stage
of GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE but didn't get round to repainting the lines.
I was out a lot today although I
did more pencil drawings based on the merging of figure and landscape. |
| 07/11/2008
I repainted the lines of GEOFF IN
A LANDSCAPE TWO. Very little else. |
| 11/11/2008
I had a heavily tiring and long
DIY weekend (making a built in wardrobe etc.). I didn't do much today.
I sketched out the symbols for both versions of GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE and
marked out some MDF prior to cutting out for panels. This very thin
MDF which I was given to me but it may not be practical to use. I was also
given a lot of very thick MDF with a waxy covering which will have to be
removed if I decide to paint on it. |
| 12/11/2008
I added the character symbols to
the first version of GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE (as it turned out only loosely
based on the ones I had prepared - I now think it is better to invent the
images as you add them to the painting). I then added a set to the
second version, didn't like what I had done so removed them - then I went
out for the evening! |
| 13/11/2008
I redid the character symbols for
the second GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE, filled them in with paint and then didn't
like the effect. I altered the colours but I am still not happy with
this version although there is a certain logicality to the symbol progression.
I decided to do another version, went out to get some more canvas boards
but found the shop had sold out - typical!I |
| 14/11/2008
I started to paint all four of the
mini Meditative Field Paintings simultaneously, progressing to almost half
way on one work. |
| 17/11/2008
I completed the main painting stage
on two of the Meditative Field Paintings. |
| 18/11/2008
I completed one more of the small
landscape based "Field" paintings and did some work on the last.
I also modified the second GEOFF
IN A LANDSCAPE and will modify it further tomorrow. |
| 19/11/2008
Modified the second portrait entitled
GEOFF IN A LANDSCAPE, then framed both works. I also cut out the
MDF panels prior to priming.
I then worked again on the final
small Meditative Field Painting but still haven't finished it. |
| 20/11/2008
I was out most of the day in various
places, in between trips I finished the main painting stage of the fourth
mini Meditative Field Painting.
I did several hours of sketching
(more amalgamations of figure and landscape) while sitting in a hospital
waiting room. |
| 21/11/2008
I did a bit of detailing on the
four small "Field" paintings, now called: NB: GOD MEANT TO MAKE A FISH
MAN; LABORATORY EXPERIMENT: SPIRITS MEET, CONVERSE, THEN PART; BELLS ON
SUNDAY - RELIGION AS AN ACT OF DEFIANCE and MIRROR MAN SETS OUT AND SEES
HIMSELF COMING BACK.
I also put a first coat of acrylic
priming on 12 small MDF panels. |
| 22/11/2008
I put another coat of acrylic primer
on the small MDF panels then went out shopping with June. |
| 23/11/2008
I should have been out but couldn't
go. I did some preliminary work on the twelve new MDF panels.
I also cradled a circular panel which I had primed earlier. |
| 24/11/2008
I finished NB: GOD MEANT TO MAKE
A FISH MAN; LABORATORY EXPERIMENT: SPIRITS MEET, CONVERSE, THEN PART; BELLS
ON SUNDAY - RELIGION AS AN ACT OF DEFIANCE and MIRROR MAN SETS OUT AND
SEES HIMSELF COMING BACK. I added symbols and other detailing.
I also cut out six new MDF panels. |
| 25/11/2008
I did the initial drawing stage,
in pencil and then in paint of the four smallest MDF panels which I had
prepared last week. They are entitled MAN WITH BLUE SOCKS, MAN WITH
RED TIE, PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE ONE and PORTRAIT OF A MAN
IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE TWO.
I primed the panels cut yesterday. |
| 26/11/2008
I did the initial drawing, using
a combination of pencil and charcoal, of three of the six panels which
I primed this week. Two landscapes: LANDSCAPE WITH BULLET HOLES and
LANDSCAPE WITH CRACK and one portrait: TOBY: STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE.
I also did the tentative drawing
stage for a second portrait of Toby |
| 27/11/2008
I was out all of today. The
only work done was on the computer. |
| 28/11/2008
Identical day to yesterday! |
| 29/11/2008
I went over the charcoal lines of
TOBY: STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE and the pencil lines of the other "Toby" with
acrylic paint. The rest of the day was D.I.Y. or out. |
| 01/12/2008
I went over the pencil charcoal
lines of LANDSCAPE WITH BULLET HOLES and LANDSCAPE WITH CRACK with acrylic
paint. Then I went out again. |
| 02/12/2008
I started to paint over the charcoal
lines on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL I AM. This is
a large canvas (and I started work a bit late!) so there is more to do. |
| 03/12/2008
I completed painting over the lines
on HIEROPHANTASY: IF I BELIEVE I AM IMMORTAL I AM. I then started
doing likewise on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE; very little
of the latter was done however (it is a far more complex work). |
| 04/12/2008
After getting in just before noon
I started work again on THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE.
However almost half of the lines still need painting. |
| 05/12/2008
I finished repainting all the lines
of THE DAY THE LION WOKE UP AS THE ANTELOPE. Nothing much else was
done except the repeated scratching of my head and the consistent bemoaning
of the fact that a good many directions have not been followed.
I am doing lots of other things
over the weekend and wont get into my studio again until Tuesday (all being
well!). |
| 09/12/2008
I painted the first stage of STUDY
FOR A SCULPTURE: PORTRAIT OF TOBY - THE PETRONELLA PARIS REMIX using acrylics.
I then too quickly painted the background
stage of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE: PORTRAIT OF TOBY using oils. |
| 10/12/2008
I did a bit of detailing/repainting
to the background of STUDY FOR A SCULPTURE: PORTRAIT OF TOBY, plus redefining
all the lines.
I then started painting MAN WITH
BLUE SOCKS, MAN WITH RED TIE, PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE ONE
and PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE TWO. Not a lot of progress
and I'm going to be out all day tomorrow. |
| 12/12/2008
I completed (in poor light) the
main painting stage of MAN WITH BLUE SOCKS, MAN WITH RED TIE, PORTRAIT
OF A MAN IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE ONE and PORTRAIT OF A MAN IN ENVIRONMENT TYPE
TWO. Tomorrow is supposed to be very wet so I will probably have
to go out! |
| 15/12/2008
Started painting LANDSCAPE WITH
BULLET HOLES, too late in the day and in too bad a light. I got the
main colour down - I want to finish both of these small landscapes before
Christmas. |
| 16/12/2008
I finished the main stage of LANDSCAPE
WITH BULLET HOLES (only the perimeter margin remains to be done).
No work tomorrow - blame Christmas again! |
| 18/12/2008
I painted the edge of LANDSCAPE
WITH BULLET HOLES. The work will need detailing.
I then started painting LANDSCAPE
WITH CRACK (not too diligently!). |
| 19/12/2008
I completed the main painting stage
of LANDSCAPE WITH A CRACK. Both of the new landscapes will need tweaking
and the lines redefined. I am out the weekend however. |
| 22/12/2008
I partially repainted the lines
of LANDSCAPE WITH A CRACK, then had to go out. I will look again
at this work before declaring it finished. |
| 23/12/2008
Very near Christmas so lots of other
things happening. I partially repainted the lines of LANDSCAPE WITH
BULLET HOLES and then checked over this work and its companion, adding
extra colour etc.. |
| 24/12/2008
I decided to "underpose" elements
of a landscape onto ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT
using charcoal. The landscape was loosely based on the one in BACKGROUND
SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL as I now plan
to show the two works as a pair. This wasn't really a spur of the
moment decision as I had fleetingly thought about it before on a number
of occasions. |
| 27/12/2008
I returned to LANDSCAPE WITH A CRACK
and LANDSCAPE WITH BULLET HOLES and added a little more detailing - even
though I already considered the works finished. The rest of the time
I chilled out or went out. |
| 28/12/2008
After the morning in a very cold
garden I went over the new charcoal lines on ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS
- SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT with tube paint. |
| 29/12/2008
I added more linear elements to
ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT; initially with charcoal
and then paint. I am out tomorrow but I hope to return to this work
on Wednesday. |
| 31/12/2008
I started to paint in the designs
added to ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT. I
made very slow progress as I had a lot of domestic jobs to finish.
Not a very productive end to the year (during which I completed 62 art
works - much less than normal!). |
