Autumn
2007
| 01/10/2007
I filled in all the images in the
circular strand of INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE with thinned paint, finishing the
work late in the day.
I worked out then forgot my next
small work (Condensation). It would have been called BACKGROUND SCENERY
TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. |
| 02/10/2007
Almost a repeat of yesterday!
I filled in the images of INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED
LAST and finished the painting late in the afternoon.
I still could not remember anything
about BACKGROUND SCENERY TO A PAINTING CALLED SELF PORTRAIT AS A WINDMILL. |
| 03/10/2007
Cleaned my studio! The second
time this year!! Consequently no creative work done. |
| 04/10/2007
I had to finish off the studio clean
before I could start anything more productive. When the dust had
settled I painted the main coat on a third picture in the six work series
of "rough" Peter Panic paintings. I cannot remember if I ever had
titles for these works. |
| 05/10/2007
I was too chilled out today to be
as productive as I should have been - we were originally going out but
the trip had to be postponed so I was still in holiday mode. I painted
the main coat of a fourth work in the "Anti-Peter Panic" (he's called Pete
Panic!) series. |
| 08/10/2007
Terribly unproductive day!
I started painting in the main coat of a fifth "Pete Panic" work but didn't
finish this stage before having to go out again. |
| 09/10/2007
Not much better today! I completed
the first stage of the work started yesterday and then started the sixth.
I deliberately left some of this for tomorrow - there is cricket
on the radio!!
I went back to some of the other
works in the series and added some extra detailing. |
| 10/10/2007
I did more work on the sixth "Pete
Panic" painting, plus some tinkering to the other five. I have firmed
up the titles which are as follows: THE LITTLE MUSGRAVE RETOLD - A PETE
PANIC PAINTING, THE BALLAD OF MATTY GROVES - THE UNDERGROUND VERSION, A
DAY IN THE LIVES OF PETER PANIC, THE FIRST PROCLAMATION OF MY UNIVERSAL
THEOREM DERIVED FROM THE MOVEMENTS OF A FLY ON A WINDOW PANE, THE LOST
CODEX OF THE BUTTERFLY PEOPLE - 72 VARIATIONS ON SIMULTANEOUS BIRTH AND
DEATH and SEVERAL (SIX, FOUR, TWO) FIGURES IN A DARKENED ROOM - THE INVENTION
OF STOCHASTIC FURNITURE (MARIE ANTOINETTE VERSION). |
| 11/10/2007
I have continued my run of not very
productive days (Although I was stuck in a broken down bus for a large
part of the morning!). I completed the primary stage of the sixth
"Pete Panic" work - now entitled A DAY IN THE LIVES OF PETER PANIC.
I also started work on the preliminary
stage of a Meditative Landscape derivative, provisionally entitled THINKING
WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE, and two Quasi-Peter Panic works entitled FOUR CHAPTERS
FROM A BOOK I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN (THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A COMPUTER SCREEN)
and A SYMPHONIC PRESCRIPTION OF SIX TABLETS - BASED ON AN INSTALLATION
COMPRISING FIFTEEN MANNEQUINS WATCHING FIVE COLOURED BALLOONS SLOWLY DEFLATING
(FILMED BY A MAN IN A LOWLAND GORILLA SUIT). |
| 12/10/2007
I did the pencil drawing stage of
THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE. I will go over the lines with acrylic
paint.
I also did both the pencil and acrylic
stage of THE TRAIN SPOTTER - a blob head picture which will be filled with
organic train images.
I did a little more work to A DAY
IN THE LIVES OF PETER PANIC. But decided not to start adding images to
any works in this series until next week.
I did an even smaller amount of
work on the two Quasi-Peter Panic works. Probably not even worth
recording. |
| 15/10/2007
I went over the lines of THINKING
WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE using acrylic - I was late starting but this still
took far longer than anticipated. Very little else was done in consequence. |
| 16/10/2007
A dull miserable Tuesday and apart
from my time in town during the middle of the day I spent most of it in
my studio. I did the main painting stage of THE TRAIN SPOTTER - small
images to be added.
After this I put an acrylic wash
on THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE and more thinly on the canvas boards of
the two works I mention below.
I did the pencil stage of a small
portrait in a very economical style (probably called FEMALE OR MALE FIGURE).
I then did the drawing stage of a new "Project Isis" work entitled
AS I CLIMBED THE HILL THE DEAD CROW WENT TO HEAVEN.
I also did the pencil and acrylic
drawing stage of two very small portraits both entitled SELF PORTRAIT BY
PETER PANIC.
In between these I did a little
more work on the six "Pete Panic" pictures and the 1984 work GOD STUDIES
TWO - QUESTIONS AND ANSWER. The acrylic varnish (which I put on far
too thickly) has yellowed badly and I am trying to do something about parts
of this work. Many of my very complex early work have been spoilt
in a similar way. |
| 17/10/2007
Funny week this week! I did
the main painting stage of the two small SELF PORTRAIT OF PETER PANIC pictures.
I then did the main painting stage
of FEMALE OR MALE FIGURE in a very rough way. |
| 18/10/2007
I didn't get into my studio until
early afternoon. I then worked all afternoon on AS I CLIMBED THE
HILL THE DEAD CROW WENT TO HEAVEN - redefining the pencil lines with burnt
umber acrylic paint.
During part of the evening I did
more preliminary work on FOUR CHAPTERS FROM A BOOK I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN
(THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A COMPUTER SCREEN) and A SYMPHONIC PRESCRIPTION
OF SIX TABLETS - BASED ON AN INSTALLATION COMPRISING FIFTEEN MANNEQUINS
WATCHING FIVE COLOURED BALLOONS SLOWLY DEFLATING (FILMED BY A MAN IN A
LOWLAND GORILLA SUIT). During the other part I ate and wrote this. |
| 19/10/2007
I completed the preliminary drawing
stage of FOUR CHAPTERS FROM A BOOK I HAVE NEVER WRITTEN (THE MAIN CHARACTER
IS A COMPUTER SCREEN) and A SYMPHONIC PRESCRIPTION OF SIX TABLETS - BASED
ON AN INSTALLATION COMPRISING FIFTEEN MANNEQUINS WATCHING FIVE COLOURED
BALLOONS SLOWLY DEFLATING (FILMED BY A MAN IN A LOWLAND GORILLA SUIT).
I have now pencilled in all the main shapes and structures.
I then started painting in AS I
CLIMBED THE HILL THE DEAD CROW WENT TO HEAVEN. However, I didn't
get much done before having to go out. |
| 20/10/2007
I managed to get into my studio
for a few hours on this Saturday afternoon. I did most of the first
painting stage of AS I CLIMBED THE HILL THE DEAD CROW WENT TO HEAVEN. |
| 23/10/2007
Out all day yesterday, dentist and
sundry other things this morning. However, I completed AS I CLIMBED
THE HILL THE CROW FLEW TO HEAVEN (new title) in the afternoon - painting
and repainting plus a small amount of extra detailing.I |
| 24/10/2007
I did a morning's worth of tweaking
to AS I CLIMBED THE HILL THE CROW FLEW TO HEAVEN - a little more needs
to be done at some point soon (I think).
In the afternoon I made a start
adding very small images to THE TRAIN SPOTTER. |
| 25/10/2007
I spent all my spare time adding
images to THE TRAIN SPOTTER. There are still some to be done.
I worked out the theme and composition
to a pendant work to ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT
while travelling to see my father - I had forgotten it all by the time
I got back home! |
| 26/10/2007
After an inexorable amount of fiddling
I finished adding all the images to THE TRAIN SPOTTER - they will still
need painting in.
Very late in the day I started painting
THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE - needless to say I didn't get very far |
| 28/10/2007
It was a very wet Sunday so I spent
most of the time in my studio; painting THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE. |
| 29/10/2007
I was a bit late getting going,
however, I finished the main stage of THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE.
I need to reinforce some of the lines and add a little extra detailing
- possibly tomorrow if I get time. |
| 30/10/2007
I was out with my wife most of the
day. When I got in I more or less finished THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE.
However, I will probably look at it again in the day light. |
| 31/10/2007
Not much time to work today.
I didn't like what I saw when I returned to THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE
in the daylight. I decided to add a number of new compositional elements
and amend others. |
| 01/11/2007
Even less time to work than yesterday.
I began painting in the alterations to THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE but
did not mange to finish them. |
| 02/11/2007
A frustrating and unproductive day
to end an unproductive week. I did manage to finish the amendments
to THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE.
I then repainted a large part of
AS I CLIMBED THE HILL THE CROW FLEW TO HEAVEN. I planned to make
a small change but nothing like the extent of the final amendments. |
| 05/11/2007
The start of what seems likely to
be another unproductive week. I began to add preliminary pencil images
to FEMALE OR MALE FIGURE before having to go out again. There will
no creative work tomorrow. |
| 05/11/2007
I bought six hundred pounds worth
of art materials but didn't have time to do any work! |
| 07/11/2007
I finished adding the pencil images
to MALE OR FEMALE FIGURE - hopefully I will get them painted by the end
of the week.
I then started filling in all the
small images in THE TRAINSPOTTER. |
| 08/11/2007
Out most of the day. I finished
THE TRAINSPOTTER but didn't bother starting anything else. |
| 09/11/2007
Out most of the day again (ditto
tomorrow). I worked on MALE OR FEMALE FIGURE - but didn't finish
it. |
| 12/11/2007
I spent yesterday (Sunday) in the
garden and decided to spend a large part of today likewise (shouldn't have
done as I am not producing a lot of work at the moment). When I did
decide to enter into my studio I got round to finishing MALE OR FEMALE
FIGURE - painting in and detailing.
I also returned (hopefully for the
last time) to AS I CLIMBED THE HILL THE CROW FLEW TO HEAVEN. Repainting
a foreground section to close to how it was originally. |
| 13/11/2007
I started a new small portrait -
no title at the moment. I did the initial pencil drawing and painted
most of the canvas. Unfortunately very little else was done. |
| 14/11/2007
Very little time to paint.
I finished the main painting stage of the small portrait canvas: MAN COMING
HOME. |
| 15/11/2007
I reinforced the pencil lines in
MAN COME COMING HOME with paint. No time for anything else. |
| 16/11/2007
For personal reasons I had practically
no time to paint today. I started adding facial feature images to
one of the small SELF PORTRAIT AS PETER PANIC pictures. I may try
and dedicate an hour to painting tomorrow to finish this. |
| 17/11/2007
I stayed in my studio a large part
of the morning. I finished adding the imagery to the first and then
the second version of SELF PORTRAIT AS PETER PANIC. The least said
about the afternoon the better. |
| 18/11/2007
Another wet Sunday (I was supposed
to go out) so I spent a good part of the day in my studio. I started
the pencil stage of three new "portrait events": SAYING GOODBYE TO
ALI, THE KISS and THE ARTIST ALONE PAINTING HIS PORTRAIT. |
| 19/11/2007
I had to get the remainder of my
paintings from the now closed Hearn & Scott gallery. I then spent
most of the afternoon sorting them out. When not doing this I was
finishing the initial pencil drawing stage of SAYING GOODBYE TO ALI, THE
KISS and THE ARTIST ALONE PAINTING HIS PORTRAIT. |
| 20/11/2007
I had to collect some paintings
from a gallery in New Milton. While down there I took the opportunity
to walk to the coast - even though it was pouring with rain! Once
I had eventually come back from this very wet adventure there was no time
to work. |
| 21/11/2007
I started the day by doing the rough
pencil stage of three new medium sixed portraits: PANDORIC PORTRAIT OF
THE PIXIE GIRL, NEBULOUS PORTRAIT OF A GIRL and PORTRAIT OF A GIRL: VERTICAL
DEVELOPMENT.
Later in the day I started
adding facial feature variations MAN COMING HOME. Unfortunately I
had to go out before I could finish it. |
| 22/11/2007
I finished adding the imagery (which
has to be painted) to MAN COMING HOME early in the day.
After a temporary disruption I started
the rough sketch stage of three landscapes: LANDSCAPE FOUND IN A WINE GLASS
RAISED TO THE MORNING SUN, LANDSCAPE FOUND AMONG THE WARSHIPS OF THE FIRST
WORLD WAR (RING EILEEN, MENTION WINE) and LANDSCAPE FOUND ON THE SOUL OF
MY SHOE AFTER I HAD RETURNED HOME.
In the evening I started the drawing
stage of GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS FIRST PICTURE. This is a cartoonish
and frivolous painting featuring one of my "characters". |
| 23/11/2007
Late into my studio. Once
in there I finished MAN COMING HOME - filling in all the images.
I also went over the pencil lines
with acrylic paint on THE KISS and THE ARTIST ALONE PAINTING HIS PORTRAIT
and started doing likewise to SAYING GOODBYE TO ALI. |
| 24/11/2007
I finished the lines of SAYING GOODBYE
TO ALI and then went out into a very cold garden. |
| 26/11/2007
Out of the blue I started modifying
(again!) THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE.
I also started painting the lines
of LANDSCAPE FOUND ON THE SOUL OF MY SHOE AFTER I HAD RETURNED HOME although
I felt I should have been adding images to a more serious work instead. |
| 27/11/2007
I altered THINKING WOMAN IN A LANDSCAPE
yet again! This is definitely the last time!!.
I then finished painting the lines
of LANDSCAPE FOUND ON THE SOUL OF MY SHOE AFTER I HAD RETURNED HOME - this
was quite a protracted process.
Towards the end of the day I finished
the drawing stage of GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS FIRST PICTURE. I have
two more to do in this small series.
I also did the pencil stage of a
small "Ionist Dream" portrait - again the first of a series of three.
This is entitled YOUNG GIRL ASLEEP IN A WINE GLASS.
Finally I started adding the pencil
images to A DAY IN THE LIVES OF PETER PANIC. |
| 28/11/2007
I did the pencil drawing stage of
the remaining two "Gerry Hattrick" paintings: GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS
SECOND PICTURE and GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS THIRD PICTURE.
I then did the pencil stage of the
remaining two "Dream" portraits: YOUNG GIRL ASTRIDE A WINDMILL and YOUNG
GIRL ON A BURNING BUSH (DICTAMNUS ALBUS). |
| 29/11/2007
I was out both ends of the day,
in between I started to repaint the pencil lines of LANDSCAPE FOUND AMONG
THE WARSHIPS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR (RING EILEEN, MENTION WINE) with acrylic
paint. Nothing else was done except some quick sketches. |
| 30/11/2007
I finished repainting the pencil
lines (with acrylic paint) of LANDSCAPE FOUND AMONG THE WARSHIPS OF THE
FIRST WORLD WAR (RING EILEEN, MENTION WINE).
I then repainted the lines of LANDSCAPE
FOUND IN A WINE GLASS RAISED TO THE MORNING SUN. The rest of the
day was spent in fruitless artistic endeavours. |
| 01/12/2007
After giving the dog a very long
walk, and other Saturday pursuits, I repainted the pencil lines on YOUNG
GIRL ASLEEP IN A WINE GLASS, YOUNG GIRL ASTRIDE A WINDMILL and YOUNG GIRL
ON A BURNING BUSH (DICTAMNUS ALBUS). |
| 02/12/2007
A very wet Sunday so I never went
to work at Stonehenge as planned. I repainted the lines on GERRY
HATTRICK PAINTS HIS FIRST PICTURE, GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS SECOND PICTURE
and GERRY HATTRICK PAINTS HIS THIRD PICTURE. |
| 03/12/2007
A long walk in the countryside and
then back in my studio. I painted the pencil lines of NEBULOUS PORTRAIT
OF A GIRL and PORTRAIT OF A GIRL: VERTICAL DEVELOPMENT. I didn't
get round to the last work in the series. |
| 04/12/2007
I painted over the pencil lines
of the last of the three experimental portraits: PANDORIC PORTRAIT OF THE
PIXIE GIRL. I had no time to do anything else. |
| 05/12/2007
A day given partly over to Christmas
present searching (that reminds me I haven't started my cards yet) but
I began painting all three of the small portraits: YOUNG GIRL ASLEEP IN
A WINE GLASS, YOUNG GIRL ASTRIDE A WINDMILL and YOUNG GIRL ON A BURNING
BUSH (DICTAMNUS ALBUS).
I also did quite a bit of work to
A DAY IN THE LIVES OF PETER PANIC - adding figurative and semi-abstract
images in pencil. |
