Summer 2007
02/07/2007

I completed THE TRANSFIGURED DAY - of course listening to the radio as well.  If I had a bigger studio I would like to do some very large scale ionist pictures, now that my eyes are not good enough to produce intricate images on smaller scale works.

03/07/2007

I tidied the painted lines in both THE LIFE AND TIMES OF QUARTERMAN and TRANSFIGURED DAY.  This took most of the afternoon - after spending the morning writing e-mails.  I spent the evening writing things like this and preparing works for a show in Hearn & Scott.

04/07/2007

More preparing of paintings in the morning.

Later I started working again on ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT; painting over the charcoal lines (delineating the "organic" structures) with graphite acrylic paint and then painting in some of the "geometric" structures.

I had IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF on my other easel but I did very little work on it.

05/07/2007

I completed all the preparations for my forthcoming show.  I then worked again on ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT; finishing the painting of both the geometric and organic structures.

06/07/2007

I hung my exhibition at Hearn & Scott today which didn't leave much time to do anything else.  However, I started painting in the background of ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT but never finished it.  I am having a weeks' holiday next week but I will have to find time to complete this stage if nothing else.

11/07/2007

I am on holiday with my wife this week; I only did two hours painting today, which was enough time to complete the main stage of ECHOES: A BURIAL AT ORNANS - SYMPHONY IN ONE MOVEMENT.

12/07/2007

Even less time working today!  I reprimed an old work for a new painting (based on a very early ultra-complex drawing entitled FISH THINKS - IMMORTALITY).  This has the working title of A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND.

13/07/2007

Twenty minutes work: "portrait" sketches based on ships and machinery at Southampton Docks.

17/07/2007

Back in my studio after a week of going out and sundry domestic activities.  In the early morning I did the pencil drawing of the first stage of A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND and returned to the work in the late afternoon to go over the lines in acrylic paint.

In between I worked on IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF, completing the pencil stage of all the main images - I will go over these with acrylic paint in due course.  The smaller images will probably be painted directly with thin acrylic paint.

18/07/2007

I spent most of the time available to me today painting in the structures I created yesterday in A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND.  All my other artistic activities were done in my head.

19/07/2007

Quite a good day today!  I did the pencil images in the main sections of A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND and later went over them with acrylic colour.

I also did a bit of reworking of IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF.

20/07/2007

Cricket on radio!  I worked for almost the entire day painting in the small images in A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND.

23/07/2007

I painted at odd times throughout the day.  I drew in additional images in A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND, some of which will require painting while others will remain as pencil symbols.

24/07/2007

I finished A FISH DREAMS OF DRY LAND by painting over some of the linear elements.  I felt that the rest of the pencil imagery did not require tidying up in the context of this particular work.

Later in the day I began adding further pencil images to IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF - almost completing this stage.

25/07/2007

A rather curtailed day.  I did more of the pencil stage of adding images to IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF but still haven't completed it.

26/07/2007

I finished adding all the pencil images to IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF.  I will have to paint over the majority of these lines and fill in a lot of images in due course.

I then started adding pencil images - figurative imagery, shapes and symbols - to IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.  It is unlikely I will finish this stage this week.

27/07/2007

A very reasonable day.  I actually managed to finish adding all the pencil images (and then started to paint over the lines with thin acrylic paint) on IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.  No work tomorrow or probably Sunday.

30/07/2007

Out and about a bit today but still managed a fair amount of time in my studio.  I started to paint over the pencil lines on IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF and IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.  Due to their complexity I probably won't finish either work until next week.

31/07/2007

I continued working on IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF and IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER - painting over the pencil lines with black, grey and brown acrylic paint.

I also belatedly printed the summer issue of the FPS newsletter.

01/08/2007

Today was almost a repeat of yesterday with work continued on IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF and IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER

02/08/2007

Out with my wife and family all day.  However, there was a brief respite when they went shopping and I worked on a sketchbook of miscellaneous drawings.

03/08/2007

A late start but I finished repainting all the lines  in both IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF and IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER

06/08/2007

I spent a large part of the day painting in the images of IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.  The rest of the day was spent in the garden or constructing yet another screen play in my head.  I suspect this pattern will be repeated all week.

07/08/2007

I finished IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.  I completed the painting in of the images and other motifs and then deliberately put the work away.  This is the fourth work finished of the "The Peter Panic Renaissance".

08/08/2007

I made fairly slow progress painting in the images of IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF.  A lot remains to be done!

09/08/2007

After a late start I continued filling in the figurative images and symbols IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF.  There is still more to be done!

10/08/2007

A rather frustrating day but I have finished IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF.  This is the fourth and last of this small "Peter Panic" series.

I put AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE on my easel - but only had time to look at it.

13/08/2007

Like all of yesterday, I spent the morning in the garden.  Consequently I didn't have much time to paint today.  I started painting in symbols (rather too spontaneously) on AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE.

14/08/2007

I finished painting in the symbols in AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE - using the same approach as yesterday.  They will need filling in.  The rest of the day was taken up with paperwork.

15/08/2007

I painted in all the symbols and shapes in AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE.  I will look at the work again tomorrow before I declare it finished.

I am in the process of purchasing a huge studio easel - I am hoping it will be delivered next week.

16/08/2007

An old fashioned nice day (which I don't seem to get anymore!).  I tweaked and tidied up AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE in the early morning.

Later, after looking through the large amount of pictures I am currently working on I decided to reappraise some early Ionist drawings (of the "Petronella Period").  I started to paint over the pencil lines in some of the structures of GOD STUDY ONE - MEASUREMENTS FROM INFINITY (3 OVER 4).  I actually finished this work in 1984 and it has been exhibited many times!

I will also make some limited amendments to GOD STUDY TWO - QUESTIONS AND ANSWER.

17/08/2007

I finished painting over the specific lines on GOD STUDY ONE - MEASUREMENTS FROM INFINITY (3 OVER 4).  Unfortunately I didn't have time to do anything else.

20/08/2007

There are few tangible results from my time in my studio today.  I am working on images for a number of works - all are started and await the addition of figurative images or symbols.  I have done quite a few pages of abbreviated notes but this still looks a bit meagre.  I did get my new easel though.

21/08/2007

The morning was occupied (before I had to go out) with scribbling out more images for sundry new works.

The afternoon was spent (once I had got in again) painting in the main layer of the first of six new acrylic works - the initial drawing stage done much earlier in the year.  Some of these works have the thematic imagery already worked out, others have only a title or not even that.

22/08/2007

The limited amount of the day which was available for artistic pursuits (artistic should be in inverted commas as I consider myself as more of a scientist/philosopher than an artist) was used working out ideas and images for some of the vast array of uncompleted works.  Peter Panic insists on a great deal of forethought!

23/08/2007

Late start!  I started painting abstracted images in the strands of the second version of THE LOVERS.  Early finish!

24/08/2007

I finished adding the images to THE LOVERS and then painted them in - I had to out in the evening but I had almost completed this process.

26/08/2007

A Bank Holiday Sunday so most of my time was spent in the garden.  However, I finished the pencil drawings of PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL series in a small sketch book - 25 in all - in the evening.

27/08/2007

I tweaked THE LOVERS as early as I could - which wasn't that early.

I then started painting in the background of the second "Peter Panic Renaissance" work using acrylic paint (Peter Panic likes acrylic) - however, I kept getting distracted so never quite finished it.

28/08/2007

After fiddling around too much of the morning I decided to add the images (using oil and alkyd medium) to the relevant areas of SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BEACH AT MUDEFORD (CAN WE BE IN TWO TIMES AT ONCE).  I subsequently filled in some but a few remain for tomorrow.

I then completed the background layer of paint on the work I started yesterday.

29/08/2007

I finished SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BEACH AT MUDEFORD (CAN WE BE IN TWO TIMES AT ONCE) - filling in all the images with white paint and then painting into this.

I then started painting in the images (for a brief period only) on HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS.

30/08/2007

I worked for a large part of the day on HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS, adding semi-figurative imagery with alkyd thinned oil paint.  The yellow squares were painted with images suggested by the gestural brushstrokes of the background and the purple squares are variations on a motif suggested by the theme/title.

31/08/2007

Not too much time to paint today although I managed to finish painting in the images on HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS.

I also worked on some ideas for sculptures which I will never do.

02/09/2007

After a few hours in the garden I worked again on HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS, filling in the colour in all the images.  I finished the work by the end of the afternoon and then dropped it - breaking off part of the corner!

03/09/2007

I spent a large part of the day working on JUNE AND I TRANSFIXED BY THE TAIL LIGHTS OF TIME.  I added all the words (representing June and I) and symbols.  There is some other detailing and filling in left for tomorrow.

04/09/2007

I filled in the symbols of JUNE AND I TRANSFIXED BY THE TAIL LIGHTS OF TIME and redefined some of the lines.  I didn't have time to do anything else - I do not seem to be using my time productively at the moment.

05/09/2007

I worked on INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE and INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED LAST - mainly painting in the secondary symbols sequences.  I have worked out most of the main image development but will have to paint it in at a later date.

I then started work on THE CROSSROADS, adding figurative images to the intersecting strips.

06/09/2007

After a late start I finished painting all the figurative fantasy images in the strips of THE CROSSROADS.  I made some rough notes for other paintings and then had to go out.

07/09/2007

I completed THE CROSSROADS, although some of the lines may need repainting.  The rest of the day was taken up with domestic matters.

09/09/2007

I had to sort out (and find!) paintings for delivery to a gallery on Tuesday.  After accomplishing this I spent the afternoon in the garden.

10/09/2007

Much of the day was taken up with framing and varnishing paintings for my forthcoming show, although I did have a meeting at a possible new venue for presenting my work.

11/09/2007

Delivered work to the ArtShed gallery in New Milton and walked to the beach for a brief period (with associated drawing once I got there) - this is the area of the UK I would like to move to!.

When I got in I did a little tweaking to THE CROSSROADS, wrote things like this but very little else.

13/09/2007

For a variety of reasons I didn't get any work done yesterday; despite high expectations.  Thankfully, I did some today.  I added a series of symbols to HOT LANDSCAPE - DANAE 20.  The intersecting series of figurative images still need to be added.

I then added all the semi-figurative imagery to DIVIDING SEQUENCE (using alkyd modified oils).  They need to be filled in at some point.

At the end of the day I started writing down ideas and/or images for 81/2 EVENTS and DIVIDED HEAD.  I hope to start work again on these pictures tomorrow.

14/09/2007

I am worried that I am not as productive as I used to be.  That said, I completed another work today.  I filled in all the images of DIVIDING SEQUENCE and touched up some of the lines.

16/09/2007

Untypically for a Sunday I did a few hours painting.  I added all the small images (facial feature variations) to DIVIDED HEAD.  Once I completed this I went out into the garden!

17/09/2007

Despite distractions I added the remaining images to HOT LANDSCAPE - DANAE 20 and I also added all the images to SUPPORTED IMAGE - BROKEN LANDSCAPE.  Both sets of images will need filling in.

18/09/2007

I finished DIVIDED HEAD by filling in all the images with very pale paint, which I subsequently painted into.  After a bit of fiddling I was (finally) reasonably pleased with the end result.

19/09/2007

I completed another two works: HOT LANDSCAPE - DANAE 20 and SUPPORTED IMAGE - BROKEN LANDSCAPE.  All that was needed was to fill in the semi-figurative images and tidy up the lines.

20/09/2007

I painted in all the figurative scenes in the squares of EIGHT AND A HALF EVENTS after arriving back home around midday.

I then prepared all the paintings for a show I am hanging tomorrow in a local health centre.

21/09/2007

I hung my exhibition in the Oasis Dental Centre (with some difficulty as the picture nails would not go in some of the walls! - I'm hoping the paintings stay up!!).

In the afternoon I filled in all the imagery in EIGHT AND A HALF  EVENTS and completed the work.

24/09/2007

No painting although I did spend quite a lot of time working on an Ionist Artletter to promote my work.

I also returned to the Oasis Centre to label my pictures - I had produced the labels on Sunday.

25/09/2007

Still no painting but I finished the Artletter.

I also sketched out on scrap paper the imagery for A DAY IN MY LIFE AS A SCENE FROM THE TROJAN WAR - OR HOW TO BE YOURSELF AND YOUR ENEMY.

26/09/2007

I painted all the images into the blocks of  A DAY IN MY LIFE AS A SCENE FROM THE TROJAN WAR - OR HOW TO BE YOURSELF AND YOUR ENEMY.  Unfortunately I didn't have time to do anything else.

27/09/2007

I completed A DAY IN MY LIFE AS A SCENE FROM THE TROJAN WAR - OR HOW TO BE YOURSELF AND YOUR ENEMY by filling in the images (in a casual way) with thinned paint.

I started adding figurative imagery to INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE but I didn't get very far as I decided to make quite a few amendments to the Ionist Art brochure.

28/09/2007

I finished adding all the images to INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE.

I then added all the images (same themes but different presentation) to INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED LAST.  Today was reasonably productive even though it didn't actually feel like it.
