Spring
2007
| 01/04/2007
I added the remaining symbols to
NUDE ON A CHAIR and NUDE ON A BEACH. This didn't take too long and
I then went out into the garden for the afternoon.
The latest issue of the FPS newsletter
has also now been completed. |
| 02/04/2007
I think this is going to be a fairly
lacksadaisical week, with the Easter holidays starting at the end of it.
Consequently I had a chilled out sort of day. I painted in the symbols
(thus completing) on NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR (versions One and Two), RECLINING
NUDE and NUDE BEFORE A MIRROR. |
| 03/04/2007
Out with June most of the day.
When I got in I painted in the symbols of NUDE ON A CHAIR and NUDE ON A
BEACH. |
| 05/04/2007
Out yesterday, out in the morning
today. When in my studio I added all the symbols to both versions
of CHRIS THE BARBER - although I may change the titles. I will finish
these two works over the Easter holidays. |
| 08/04/2007
I took time off from all the multifarious
Easter and other non artistic activities to complete both versions of CHRIS
THE BARBER. All I had to do was paint in the small symbols which
didn't take very long. |
| 10/04/2007
There isn't going to be much work
done this week! Today I completed the line repainting of the
new serious Ionist work started on the Thursday before last. I then
repainted the lines of two other similar works. The fourth will hopefully
get done next Thursday as I am out all day tomorrow. |
| 12/04/2007
As planned I painted over the lines
of the fourth serious work.
I then touched up the lines of the
two THE BARBER SHOP paintings and made some additions - I didn't do much
however. |
| 16/04/2007
Back into my studio afer a bit of
a hiatus. I did a little more on both THE BARBER SHOP paintings -
mainly adding detailing and enhancing the background elements.
After this I started a third BARBER
SHOP picture (rough pencil lines which have to be brought together).
This version is a condensation and simplification of all previous versions.
I then started two landscapes in
a new style of colour blocks. I did the pencil stage of both, outlining
the main shapes, and then went over this with oil paint. |
| 17/04/2007
I was out until early afternoon
- dental appointment etc.etc. When I finally settled into my studio
(which took a little while as I have a bad cold and I am not feeling that
energetic) I worked again on both versions of THE BARBER SHOP; adding detailing
and symbols etc.
I then completed the preliminary
pencil stage of THE BARBER SHOP version three. |
| 18/04/2007
I was out for most of the day.
During my brief spell in my studio I went over the pencil lines of THE
BARBER SHOP THREE with thinned oil paint. |
| 19/04/2007
Again I was out for a large portion
of the day. When I was able to work I started the painting in of
THE BARBER SHOP THREE; almost completing the main stage. My cold
has got worse which doesn't help - nor does listening to cricket
on the radio! |
| 20/04/2007
Late start - I finished the main
stage of THE BARBER SHOP THREE and then started the detailing. A
little more is left to do. |
| 23/04/2007
Back in my studio after a garden
(etc.) break. I did the main painting stage of the two, as yet untitled,
landscapes. In fact I painted and then repainted much of the first
one - which meant I had no time to do anything else.
I may not have time to paint tomorrow
but I will try at least to name these works. |
| 26/04/2007
I am hoping to have more time to
paint next week. Today I finished the two landscapes, now entitled
RESIDUAL VOICES IN A LANDSCAPE and BLUE HILLS WITH MEMORIES PASSING THROUGH.
I then started the preliminary drawing
stage of a large version of NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR - after rearranging my
studio so that I can paint from a distance on one easel (very close up
on another). |
| 27/04/2007
I'm not going to have more time
to paint next week - hopefully the one after! Today I finished the
first two versions of the THE BARBER SHOP.
I also did a little more work on
NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR - but not much! |
| 03/05/2007
I returned to my studio, for a couple
of hours only, after a long absence. I added the images to the colour
blocks in the third THE BARBER SHOP painting. They will need to have
colour added.
I also made some amendments to the
background of MITZI IN BED, which I originally painted in 1999. |
| 04/05/2007
Not a lot of time to devote to painting
today - but more than yesterday! I completed THE BARBER SHOP (colouring
in the images added yesterday and amending some of my previous work). |
| 05/05/2007
I spent all of the afternoon painting.
I started work again on INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED
LAST - which was one of a series of twelve paintings (two sets of
six) started last year. Next week will probably be horrendous in
terms of painting time (being out on most days) but I should be able to
get back into my studio for extended periods from then on. |
| 09/05/2007
Back in my studio after the Bank
Holiday and other events. I worked on the painting stage of THE CROSS
ROADS and HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS - almost finishing both. |
| 10/05/2007
I spent the day continuing to work
on the series of simplified Ionist paintings. I completed THE CROSS
ROADS and HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS. I also finished SELF PORTRAIT
ON THE BEACH AT MUDEFORD (CAN WE BE IN TWO TIMES AT ONCE?), A DAY IN MY
LIFE AS A SCENE FROM THE TROJAN WAR - OR HOW TO BE YOURSELF AND YOUR ENEMY
and PORTRAIT DUET - JUNE AND I TRANSFIXED BY THE TAIL LIGHTS OF TIME. |
| 11/05/2007
Not much time to paint. In
the evening I finished INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED
LAST. This means the painting stage of all twelve works is completed
- I now have to work out and add all the thematic imagery. |
| 12/05/2007
Went to my Great Granddaughter's
first birthday party! However, I took a sketch book and did more
of the "Portrait Of A Girl" series. |
| 14/05/2007
Ill again - I must be getting old!
All I did was make notes for the three modified landscapes: TIME
LOOPS IN A LANDSCAPE, BRAIN IN A LANDSCAPE and AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES
WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE. |
| 15/05/2007
I didn't feel much like work.
I went over the pencil lines of the big NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR in graphite
acrylic and then started painting in oils. I'm hoping I feel better
tomorrow! |
| 16/05/2007
I started work on TIME LOOPS IN
A LANDSCAPE, adding the simple symbols to the outer sections. I also
made more notes for the other two works in the series, although I expect
to ignore them. |
| 17/05/2007
I did some more work on TIME LOOPS
IN A LANDSCAPE but then decided to leave the work for a day or two.
I then returned to painting NUDE
IN AN ARMCHAIR, painting large sections of the background. |
| 18/05/2007
I worked a little (operative word)
on INTERRUPTED SEQUENCE - THE FIRST VERSION PAINTED LAST, THE CROSS ROADS,
HOW TO SEE A THOUSAND DAYS, SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BEACH AT MUDEFORD (CAN
WE BE IN TWO TIMES AT ONCE?), A DAY IN MY LIFE AS A SCENE FROM THE TROJAN
WAR - OR HOW TO BE YOURSELF AND YOUR ENEMY and PORTRAIT DUET - JUNE AND
I TRANSFIXED BY THE TAIL LIGHTS OF TIME.
I also did more painting of NUDE
IN AN ARMCHAIR - almost finishing the main stage. |
| 19/05/2007
I completed the main painting stage
of NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR during the brief period spent in my studio. |
| 21/05/2007
Hardly any work done for no particular
reason, although I was out in the middle of the day. I have a terrible
feeling that this is going to be an unproductive year. I worked a
little (again) on TIME LOOPS IN A LANDSCAPE, BRAIN IN A LANDSCAPE and AN
INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT
ONCE. |
| 22/05/2007
I managed to finish (although this
may be up for review) TIME LOOPS IN A LANDSCAPE by adding very simple symbols
to the loop.
I then moved on to adding symbols,
based on anatomical fragments, to the vertical presentation areas of NUDE
IN AN ARMCHAIR. I aim to finish this painting by the end of the week. |
| 23/05/2007
I finished adding the symbols to
NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR, a process which took all of the slightly curtailed
day. I will paint them in tomorrow or the day after. |
| 24/05/2007
I finished NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR
as planned.
I then started work again on BRAIN
IN A LANDSCAPE; adding symbols and simplified figurative images. |
| 25/05/2007
I carried on adding symbols to BRAIN
IN A LANDSCAPE during the early part of the morning.
Later, when the test match started,
I began painting a large canvas I started several years ago - I can't remember
it's title at the moment. I have returned to using water soluble
oils for this work and eventually others in the series. |
| 27/05/2007
Very inclement weather. I
decided to spend the day in my studio (rather than the garden), where I
continued working on the unknown canvas. |
| 28/05/2007
A wet Bank Holiday so I didn't have
a full day in the garden as planned. Consequently I spent the morning
and early afternoon in my studio, finishing the first painting stage of
the large canvas started earlier - I still can't remember it's title! |
| 30/05/2007
A return to painting after the holiday
and other activities. I started adding symbols to the blocks of BRAIN
IN A LANDSCAPE - using linseed oil thinned oil paint; which doesn't always
adhere that well. |
| 31/05/2007
I initially made some changes to
NUDE IN AN ARMCHAIR and to both versions of CHRIS THE BARBER - simplifying
the colour scheme of the last two.
I then returned to working on BRAIN
IN A LANDSCAPE, completing the painting of all the symbols etc. by the
end of the day. |
| 01/06/2007
I finished BRAIN IN A LANDSCAPE
by filling in the symbols and figurative images painted previously - some
amendments were made. I used unthinned student quality oil paint
which should have a larger ratio of oil to pigment (plus filler of course!). |
| 04/06/2007
I didn't do any art work over the
weekend. Today I started painting the second large "forgotten title"
canvas. It is based on different arrangements of molecules - the
second work blatantly exploring this theme.
I re-titled BRAIN IN A LANDSCAPE
to THE BRAIN WITHIN A LANDSCAPE, which was the original title and is more
suggestive of the theme. |
| 05/06/2007
Carried on painting the large canvas,
amid many domestic chores! I have now found the titles! This
work is called MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION and the other one, which I started
painting earlier, is called THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY. |
| 07/06/2007
I spent the day painting MOLECULAR
CRUCIFIXION, almost finishing the first stage - save the margin which I
hope to complete tomorrow. |
| 08/06/2007
I painted the margin of MOLECULAR
CRUCIFIXION- after spending too long in the garden!
In the afternoon I started to paint
two of the new long ionist works using acrylic paint. These works
use the same format as my complex pencil works of the early Eighties -
most of which I spoilt (and will have to paint over the pencil) when I
varnished them all on the same day and applied the varnish far too thickly
which caused running and yellowing. |
| 10/06/2007
I continued working on the new ionist
works for a brief period in the morning before giving in to the attractions
of the garden. I completed the main painting stage of the first work. |
| 11/06/2007
Not a particularly productive day.
I worked on the other three new ionist works, completing the first stage
of one work and then putting in a background coat on the remaining two
after which I started to paint in all the sequential blocks. |
| 12/06/2007
More work on the new ionist paintings.
I drew with pencil a series of figurative images in the thematic blocks
of the work now titled TRANSFIGURED DAY - this refers to THE TRANSFIGURATION
and related works of 1984 as well as Schoenberg.
I also added pencil detailing to
the surrounds of the blocks of the work now called THE LIFE AND TIMES OF
QUARTER MAN. I had actually done something similar to the above work.
I did a bit of painting to the other
two works. I haven't worked out titles for these very complex works
yet, although I am firming up the dominant themes. |
| 13/06/2007
Not that much time to paint today.
I finished adding the pencil images to TRANSFIGURED DAY and starting adding
them to THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A QUARTER MAN. |
| 14/06/2007
I completed the pencil imagery in
THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A QUARTER MAN. It is nice getting back to more
serious works..
I then started to add small symbols
and other images to SEATED WOMAN - which is work (with, at the moment,
a one-off format) which I started at least three years ago.
While painting I worked out in my
head two works to mirror the two large canvases I worked on recently.
These have the titles: FIRST SIGHTING OF THE SPACE SHIP OEDIPUS REX and
MOLECULAR MOVEMENTS ON THE YOUNG FACE OF TOMORROW. I also thought
about doing a huge (ten feet plus) strand painting. |
| 15/06/2007
I finished the main stage of the
third Neo-Ionist work which now has the working title of IDEATION ONE:
THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF. The fourth work
has the provisional title of IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS
DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER. |
| 18/06/2007
I spent the whole weekend in the
garden so no work other than jotting down a few ideas for a new series
of work.
Today, I had to unexpectedly go
out, hence no work again other than more of the above. I also scribbled
down the main themes for MEDITATIVE PROCESS ART: PARADIGM ONE & TWO. |
| 20/06/2007
Back in my studio, but only for
a couple of hours. I started work on IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM,
PUTS DOWN HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER. |
| 21/06/2007
More time to paint again.
I carried on painting IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN HER
GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER.
I also did further work on SEATED
WOMAN. I added more small images to the complex central structure,
making a very dense area of imagery. |
| 22/06/2007
A moderately better day! I
finished the main area of IDEATION TWO: YOUNG GIRL ENTERS ROOM, PUTS DOWN
HER GLASS AND PICKS UP A FLOWER. I then painted the margin of this
work and the margin of IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE GIRL WHO HID
FROM HERSELF.
I also (probably!) finished SEATED
WOMAN; adding the last images and painting in all the symbols. |
| 24/06/2007
I tweaked SEATED WOMAN (it is now
really finished!) and then went out into the garden - the weather was terrible. |
| 25/06/2007
I frittered away the morning; in
the afternoon I started to go over the pencil drawings on THE LIFE AND
TIMES OF QUARTER MAN (while listening to Wimbledon!) with acrylic jar colour. |
| 26/06/2007
I completed repainting the pencil
lines of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF QUARTER MAN - still listening to Wimbledon!
These are relatively small images which will be filled in with dark grey.
I also worked on the initial pencil
images within the block sequence of IDEATION ONE: THE STRANGE TALE OF THE
GIRL WHO HID FROM HERSELF. |
| 28/06/2007
I was late getting into my studio
- which is fairly typical these days. I started painting in the images
of THE LIFE AND TIMES OF QUARTER MAN, still using acrylic paint.
There is much more to do.
I am working (theoretically at least)
on a number of new portraits which combine text with imagery. I have
also recently purchased more small canvas boards for a series of landscape
which will be painted from photographs or life. I hope to get some
sheets of MDF next week for further strand/block sequential works. |
| 29/06/2007
I begun the day adding images to
THREE BATHERS. These first images were variations on three figures
within the "commentary strips" along the bottom of the work.
I then completed the filling in
of the images in THE LIFE AND TIMES OF QUARTER MAN, using a combination
of browns and greys. |
| 30/06/2007
I went out with June for most of
today. When I got in, and finally got my energy back, I started painting
in THE TRANSFIGURED DAY. This is another grey on brown work - all
my paintings should be grey on brown! |
