Autumn
2005
02/10/2005
Another Sunday. I
finished painting in THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN and then
went out in the garden (although I did work on my web site later in the
day).
|
03/10/2005
Redid all the lines of
THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN. This took a surprisingly
long time.
I then started work on A SERIAL
REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH
THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE" - however, I did not get very far before
I had to go out.
|
04/10/2005
I painted in all three
of the small portraits: which have the working titles of TOBY - PERSONA
ONE, TWO & THREE respectively. I had a loose plan of using three
distinct colour schemes but I am not sure if it has quite worked out like
that.
|
05/10/2005
Retouched, but not totally
repainted, all the lines of TOBY P - PERSONA ONE, TWO & THREE.
I then painted in all the background
areas of A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD
INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". The actual thematic
imagery will be drawn in and then painted.
|
06/10/2005
I decided to put a background
coat on some of the thematic areas of A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE
OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE".
I then repainted all the charcoal
lines of THE MOMENT WHEN ONE MAN BECAME MANY using dark grey acrylic paint.
Towards the end of the day I started to repaint the charcoal lines of MOLECULAR
CRUCIFIXION. I may do a bit more on Sunday or I may not!
|
07/10/2005
Out today: continued on
the pencil landscapes - I have almost finished another series. Out
all day tomorrow!
|
09/10/2005
I planned a morning painting
and an afternoon in the garden (as it is Sunday) but I spent most of the
day making changes to my websites. However, I have started to make
notes for THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN.
|
10/10/2005
I completed repainting
the lines of MOLECULAR CRUCIFIXION with dark grey acrylic by mid afternoon.
I then made a tentative start adding the main imagery to A SERIAL REPRESENTATION
OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING:
"ION - SUNRISE".
|
11/10/2005
I have more or less finished
the three small portraits: TOBY P - PERSONA ONE, TWO & THREE.
I will look at them again tomorrow (if I get time) when it is light.
I added symbols which represented elements of the sitter's personality,
characteristics and/or ornamented facial features.
|
12/10/2005
Out today but managed more
pencil landscape drawings.
|
13/10/2005
I returned to adding thematic
imagery to A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD
INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". I filled in the secondary
blocks using oil paint (+ linseed oil) and also the main theme - initially
with pencil. Imagination and powers of invention did not run at customary
breakneck speed (probably because of tiredness - very early start to the
day as I had to go out). I also worked on the background symbols
etc.
|
14/10/2005
Drew in with pencil the
remainder of the thematic material in A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE
OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE"
and then painted the lines with acrylic paint. I have also, probably,
finished the background imagery.
|
16/10/2005
I was out most of this
Sunday. However I did start a series of oil pastel portraits when
I got in.
|
17/10/2005
Out all of today (ditto
much of this week) so no time for painting. More landscape drawings
however.
|
18/10/2005
Another day out; another
landscape pencil sketch!
|
19/10/2005
Out yet again so further
pencil landscapes.
|
20/10/2005
I drew, with pencil and
then oil paint, another of the very small "Ionist" portraits. This
one, entitled SMALL PORTRAIT OF JENNY, may be the last in the current series.
After this I continued painting
in A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED
WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE".
|
21/10/2005
Painted in SMALL PORTRAIT
OF JENNY. I then went back to painting A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF
THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION
- SUNRISE".
|
23/10/2005
An atypical Sunday as I
spent most of it indoors. I started work on the (charcoal) drawing
stage of two very large canvases - I actually got the canvases free - which
will combine my "Meditative Field Painting" format with other developmental
formats. One has a characteristic "Meditative Portrait" structural
mass in front and other will have an overlaid serial structure typical
of my "Meditative Process Painting".
Later in the afternoon I returned
to painting A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD
INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". A work I hope to finish
tomorrow.
|
24/10/2005
I have, more or less, finished
A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED
WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". I completed painting all the
draw in elements but at the end of the day started to add additional imagery.
Before that I went over the lines in the thematic blocks, yet again, with
black paint - However, I may need to amend some of the images in this section.
I also glazed one of the background accompaniment blocks.
|
25/10/2005
I finished SMALL PORTRAIT
OF JENNY before lunch. Then there was a minor domestic crisis (which
included me hanging from the loft opening with the steps fallen away!)
so it was much later than planned before I could start work again on A
SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED
WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". I added even more imagery and
then painted them all in. However, at the end of the day I drew in
further elements which I may paint in on Thursday. I am out tomorrow.
|
26/10/2005
Out all day - so back to
pencil drawings!
|
27/10/2005
I painted in recently drawn
images in A SERIAL REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD
INTERMIXED WITH THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE" but added further for completion
tomorrow.
I then turned to adding structures
and images to THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN.
|
28/10/2005
I finally finished A SERIAL
REPRESENTATION OF THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO AT STOURHEAD INTERMIXED WITH
THE PAINTING: "ION - SUNRISE". I added painted the remaining drawn
images and filled in the margin.
I then carried on with THIS IS WHERE
I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN and also started work again on two works
(currently titleless) which are based on still lifes but also explore the
possibility of a spiritual reality. These works were originally started
in 1999.
|
29/10/2005
I have just about finished
another set of landscape improvisations in pencil.
|
30/10/2005
Another funny Sunday:
I spent part of the day working on the two extended still lifes.
Each has the working title of SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL. Both are actually
painted over earlier paintings. The original works were in a strange
style which I never felt very comfortable with.
I then started to work again on
THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN but had to go out in the middle
of the afternoon so very little was accomplished.
|
31/10/2005
I thought I would do a
bit of work on THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN before starting
something else but ended up spending all day on it. I will do a bit
tomorrow and then start something else!
|
01/11/2005
I did the drawing in charcoal
of two small works. One entitled STILL LIFE IN A LANDSCAPE and the
other FLOWER ARRANGEMENT IN A LANDSCAPE.
I also did more work on the SEARCHING
FOR THE SOUL paintings and THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN.
|
02/11/2005
I repainted the lines of
STILL LIFE IN A LANDSCAPE and FLOWER ARRANGEMENT IN A LANDSCAPE using undiluted
oil paint.
I later worked again on the drawing
stage of the two new large scale works (both are still titleless).
|
03/11/2005
Out all day - more drawings!
|
04/11/2005
It should have been a day
painting but I devoted most of the day to DIY and other domestic chores.
I did a little more work on THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN
during odd moments.
At the end of the day I finished
the current set of pencil landscapes.
|
05/11/2005
I made a window seat in
the morning (hopefully the end of my DIY for now), did nothing much in
the afternoon and started another book of drawings in the evening.
Not a very productive day.
|
06/11/2005
A very wet Sunday so I
couldn't venture out into the garden! I spent much of the day
in my studio; either before my easel or before the computer. I did
a little work on THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN (starting
to add imagery) and a little work on the two new very large scale works:
SELF PORTRAIT ON THE BRIDGE OF LIFE HISTORY and (probably) ALL STONE CIRCLES
RESIDE INSIDE A SINGLE CELL.
I then started the charcoal drawing
stage of two new oils. One is entitled TIME LOOPS IN A LANDCAPE and
the other THE BRAIN WITHIN A LANDSCAPE. Both are, very loosely, based
on aerial views of landscape.
|
07/11/2005
More DIY - Damn it!
However, most of the day was spent cutting up MDF for subsequent painting
on. In the late afternoon I started the charcoal drawing for a new
painting entitled AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER
OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE.
|
08/11/2005
I finished the charcoal
drawing stage of AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER
OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE.
I then made a start painting in
STILL LIFE IN A LANDSCAPE.
I am still working on THIS IS WHERE
I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN. I am also still cutting panels of
MDF for painting on!
I am out all day tomorrow.
|
10/11/2005
I more or less finished
STILL LIFE IN A LANDSCAPE and started painting in FLOWER ARRANGEMENT
IN A LANDSCAPE.
I have finished cutting up MDF panels
and hope to prime them next week.
I had a late start so I didn't get
as much work done as I hoped. I am out all day tomorrow.
I am hoping to hang a new
selection of work in the Hearn & Scott Gallery at some point in the
near future.
|
13/11/2005
Did a little painting on
this Sunday morning. I am managing the art shop for two weeks so
I wont be able to do much painting at all now. I am continuing to
work on FLOWER ARRANGEMENT IN A LANDSCAPE.
|
15/11/2005
A day off from the art
shop. I spent a large part of it putting new shelves in my library.
However, I did cut all the MDF panels for painting on. I am working
on a new series of pencil drawings during what little spare time I have.
|
21/11/2005
A second day off from the
art shop. This time I cut all of the hardboard panels. I made
some notes for THIS IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN but didn't actually
get round to painting anything.
|
27/11/2005
Sunday: back to a more
normal routine. I did a little painting in the afternoon. However
I took a long time to get it right so I wasn't as productive as I would
have liked. I finished STILL LIFE IN A LANDSCAPE.
|
28/11/2005
More or less a full day
of painting (slow start however!). I finished FLOWER ARRANGEMENT
IN A LANDSCAPE. Like yesterday it was a slow process, with a lot
of repainting.
I then returned to working on THIS
IS WHERE I MET THE ELEPHANT HEADED MAN. I added more structures/primary
elements and refined others.
|
29/11/2005
I started to repaint a
number of pictures which I originally completed in 1998. I completed
one work entitled THE PAST IS A POOL I WOULD LIKE TO PLUNGE IN and started
two others: EVENT 98 and YOU ARE BORN, YOU LIVE, YOU DIE. All represent
amended landscapes with superimposed symbol strands.
|
30/11/2005
More of the dreaded DIY
today! I did however add symbols to the sequential blocks in YOU
ARE BORN, YOU LIVE, YOU DIE.
I also cut more hardboard panels
to paint on and did a bit of drawing in the evening.
|
01/12/2005
A bit more DIY (as it is
woodwork, I really quite enjoy it) in the morning. I then reworked
the smaller GIRL IN A LANDSCAPE - simply because I accidentally came across
it (I have never been fully happy the work). It now looks like I
originally intended.
After this I completed YOU ARE BORN,
YOU LIVE, YOU DIE (I am not sure if I am happy with this work now!).
Then I added the symbols in the
thematic strands of EVENT 98 and amended the background. This went
reasonably well and I should finish the painting tomorrow.
|
02/12/2005
I completed EVENT 98 by
painting in the images and adding extra element sto the background..
I then did a little work on both versions SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL - repainting
some of the lines and redefining some of the coloured areas.
After this I returned to AN INFINITE
NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE and
started painting over the charcoal lines with thinned watersoluble oil
paint. I had to go out before finishing this.
|
03/12/2005
I was out all day but finished
painting the charcoal lines of AN INFINITE NUMBER OF PLACES WHERE AN INFINITE
NUMBER OF THINGS HAPPEN AT ONCE in the evening. No time for anything
else.
|
05/12/2005
I painted over the charcoal
lines of TIME LOOPS IN A LANDCAPE and THE BRAIN WITHIN A LANDSCAPE.
I will probably paint in the resulting thematic blocks during the next
couple of weeks.
At the end of the day I did the
initial pencil drawing for a new painting on canvas board with the working
title of SELF PORTRAIT AS THE WOLFMAN. I plan to start two other
small canvas board works this week.
|
06/12/2005
Christmas shopping with
my wife! Very little work done!!
I did go over the pencil lines of
SELF PORTRAIT AS THE WOLFMAN with thinned water soluble oil paint.
|
07/12/2005
A reasonably productive
day (despite having a lot of non artistic things to do). I did the
pencil stage of two new "Meditative Landscapes": MISCELLANEOUS PEOPLE HIDDEN
IN A LANDSCAPE and THE PLACE WHERE FRED THE GHOST BECAME FRED THE ARTIST.
These are much more complex than recent works in this style.
|
08/12/2005
I am still finding a lot
of extra-artistic things to do. However, I painted the pencil lines
of MISCELLANEOUS PEOPLE HIDDEN IN A LANDSCAPE and started painting the
lines of THE PLACE WHERE FRED THE GHOST BECAME FRED THE ARTIST. I
used water/painting medium thinned water soluble oil paint for both works.
|
09/12/2005
Out in the morning and
then a series of inconsequential things when I got in. When I finally
settled in front of my easel I completed painting over the pencil lines
of THE PLACE WHERE FRED THE GHOST BECAME FRED THE ARTIST. I then
did a little work on the two large canvases which have been leaning against
the studio wall for ages.
|
11/12/2005
A not terribly productive
Sunday: I added the detailing of the head sequence of SELF PORTRAIT
AS THE WOLFMAN - first in pencil and then in thinned water soluble oil
paint).
|
12/12/2005
I spent the day painting
in SELF PORTRAIT AS THE WOLFMAN and listening to Highway 61 Revisited by
Bob Dylan (I recently got a new copy).
Nothing else was done.
|
13/12/2005
I completed painting in
SELF PORTRAIT AS THE WOLFMAN. I need now to add the figurative images
and symbols etc.
I also did the initial drawing in
pencil of four small works with the generic title of GIRL IN A MEADOW.
All four were in a landscape format. I feel I need to do a couple
in portrait (the majority of my "Meditative Portraits" are this format).
|
15/12/2005
I was out all day yesterday.
Today I drew two more GIRL IN A MEADOW pictures - this time with a vertical
portrait format (10x8 canvas board), in pencil and then in water soluble
oil.
I also started a third smaller work
(7x5 canvas board) - again in pencil followed by oil.
I wont be able to get into my studio
again until next week.
|
18/12/2005
I had little time to paint
this Sunday. I started painting in the GIRL IN A MEADOW (GIRL IN
A FLOWER MEADOW) paintings.
|
19/12/2005
I was unable to get into
my studio until 3pm. I then carried on painting in the three GIRL
IN A MEADOW paintings. I appear to be using three distinct colour schemes.
|
20/12/2005
A rather chilled-out sort
of day but I completed the main painting stage of YOUNG GIRL IN A MEADOW
1& 2 AND GIRL IN A FLOWER MEADOW. Some repainting may be needed
and I still have to add the symbols and other imagery.
No time to work tomorrow.
|
22/12/2005
Christmas shopping with
my wife (again)!. When I (finally!) got in, I redefined the lines
of the two YOUNG GIRL IN A MEADOW and GIRL IN A FLOWER MEADOW. I
tweaked some of the coloured areas and gave some consideration to the thematic
material - but didn't started to add the actual imagery.
|
23/12/2005
I added the imagery to
the small GIRL IN A FLOWER MEADOW and one of the (slightly larger) YOUNG
GIRL IN A MEADOW pictures - the latter will need the imagery painted in.
|
27/12/2005
I started the day by painting
in the images of the first YOUNG GIRL IN A MEADOW, I then did the
images of the second work, which I will have to fill in tomorrow.
I had worked out a set of images to use over the Christmas holiday, but
in the end invented a new series.
|
28/12/2005
I finished the second YOUNG
GIRL IN A MEADOW.
I then did the initial charcoal
lines of three very small works with the general working title of FLOWER
SPIRIT.
In the afternoon I returned to the
SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL paintings. I added some of the imagery to
the first work. I am hoping to complete the drawing stage of both
works tomorrow and then finish the works on Friday. I have plans
to clean my studio on New Years Eve - although I am not sure these will
come to fruition.
|
29/12/2005
Added symbols to the remaining
spaces in SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL ONE and all the available spaces
in SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL TWO (I have to add some background imagery to
the latter). These images have to be painted in, which I may try
and do tomorrow.
|
30/12/2005
I finished the charcoal
drawing stage of the three FLOWER SPIRIT works.
I have also completely finished
SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL ONE & SEARCHING FOR THE SOUL 2. I filled
in all the small images and added spontaeous marks to the background blocks.
This is probably the end of my creative
activity for 2005. Next year I plan to start work on my X paintings!
|
31/12/2005
I spent the whole day cleaning
my studio and library!
|
