Autumn
2002
01/10/2002
Reworked FIGURE ON A PEDESTAL,
CHILDHOOD LANDSCAPES and to a lesser extent RECLINING FIGURE.
Finished the first symbolic evocation
entitled MYSTERY PAINTING.
Slightly amended (FROM THE BRAIN
JUNGLE) THE MEETING OF MINDS.
|
02/10/2002
Finished the second symbolic
evocation entitled MYSTERY PAINTING 02.
Touched up the recently completed
LANDSCAPE ON REFLECTION. I am trying to increase the small areas
of interest in what is a relatively conventional painting,
|
07/10/2002
Touched up, again, FIGURE
ON A PEDESTAL.
Started a more expressionistic painting
entitled MYSTERIOUS LANDSCAPE, This is one of at least two.
Working from photos and initially using thin paint, thicker once
the Sansodor wash had dried - after a couple of hours. Using a mix
of blue and autumnal colours.
|
08/10/2002
Almost finished the painting
in new style entitled MYSTERIOUS LANDSCAPE. I am not that happy with
it as it is not compositionally unified, probably because I was undecided
in how to do the first marking out and initial painting in. I will
have to do another version at some point. There was a number of stylistic
options but I have fell between various stylistic stools.
Put in a wash for the other MYSTERIOUS
LANDSCAPE.
|
09/10/2002
Completely finished MYSTERIOUS
LANDSCAPE - INVESTIGATION TWO and also finished MYSTERIOUS LANDSCAPE -
INVESTIGATION ONE. I prefer tha latter but both are rather hurried
and there was not a complete committment to following ideas through.
I quite like the colours of INVESTIGATION ONE. Not that my palette
is that important in the context of these works.
|
10/10/2002
Working at art shop/gallery
today but I managed to get two canvases stretched and primed.
|
13/10/2002
Working on Sunday because
I am in art shop/gallery all of next week.
Did the drawing part of another
larger scale landscape entitled REFLECTED LANDSCAPE. This is based
on an earlier (and smaller) landscape.
|
14/10/2002
Re-worked my MYSTERIOUS
LANDSCAPE - INVESTIGATION TWO. I was not happy with the large areas
of brown and orange. The painting works a bit better now.
|
15/10/2002
Not much time but I did
a little painting of REFLECTED LANDSCAPE.
|
16/10/2002
Managed to get an hours
painting done. I am still working on REFLECTED LANDSCAPE.
|
20/10/2002
Recommenced the painting
in of REFLECTED LANDSCAPE. I am not yet sure how much detail/information
I will allow these works to contain. I may have to repaint some of
the areas done last week.
|
21/10/2002
I have now almost finished
REFLECTED LANDSCAPE. I am enjoying the colours of these works although
they do not have much in the way of content.
Started to prime panels for new
series of abstracted progression based land and life scapes.
|
22/10/2002
Little time again for painting
but I have finished REFLECTED LANDSCAPE.
I have done the drawing stage of
a very small work titled THE SMALL GARDEN.
I am starting two reduced landscapes:
one based around a series of blocks and the other condensed to simple interacting
linear structures.
|
23/10/2002
Very little time to paint
today. I have continued to work on two new landscapes entitled: LANDSCAPE
WITH THE VIEW REMOVED and THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS THE EARTH respectively.
I am trying to move away from the spontaneous gestural style of recent
landscapes using image blocks and linear structures - however neither work
is as originally conceived so more works will need to be done.
I have reworked MYSTERIOUS LANDSCAPE
- INVESTIGATION ONE. This is another series where further works will
be needed!
|
25/10/2002
I had a little time to
paint today and reinforced the preliminary lines of LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A
VIEW and THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS THE EARTH.
I framed MYSTERIOUS LANDSCAPE -
INVESTIGATION ONE. I am hanging the work tomorrow in the MA exhibition.N.
|
27/10/2002
Sunday: I spent some time
painting today and finished a small stretched canvas entitled THE SMALL
GARDEN. The canvas was a sample sent by a canvas supplier and I have
painted the sides in venetian red instead of framing.
|
28/10/2002
Working on the painting
stage of LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A VIEW and THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS
THE EARTH. I will have to do a new more expressionistic version of
the latter as it does not match my original conception.
|
29/10/2002
Finished painting the first
stage of LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A VIEW and THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS
THE EARTH.
Did the drawing stage of two new,
more condensed, landscapes. Both are based on Windmill Hill near
Tidworth. The first will be called UP WINDMILL HILL and thew other
OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY. They are gestural and spontaneous -
in terms of the actual drawing - and symbolise the landscapes of my childhood,
although in a less deliberate way than the earlier childhood series.
|
30/10/2002
Completed UP WINDMILL HILL.
I am not too happy with the predominant colours of the work. Also
completed OVER THE HILLS AND FAR AWAY. These paintings are in very
bright colours - particularly when compared to the landscape style of earlier
in the year.
|
31/10/2002
Worked during the evening
getting pictures ready for my forthcoming show at Newbury Corn Exchange.
|
01/11/2002
Spent another evening preparing
for my exhibition.
|
03/11/2002
I spent all of today finishing
off all the preparations for my exhibition at the Corn Exchange.
Unfortunately, I could not take three of the works I finished last week
as the paint had not dried.
|
04/11/2002
Hung an exhibition at the
Corn Exchange in Newbury. I did not take enough work so will have
to take more on Wednesday. Hung 37 pictures with the new meditative
landscapes predominant.
|
05/11/2002
I could only work in the
morning. Working again on LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A VIEW. I put in
the background sequence of spontaneous symbols. Loosely based on
growth shapes and patterns but also interacting and evolving on an abstract
level.
|
06/11/2002
I worked in the morning
on LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A VIEW again. In the afternoon I had to hang
an additional show in the Newbury Corn Exchange. I now have 50 paintings
on show.
|
10/11/2002
I managed to paint for
a little while today. I am continuing to work on LANDSCAPE WITHOUT
A VIEW and THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS THE EARTH. I have made
radical changes to the basic composition in both these works.
|
11/11/2002
Had to do extra hours in
art shop again! However I still managed to do several hours work.
I am still working on THE CHALLENGE WHERE THE SKY MEETS THE EARTH.
Although I am using spontaneous symbols this work (and it's pendant) marks
a return to more considered paintings. The symbols overlay simple
linear structures in a relatively expressionistic landscape.
|
12/11/2002
Had to do extra hours for
the second day in a row. However I have now completed THE CHALLENGE
WHERE THE SKY MEETS THE EARTH.
|
13/11/2002
Unexpectedly, I managed
to paint all day. I have finished LANDSCAPE WITHOUT A VIEW.
I have also started four small landscapes under the generic title of POSTCARDS.
These are small scale variations on "meditative" landscapes completed in
2001. Unfortunately they are not exactly 6x4 but they are conceived
as a series of deliberately small scale realisations.
|
17/11/2002
I spent some time painting
today. I have finished one of the "Postcards": POSTCARD FROM A JAPANESE
GARDEN. I am not sure if I have concentrated terribly well but some
of the colour combinations are a little unusual.
|
18/11/2002
Had to do extra hours in
art shop yet again!!! However I more or less finished another "Postcard"
called POSTCARD FROM A WILTSHIRE GARDEN. I am not sure if I concentrated
well enough again but some of the colours work OK.
|
19/11/2002
Yet more extra hours in
art shop/gallery. Reworked the first two "Postcards". I did
not have time do do anything else.
|
20/11/2002
Completed two "Postcards":
POSTCARD FROM THE GARDEN and POSTCARD FROM THE ARTIST'S WIFE. Slightly
retouched the two earlier works. I had to stretch the composition
of these works and the choice of colours may (or may not) have been a little
hurried.
|
21/11/2002
Primed a panel for my Nativity
commission. I have been inputting some of my smaller works into the
computer this week using a webcam.
|
22/11/2002
Took down the exhibition
at Newbury Corn Exchange.
In the morning I started working
on a 24"x30" NATIVITY SCENE for Andover Hospital.
|
24/11/2002
I spent much of today working
on the NATIVITY SCENE for Andover Hospital. I did the drawing roughly
in charcoal and then went over this with thinned oil paint.
|
25/11/2002
I had to work in the shop
today but managed to pick up the remainder of the works from Newbury Corn
Exchange in the evening.
|
26/11/2002
Started painting in the
NATIVITY SCENE. I am applying the paint very freely and as nomal
without any diluents etc.
|
27/11/2002
Carried on painting in
the NATIVITY SCENE. This work is compiled from images in other paintings.
It is a little bit hurried as I have a tight deadline.
|
01/12/2002
I worked for a large part
of the day on the NATIVITY SCENE. I painted in the animals and some
of the faces today.
|
02/12/2002
Finished the NATIVITY SCENE.
I would liked to have made some changes but it had to be completed in a
short time span.
I started a new work entitled ENCAPSULATED
LANDSCAPE and comprises of a structural sequence within which I have painted
condensed landscapes. More works in this idiom should follow.
|
03/12/2002
Completed the drawing stage
of a commission for a portrait of a horse. I enlarged the original
photograph on a colour copier. A rough outline was sketched in with
charcoal and then defined with thin oil paint.
I continued working on ENCAPSULATED
LANDSCAPE.
I also started priming some hardboard
panels for a series of new landscape sketches.
|
04/12/2002
I have completed
ENCAPSULATED LANDSCAPE. This is a small work, experimental in terms
of colour, which has not really worked although I will not rework it.
Finished priming some hardboard
panels to subsequently paint on. I prefer MDF but I needed to get
a large sheet of hardboard for another use.
I am reworking a tiger painting
I originally did some tine ago. I have added an abstracted and elaborated
head. I did the intitial drawing today and will paint in when this
has dried. Working title: TIGER ONE.
I have started to work again on
yet another version (in pencil on acrylic) of TRANSMUTATIONS.
|
08/12/2002
Although Sunday I did some
work today. I completed TIGER ONE. I also started the main
structural drawing of MECHANISTIC LANDSCAPE. This is basically a
structural sequence floated over a horizontal line and containing abstractions
of the natural world.
|
09/03/2003
Not a lot of time to work
today. I continued working on MECHANISTIC LANDSCAPE.
|
10/12/2002
Painting in a horse portrait
commission. I am not happy with the scale of the image so I may do
another.
Continuing to work on MECHANISTIC
LANDSCAPE. I have painted in the main areas and only have the small structures
to complete.
|
11/12/2002
I finished MECHANISTIC
LANDSCAPE and also HEAD OF A HORSE.
I did the drawing stage of a totally
invented landscape entitled JAPANESE GARDEN ON ANOTHER PLANET. I
roughed in with charcoal and then thinned paint with a round brush.
|
17/12/2002
This is the first day I
have been able to work for a little while. Unfortunately, progress
was slow today and it took me all day to do something which would normally
take half an hour!
I started the drawing stage of another
horse portrait. I also worked further on the drawing for JAPANESE
GARDEN ON ANOTHER PLANET.
|
19/12/2002
I had to fit painting around
having a tooth removed! Did the drawing stage of yet another Horse
Head. I wasn't happy with the scale of the image (again!) so I rubbed
it out and did it again.
I put a background into the other
head drawing. This other work has a more unusual composition.
I also did a little more work on
JAPANESE GARDEN ON ANOTHER PLANET. I placed the picture some way
away and refined the basic composition - A practice I rarely follow but
perhaps should do (it would, of course, be inappropriate for my more serious
sequential works).
|
23/12/2002
I am redoing my very early
Wing Works on a smaller scale. I had previously reworked 4 paintings,
although in these I reversed the canvas and repainted the picture to the
same scale. I was not happy with the end result - hence the new regime.
I did the drawing stage today of
WING: THE ROCK IDOL
|
24/12/2002
I am continuing with the
intitial series of Wing Works.
I did the drawing stage today of
WING: CHRIST ENTERING JERUSALEM.
|
27/12/2002
I have had flu over Christmas
and For the first time in years stayed in bed in the morning. However
I managed to get up in the afternoon and did most of the drawing stage
of another Wing Work entitled: WING: JUDAS IN THE GARDEN.
|
29/12/2002
Still suffering from the
flu.
However, I finished off the drawing
stage of WING: JUDAS IN THE GARDEN and also started
WING: PROVISIONAL PORTRAIT OF ANNE
BOLEYN.
|
30/12/2002
I finished the drawing
stage of WING: PROVISIONAL PORTRAIT OF ANNE BOLEYN. I also amended
the drawing of WING: JUDAS IN THE GARDEN and WING: CHRIST ENTERING JERUSALEM.
Rather than commence painting I
started the drawing of yet another Wing Work called WING: EVOCATIVE LANDSCAPE.loped
painting habits and it is sometimes difficult combining observed representation
with symbolic interpretation.
|
31/12/2002
I still have the flu.
I am still doing the drawing stages
of reworked Wing Works. I finished the initial stage of WING:
EVOCATIVE LANDSCAPE. I also completed the first stage of two other
works: WING: CHRIST UNDER A MICROSCOPE and WING: WALKING ON WATER.
I also made the preliminary laying
out of another work called : WING: PORTRAIT OF GARY, SHEENA & VIKKI.
These first marks were made with a cotton bud dipped in thinned paint.
