Summer
2002
01/07/2002
Not able to do much work
this week. Still working on "Chequered Sun".
|
02/07/2002
Continuing to work on "Chequered
Sun". Had to redo the entire bottom section.
|
08/07/2002
Not able to do much work
this week either. Still working on "Chequered Sun". I have
had to redo it again. I am using up my old water soluble oils and
I am not comfortable with the selection of paint I have left.
|
09/07/2002
Almost finished "Chequered
Sun". I have repainted a large area of it this time. I am still
not happy with the colour harmonies but I may not change it now.
|
10/07/2002
Managed to get a little
more work done today. Started work on another canvas - untitled landscape
at present. Preliminary lines in pencil and then reinforced with
acrylic.
|
15/07/2002
Started painting in my
new landscape on linen canvas. Experimenting with a lighter palette.
I should have put a thin acrylic glaze over lines but forgot. I will
have to redefine the lines in oil now.
|
16/07/2002
Finished new landscape
called "Childhood Landscapes". This is a semi-abstract landscape
with a bright palette.
|
17/07/2002
Finished "The Chequered
Sun". I have repainted this work several times and used a more painterly
technique. Also I have used a new mix of colours.
I have done the preparatory drawing
stage of two works: "Reclining Figure" and "Figure On A Pedestal".
These works are in a new fluent style and I am reasonably pleased so far
- especially with the Reclining Figure.
|
22/07/2002
Painting in "Figure On
A Pedestal". Still using mix of oil and water soluble oil.
Exploring subtle use of symbols in conventional picture.
|
23/07/2002
Continued painting in "Figure
On A Pedestal".
|
24/07/2002
Finished "Figure On A Pedestal".
Started painting in "Reclining Figure". I need to rework my paintings
more - be prepared to redo sections if necessary..
|
29/07/2002
Continued painting "Reclining
Figure".
Had to hang paintings at Hearn &
Scott Gallery
|
30/07/2002
Finished first layer of
painting in "Reclining Figure". The composition of this work is experimental
with flowing scribble like lines for the head of the figure and figurative
but expressively drawn body. The colours are not too subtle but hopefully
work reasonably well.
|
31/07/2002
Completed "Reclining Figure".
Redid parts of "Chequered Sun" and "Figure On A Pedestal". With the
latter, I was concerned that the amorphous flowers were not prominent enough.
Also, when I sketched them in I was deliberately spontaneous in terms of
entangled lines - I am wondering now if I should have been a bit more controlled.
I added fairly spontaneous symbols (based on supposed life forces) to the
grid in "Chequered Sun"..
|
05/08/2002
I will not be able to do
much work this week. Did a little work on "Metamorphoses In A Garden".
|
06/08/2002
Managed to do a little
work on "Transfiguration In The Garden".
|
12/08/2002
Another two hours of painting
this evening and further work on "Transfiguration In The Garden".
|
14/08/2002
Started a series of abbreviated
and elaborated landscapes. I did the initiating drawing about six
years ago. There will be three in the series plus a related painting.
Two will be abbreviations in different styles and one will be an elaboration
on one of the former.
|
15/08/2002
Continuing to work on new
landscapes. I used acrylic for the drawing of "Scenic Elaborations"
and Artisan water soluble oil for the drawing of "Scenic Abbreviations".
Started the inital drawing in of
two serious Meditative works utilising a similar structural format as my
earliest works done in the late Seventies/early Eighties.
|
16/08/2002
Working on two Scenic abbreviations
and one Scenic Elaboration - Plus an expressionistic landscape.
|
17/08/2002
Completed the drawing section
of "Scenic Elaboration" and the two "Scenic Abbreviations".
|
19/08/2002
Working on the painting
stage of "Scenic Elaboration". I have almost completed this today.
I am looking at working on a number
of different styles at the same time. I want to redo some early Wing
works, redo my "Symphonic Concerto - Romeo & Juliet", start a
series of Country Boy adventures and start a series of serious paintings/drawings
- taken up from where I left off in 1994. I also hope to do some
one offs which I have been thinking about for some time.
I have to prepare work for a solo
show at Hearn & Scott.
|
20/08/2002
Working on both versions
of "Scenic Abbreviations". I am exploring different colour schemes
and use of spontaneous symbols and other decorative marks.
|
21/08/2002
Completed both versions
of "Scenic Abbreviations". The original drawing on which these works
are based was done in the mid Nineties.
|
25/08/2002
Started another in the
new garden series "New Garden Two" - did the preliminary drawing stage
today.
Also did the preliminary drawing
of a painting entitled "Woman & Child". This returns to a compositional
preoccupation of the end of my first "Wing" period (1975-76) and combines
decorative elements with egg shape motifs. I am planning a large
series of Wingworks in a number of distinct styles as well as redoing original
paintings over the next 6-12 months.
|
26/08/2002
Redid part of "New Garden
One" - removing the tub like enclosures in the foreground and repainting
some of the vegetation.
Did two small paintings entitled
"Landscape Abbreiviation 1 & 2". these were based on a page of
quick sketches and the concept will be explored further at some point.
I also did the drawing stage of
a painting entitled "Linear Aphorisms". This was based on a drawing
done in 1995.
Also today I completed a fragment
of a large scale collage done originally in 1975. The work was cut
up and used as backing. I added new painted elements to the rescued
piece and called it "Early Recognition Of Circe Syndrome". The original
collage was 48"x24" and the fragment is 11"x14"!
|
27/08/2002
Finished "Linear Aphorisms".
Did the drawing stage of three small works entitled "Webern Realisations
1, 2 & 3". Started painting number 1 of these.
Repainted part of "Scenic Abbreviation
2". I lightened the venetian red at the front to balance/harmonise
the composition.
|
28/08/2002
I did not have much time
to paint today. I completed "Webern Realisation One - Short Stories".
|
02/09/2002
Hung a 35 work exhibition
at Hearn & Scott Gallery.
I did not have any time to paint.
|
03/09/2002
Finished "Small Talk -
Webern Realisation Two" and "Small Change - Webern Realisation Three".
The first in primaries and the second in mainly secondaries.
Started painting in "New Garden
Two".
|
04/09/2002
Did most of the painting
in on "New Garden Two". I am wondering if my precise forms look naive
to people coming across them for the first time. I am going to heavily
diversify anyway - both myself and my alter-ego Wing.
|
05/09/2002
Finished "New Garden Two"
and did most of the painting in of "Madonna & Child". The latter
I am quite pleased with - both stylistically and in terms of the colours
used. In many ways it is another new departure,
|
06/09/2002
I did not have time to
work today but managed to put finishing touches to "Madonna & Child".
|
09/09/2002
I have had very little
time to work today.
I have started the preliminary laying
out of two Odyssey type works with circuitous routes and events.
Also doing preminary work for two
spontaneous expressionistic landscapes called "Mysterious Landscapes".
I am planning some expressionistic
pseudo-abstracts as sketches for a projected series of large canvases.
|
11/09/2002
Started a series of quick
expressionistic pseudo-landscapes representing aspects and events of my
childhood. Did the preliminary drawing of 3 works today using thin
acrylic paint.
Preparing hardboard and MDF panels
to paint on using Liquitex acrylic gesso,
|
12/09/2002
I have done the preliminary
drawing (again in acrylic) of a fourth symbolic landscape and started painting
in the others. In one I washed in a layer of solvent diluted paint,
another I used heavily diluted water soluble paint and the other two I
used thinned acrylic.
|
13/09/2002
Finished symbolic landscape
entitled THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: WALKING TO WEXCOMBE.
I have almost completed another
entitled: THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: GOING UP TINKERBARN HILL.
I started painting in two others.
|
14/09/2002
I managed to finsh THE
ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: GOING UP TINKERBARN HILL before leaving for work.
|
15/09/2002
I finished another pesudo-abstract
landscape derived painting entitled: POND OR MAKE UP YOUR OWN TITLE.
|
16/09/2002
I wont have much time to
paint this week as I am doing extra hours in Shop/Gallery.
Started painting in another symbolic
landscape called: THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: IN THE BRUNTON GARDEN.
I am experimenting with colour a lot more again.
|
17/09/2002
I have managed to do a
few hours work and I have almost finished THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: IN THE
BRUNTON GARDEN.
I planning to copy some of the small
Meditative Landscapes I have completed during the last eighteen months
on a much larger scale.
|
18/09/2002
Still not able to do much
work. Finished THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD: IN THE BRUNTON GARDEN.
Started the preliminary drawing
of two new symbolic paintings.
|
23/09/2002
Completed the drawing stage
of the two symbolic paintings using oil paint thinned with Sansodor.
Did the drawing stage of a scaled
up Meditative Landscape using water thinned acrylic. I rushed it
at the end and I am a little disappointed with it.
|
24/09/2002
Completed most of the painting
of the enlarged version of Meditative Landscape. I rushed it a little
so I am still annoyed. I used a very similar palette to the original
version and the brushmarks are fairly free.
|
25/09/2002
Finished the large scale
Meditative Landscape entitled: LANDSCAPE ON REFLECTION.
Repainted part of THE ARTIST'S CHILDHOOD:
IN THE BRUNTON GARDEN as I was unhappy with the general layout of the painting.
I also repainted part of RECLINING
FIGURE as I was unhappy with the colour of the dress which did not harmonise
with the rest of painting.
I am trying to make myself use larger
brushes for the more expansive parts of the paintings.
|
27/09/2002
I managed to have a few
hours painting today. I started painting in one of the new symbolic
evocations.
Visited the Modern Artists Gallery
today. The director (Peggy Gibson) liked my work and has offered
to show some paintings. She also gave me a lot of advice re promoting
my paintings.
|
28/09/2002
Took down most of Hearn
& Scott Exhibition. A very successful show!
|
30/09/2002
Painted in the rest of
the background of one symbolic evocation and painted in most of another.
Finished taking down the Hearn &
Scott exhibition.
