No End of Season Doddle for Hoddle.
This was a game when it might have been expected that Southampton
would go all out for three points despite the fact that they
were already safe from relegation. Their recent form has not
been brilliant and Manager Glenn Hoddle has made it known that
he is not at all happy. In the opening minutes of the game it
looked as though we were in for a fight and after four minutes
Stuart Ripley beat Flowers with a shot deflected into the net
off Frank Sinclair. This stung City into action and Neill Moss
was kept busy with a succession of attacks by City which included
a fine save of a free kick by Matt Elliott and a close range
effort by Tony Cottee who made no mistake in the 22nd minute
when he took a pass from Elliott and beat the goalkeeper from
15 yards. Southampton fought hard to regain their
lead before half time but it was obvious that City were taking
control. In the second half, City continued to frustrate
Southampton's efforts to such an extent that their supporters
lost patience with their floundering team and resorted to boos
and derisory chants. This attitude of the supporters did them
no credit and they appear to have quickly forgotten the better
efforts of their team earlier in the season... Lady Luck was
certainly against Southampton when in the 60th minute a badly
taken clearance by the goalkeeper struck the legs of the advancing
Muzzy Izzett and rebounded gently over the line watched by the
helpless Neill Moss. From this point onwards, City were in control
and the only notable incident took place when Dean Richards received
a red card in injury time for a foul on Robbie Savage. City showed
the geater dedication and deserved the three points.
