Villa - League Cup Semi Final Preview
Peter Gilbert 23.1.99
A good result in the first leg of this
two legged affair away at The Villa will see us in a great position
to cruise into a Wembley final against either Bolton or Tranmere.
On the other hand, a really bad result would see us with a nigh
on impossible task against the brummies.
We should have some of our 'grown ups' back in the squad after
they were rested for the last league match, so if you add Guppy,
Izzett, Taggart,Walsh, Cottee, Flowers,Oakes and Savage, and
perhaps Lennon to our already admirable resources; then you have
to be confident that we can come away with something like a half
decent result.
Forget the fluky way Villa qualified for the latter stages, they
are the opposition and they have to be disposed of over two legs.
We are fortunate to have the away leg first then we can bring
them back to Filbert Street for a penalty shoot out.
We have had our injuries but we could get back on song at just
the right time as the most crucial part of the season begins
to unfold. So far it has only been poor play, now it's the real
thing.
So come on you blue boys sort 'em out. Not too long ago we would
not have been at all confident in this fixture, but such is the
improvement we have made that we now feel positively brimming
with confidence. The fact that they have so many of our 'old'
resources now doesn't worry us, we have replaced them with better
products.
ps Have you heard the rumour about Stan Collymore coming to Leicester
on a free transfer?
Did You Know?
1. Villa have won the League Cup five times, a joint record shared

and 1996.
2. Their 1961 League Cup win made them the first English Club
to have won all three major domestic trophies.
