Boring Boring Leicester
Peter Gilbert. 11.3.00
So it's time to pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and start
all over again. Football is an emotional thing as much as anything
and in a way this game was exactly the type of thing we didn't
want. There was as ever about as much atmosphere at Selhurst
Park as there is on the moon, just when we needed an inferno
to wind us all up after the traumas off the pitch last week.
We fielded a side which on paper looked OK but which in reality
was always going to struggle to ignite the fire that we always
rely on..
The first half was dire which Wimbledon won by virtue of a penalty
taken by Ardley after Cort had been upended in the box.
At the back we were tentative, in midfield lacking conviction
and up front we had two strikers in Collymore and Cottee who
both prefer to play off someone rather than being the 'dogs body'
themselves.
The spectacle or lack of it was not aided by the condition of
the pitch which caused the ball to bobble about all over the
place.
The second half was terrible which was an improvement by some
considerable margin and when Collymore flicked on a Guppy corner
it disappeared into a sea of legs and Gerry Taggert stuck out
a boot to force the ball over the line and draw us level.
City then went into 'let's hold onto a point' mode but a couple
of Wimbledon substitutions fired our opponents up and they rallied
to the cause.
Their bugle over the PA heralded yet another Wimbledon corner
which was flicked on to Cort to lash the ball home convincingly
with only a couple of minutes to play.
Why we don't play the same game with The Post Horn Gallop I don't
know.
When Cottee was replaced by Marshall with 10 mins. to go it was
a symbolic and yet futile gesture which summed up our predicament
and we looked very ordinary indeed.
Our lacklustre performance deserved nothing more than what we
got really although a point would have been very nice.
We are obviously going to need a little time to adjust to our
loss and sign a striker in the remaining two weeks before the
transfer deadline.
PS: Last word on Emile Heskey.
'Emile when you go shopping up there with the 'Spice Boys' be
very careful what you buy. Most of the stuff on offer in Liverpool
is nicked, oh and by the way RED DOESN'T SUIT YOU !!!!!!
