Stanley Settles In

Peter Gilbert. 12.2.00

I just wanted to see what Stan Collymore looked like in a Leicester City shirt, and at the end of the game I thought he looked pretty good actually, I think the Royal Blue rather suited him.   In the past I have to say I have never enjoyed watching Stanley Victor play football because he used to fill me with fear and trepidation.   I will never forget him picking up the ball away at F****t in our half and running straight at our defence to score a spectacular goal.   I think I'm right in saying that was the only goal he has ever scored against us, it was a great goal so we'll have to forgive him even if he was playing for the 'unmentionables.'
He played the full 90 mins of this game and at the end he appeared triumphant, smiling, and with a clenched fist too. He should have felt good ,he played well and his two efforts on goal; both headers could have gone in, one hit the bar and the other was well saved.

It was always going to be a difficult game this one, but it was a run out which will probably be good practice for what we are likely to encounter at Wembley in two weeks' time.

We went in at half time in the lead thanks to a 'scrappy' goal from Matt Elliott who would rather score as a centre half than a centre forward. Just as long as he scores though we are happy, he's having a great season.

We needed cheering up, it was bitterly cold at Vicarage Road which appeared to be totally lacking any real atmosphere. Watford played with fear and it has to be said we didn't exactly flow ,  but our excuse was that we are soon to be preparing for a game at Wembley which is a nice thought. The City lads are going away to Spain to 'get themselves together' and hopefully to further add to our famed team spirit but we are more than that for anyone who wants to know, or criticise us.

Shortly after half time Watford equalised but at the end we settled for the one point when we could have had three. Our strike force consisted of Collymore, Cottee and Heskey, not a bad line up and one which has a bit of everything;power, guile and speed are difficult things to defend against. The arrival of Collymore gave licence for Heskey to adopt a variety of strategies during the course of the game.

We were of course still missing vital players who were 'rested' in case they picked up a booking which would rule them out for Wembley. Guppy, Savage, Lennon, Izzett and Sinclair were all absent and so if we can get then fit we should have a good run in for the rest of the season.
