Fuel Needed for Essential Services
Leicester City 1 Red Star Belgrade 1
Peter Gilbert 14.9.00
I nearly got some fuel at Leicester Forest East, but was turned
away at the last moment.
It had been an enjoyable drive down the M1 and our opposition
tonight sounded more like a type of fuel themselves.
'Fill her up pal with Red Star.'
'Belgrade sir.'
'Yes please.'
It was a night of near misses.
As the players warmed up I was surprised by how many away fans
were there, some holding up a Bradford banner and others a Scottish
flag, but I suppose there are many Serbs living in our country.
They were a very unfriendly bunch and hissed like a thousand
vipers as our players jogged towards them minus Tim Flowers.
We had The Post Horn Gallop played live and Birch gave us a stirring
speech, we were well and truly up for it.
Another surprise though, the Red Star fans had bright red flares
which filled the kop end goal mouth with a November fog which
hadn't properly cleared some 45 seconds into the game when Tim
Flowers found himself searching the back of the net for the ball.
There were no protests or excuses from the City players. The
35 yard dipping shot from someone with Vic at the end of his
name was a corker and took everyone by surprise.
So the uphill ordeal became a mountain to climb but inspired
in the main part by the Herculean efforts of Robbie Savage and
Darren Eadie, City began their methodical move forward.
Savage was everywhere tackling, passing, covering and getting
forward in the twinkling of an eye. Eadie shot forward like an
arrow and reduced the Red Star defenders to some fairly agricultural
methods of stopping him.
City were wounded but the fire in their bellies was rewarded
