Not Only But Also

Leicester City 1 Everton 1
Akinbiyi Unsworth

Not only did Leicester City fail to grab the opportunity to go
2 points clear in The Premiership but also they allowed an inferior
side to dominate the first 30 mins. of the second half after
totally outplaying them in the first half and battering them
for the last 10 mins of the game.
Walking to the ground by the river as I always do my head was
swimming with the gluttonous feast of sport I had devoured over
the weekend. The Olympics with the emotional gold medals from
the rowing of the women rowers our 8's and the coxless 4 with
Stephen Redgrave wining an unsurpassed 5th consecutive gold medal.
Then there was Denise Lewis cruising her way to a Gold Medal
in the Heptathalon ; quite magnificent on top of the other achievements.
As for the football, Chelsea held Man Utd. to a draw and the
stage was set for us to climb onto the podium and take the applause.
I stared at the river and pondered our possibilities, could we
do it?
It was a wet pitch and the ball skidded around like a bar of
soap from the first minute to the last but Robbie Savage for
one was determined to get hold of the ball and his territory
and stake his claim to rightful possession..
After only 4 mins. Akinbiyi had a clear header at goal which
he didn't direct well and Gerard one of two English 'keepers
on display (how often can you say that?) smothered it right on
the line.
The rain poured down relentlessly, seldom have I seen Filbert
Street look so soggy, and Leicester passed the ball about with
great confidence and purpose.
Jeffers threatened for Everton in short bursts whereas Leicester
applied lengthy spells of dominance.
On 17 mins. Leicester strung a series of passes together which
I lost count of but was something in the late teens before Lennon
chopped the ball low and hard into the box; Akinbiyi met it crisply
and it flew into the back of the net for a deserved lead.
We continued to dominate and a good effort followed from Eadie
who's shot was punched away. Good work in midfield from Savage
put Akinbiyi away but the ref. Stopped play to book Watson for
a late challenge on Savage when Akinbiyi was bearing down on
goal. Come on ref!!!!!!!
Nyarko was upended clumsily by Rowett but the ref waved play
on.
Late on Flowers was forced into making a good save from Jeffers
again who was relishing the squidgy conditions.
At half time we were top of the league but right from the start
in the second half Everton looked determined and we lost our
way, our passing game was torn to shreds under pressure and Gazza
began to play like a demon and he strutted around like a prize
cockerel. Good work from him in the box swayed our defences this
way and that and his following chip shot was parried away by
Flowers. The ball fell kindly for Unsworth who deposited the
ball into the net with his left foot.
Suddenly we were on the ropes and went through 20 mins of what
was the opposite of a purple patch. Great saves from Flowers
kept us in the game as Everton were spurred on by tenacity and
self belief. Gilchrist, Cresswell and Collymore all came on to
beef up our efforts.
With 10 mins to go we picked ourselves up off the floor and began
to play our old blood and guts game which was needed in the circumstances.
Gone was our shape , self control and surgical passing and we
battered away at the Toffees.
Cresswell had a header kicked off the line by Alexanderson and
Collymore hit the bar with a looping header. We had a succession
of corners had a penalty appeal turned down when Cresswell was
clearly tripped.
Somehow though this game was a step too far, it was beyond us
to go top of the league.
We now need to stiffen our resolve realize that we still haven't
lost and go again for our moment of glory.
We are surely just a class striker away from a genuine top 5
team; either that or I'm a penny or two short of a shilling.
Player Performance
Flowers: A great afternoon, unlucky with the goal.
Rowett: A good player who continues to improve.
Elliott: Very. Very good. He moves well with the ball and sets
up attacks from defence.
Taggart: Hands full with Jeffers, caught in possession
a couple of times.
Impey: Badly missed when he went off.
Guppy: Good crosses in 1st half, faded in the 2nd.
Lennon: Good ball winning, he's nearly back to his best.
Izzett: Struggled to contain Gazza.
Savage: Booked, yet again for something or nothing, a
great game again.
Akinbiyi: Took his goal well, should have had another.
I'm not convinced.
Eadie A little too quiet for me.
Subs:
Collymore: Came on for Eadie, looked sleepy, tangled unnecessarily
with Gazza..
Cresswell: Came on for Akinbiyi, header cleared off the
line, was more involved, worth a start.
Gilchrist: Their attack fizzled out when he came on.
I'd like to see us going in for a couple of top quality players
while we're up at the top. I fear we're a good team that has
an identifiable problem scoring goals.
