10.Things to know about Red Star Belgrade

1. Founded 1943 during WW2.
2. Stadium Capacity (not that we'll ever see it) 54,000.
3. They have been Yugoslav Champions no less than 21 times.
4. They have been Yugoslav cup winners 18 times.
5. They've won the double 7 times.
6. Champions League winners twice.
7. Their President is called Dragan Djajic., and their manager is Slovoljuib Muslin.
8. They ended up in the EUFA Cup only after being eliminated from Champs. League on away goals.
9. They won the league and cup double last season and are top of the league this season so far.
10. We are indeed honoured to be playing them and we will be quite pleased if we beat them in either leg.

Below is an extract from an EM I have received from Belgrade……..I have left out some of the - shall we say, more volatile parts and believe me they really did exist so I for one am very pleased we aren't playing in Belgrade at this or any other time.
The only problem now though is who will host the match?

Hi,
I am not surprised of dirty politics of L.C.F.C.'s management. I know you are afraid of the former Eurochamp.
Yugoslav league started 4 weeks ago, and we are first with all 12 points. We beat "Sutjeska" on Saturday (scored 3:1), with one missed penalty.
The second half we played without our best players, 'cause we are keeping them for match vs. Leicester. All informations you can find on Red Star official page.

So there we have it……. A friendly chappie but quite knowledgeable……..he's right about one thing though……..we do fear them……or is it respect?
Wait a moment; we are also top of the league but also, after 5 games and with 11 points, neck and neck with Man Utd.

Reasons to be Cheerful

1. Tony says he's sorted the petrol problem out.
2. Their fans won't be visiting us in an 'official' capacity.
3. We certainly won't be visiting them.
4. We were seeded in 40th place while they were back in 60th.
5. Military action against them has ceased and we are now in a position to 'build bridges.'
6. We're pretty good too, let's be confident.
7. It will be an exciting occasion, and a great opportunity to 'test' ourselves.
8. Their shirts look like Sunderland or Stoke, so when we play them we just need to think ………..Sunderland or Stoke …………..and then we'll win.
9. We can go to the away leg on Sept. 28th.
10. Tony; are you sure you've sorted the petrol out?

Seldom (if ever) has an English football team played against another team so shortly after we've been in a state of war with them.

On a serious Note
I'd like to finish by saying in all sincerity that this football match is an occasion when sport can overcome political feuding and I hope that our involvement with Red Star Belgrade can do something to heal the inevitable wounds that exist after two countries have been in conflict. If we meet up with Red Star Fans we should put our differences to one side and enjoy the occasion for what it is……….a football match.
