No Pain No Gain

Peter Gilbert 19.1.99
After this match as I was driving back with my legs still trembling with the drama I had just witnessed I heard Arsene Wenger interviewed on the radio. He was clearly a broken man, he seemed to think that Leicester actually wanted a penalty shoot out at the end of two games plus extra time. Surely we would have been the last team to have wanted such a thing having survived thus far. He also saw only one shot on goal from Leicester all night which came from Eadie in the first 10 mins.He obviously didn't see the two shots from Emile that had England's ex number 1 David Seaman scrabbling about in desperation. On the occasions when I saw the French manager he had his head in his hands, which is obvioulsy why he missed all the action.
I'll tell you something though I would think the sales on the cosmetics counter in Boots have taken a rapid decline in takings on nail varnish sales over the last few weeks in the Leicester area, we virtually have no nails left having chewed them down to the bone during our frenetic cup encounters.
You see Monsieur Wenger, the trouble with your team is this: No Pain No Gain. They seem to think that sweat is beneath them, they want to look classy. Actually Arsenal play snobs football, they just can't hack it with the 'working classes'.That too is how their manager comes across, snobbish, stuck up and now he will have to tell his players to lose their dignity and start competing rather like Leicester City. I should imagine they feel that they have learned something from tonight, if not they will pay the price eventually. They only have the league competition left now.
There are interesting little facts to address after this victory like for example, we have never before beaten Arsenal in an FA Cup tie and Alan Birchenall was in fact the last Leicester player to score a goal past them in this competition and that was in the 70's when Birch. was past his best.
Leicester City mesmorised Arsenal - they met a brick wall when they attacked us and they met a moving brick wall in the shape of Emile Heskey when we attacked them, it was ding dong ping pong but it took Arsenal 65 mins. to win a corner so they can't have been that superior.
Tim Flowers made a string of fine saves in the second half from Vierra, Suker and Keown and on the one occasion when he was beaten Robbie Savage popped up on the line to head the ball away. Robbie and Tim looked at each other and just laughed and it was at that moment that I sensed another victory.
We had them, they were there for the taking.
Inevitably we went into extra time; Matt Elliott went up front with Emile, Gunnlauggson went to left back and Savage went to centre back. Guppy and Eadie went off and were replaced by Campbell and Fenton who both operated in midfield.
Elliott and Heskey played a lovely one two which finished with Emile powering in a left foot shot which was well saved by England's no.3, such a pity his manager didn't see it. Taggart had a good header blocked and went down injured.
In the second period of extra time Tim Flowers went off and Peguy Arphexad came on, his first touch of the ball was when he shot like a bullet out at Henry to dispossess him cleanly in the box.
Arsenal were now becoming desperate playing hit and hope football or 'it an op' as Wenger probably explains it on the training gound.
And so we went to penalties. Now I would like Monsieur Wenger to understand that penalty shoot outs are rather like Russian Roulette - the more you play the game the more likely you are to blow your brains out so why we would want to play it again I can't think. You don't think - no surely not - he's not a bad loser is he?
