Fitting Blue Dash LED's
and Heater Control Illumination

New Bulb------------------Old Bulb

I really wanted to change the white dash bulbs to blue LED's but could not find any of the right bulb holders that had removable bulbs. They were all soldered type holders and the holders on the market that had removable bulbs would not fit.

So I purchased some Blue 12v LED's from ebay (bulb 286) and 'modded' the original holders to make them work.

First remove the bulb from the holder by pushing in the retaining tags on either side of the bulb holder

Snip the bulb wires flush with the metal contact tags

Then bend the wires on the new LED's to 45 degrees and place into the original holder so they protrude through the slots in the side.

Using a screwdriver bend the wires to 90 degrees then push back in the two metal contact tags

With the screwdriver bend the wires over the metal contact tags so they make a good solid contact as below image

Finally plop a bit of solder on the wires for good measure and there you go you should now have working blue LED bulbs.

Also the heater controls never illuminated. I found the bulb holder behind the heater control panel was knackered so I ordered a new one from VW for £1.20, part number 321-919-039. Now the heater controls illuminate at the same time as the dash

GOOD LUCK!
