IRISH SETTERS

My thanks to the Committee for this invitation to judge Irish Setters.  Thank you also to my very capable steward who did a sterling job single handedly. Nearly all dogs on the day were presented in tip top order but sadly in some cases although the furnishings looked good to the naked eye, actual condition on some of the exhibits was not good, with poor musculature throughout.  This is one area were I am always concerned as it shows not only in the dogs movement but also in the lifestyle the dogs lead.  I hate to think of a dog not getting out for walks and free runs.  My winners all pleased me immensely and their presentation and condition was without question. Thank you to everyone for bringing your dogs; it was an honour to judge them.

DOGS

MPD No Entries.  PD(8,1) 1.Coggles KIRKAVAGH TEENOSO OF KATACH This dog really appealed to me.  A most handsome boy with such a lovely head.  Good eyeshape and colour, correct chiselling throughout with good stop and nicely raised brows. Most lovely soft expression and good finish to his foreface.  Nice straight front with good angulation to his front assembly. A lovely balance throughout and good depth of brisket with strong well angulated hindquarters. Lovely flow to his topline finished into correctly angulated croup.  This boy moved steady and true with correct footfalls. Good luck with him.  2.Perrins DANAWAY BYRON  Another most handsome boy.  Most pleasing of heads with again that correct eye shape and colour, good chiselling throughout and good stop and raised brows.  Lovely planes to his head and good finish to foreface.  Lovely soft expression.  He is deep chested with good spring of rib and well ribbed back.  Straight true front with good bone and neat tight feet.  Pleasing topline.  Good bend of stifle, well muscled. 1 just had the edge on second thigh development at this point.  Moved well.  3. Richardsons KIRKAVAGH THE MINSTREL.  JD (8,2) I liked both these boys a lot. 1.Willis’s JACWILINS WILLOUGHBY  A sound, well made youngster of medium size who was presented in top condition.  He is balanced and racy and is very well made. He has the most pleasing of heads with good eye shape and colour and a lovely expression. Ear set and carriage correct.  Straight true front with strong, quality bone and neat feet.  Good angulation fore and aft with deep chest and good spring of rib and well ribbed back.  Strong through the loin. Such a sound moving dog with lovely front extension and driving off short, strong rear pasterns. I’m sure a bright future awaits. 2. Prangle’s HEATHCLARE A CHANCE OF MAGIC. In profile this boy has it all. Balanced and racy, with strong, wide rear quarters and excellent width to second thigh .His front assembly is also good.  Very deep chested , well ribbed back with excellent spring of rib.  Correct topline and tailset Good bone and lovely neat tight feet.  His head is pleasing with good stop and well raised brows.  Good finish to foreface  and correct planes to his head.  Just preferred the front extension of 1. 3.Carrs JACWILINS MR PALMER  YD(7,1) 1. Stubbs’ LITTLEPEA LORD BARNABUS   GD(10,0) Such a lovely class. 1 & 2 were litter mates, both of which I love for type and style 1. Roffeys DANAWAY LANCELOT. I have been admiring this dog for quite some time and it was a pleasure to go over him.  This boy just oozes quality and is certainly a star in the making.  He flows from the tip of his nose to  the end of his tail.  There is total balance, teemed with quality and raciness throughout. He has the most gorgeous head and such a melting expression. Correct eye colour , shape and pigmentation. Good ear set, length and carriage  Good stop, with raised brows and correct amount of work throughout his head.   Equally balanced planes to his head and correct amount of finish to foreface.  His lovely arched neck just flows into his front assembly which is straight, true and well angulated.  Deep chested,  well ribbed back into strong loin and good hindquarters.  Moved with purpose and I loved his front extension just reaching out for the ground in front, coupled with his strong rear driving movement – all effortless and free flowing. Presented and handled to perfection. Thank you for bringing him.  2. Willis’ DANAWAY THE LIONHEART Another from the top drawer.  Also put down in wonderful condition with good musculature throughout.  Most pleasing of head pieces with correct eye, stop and raised brow.  Lovely planes to his head and good amount of work throughout.  Strong well arched neck, flowing into a strong well angulated front assembly.  Straight correct front with good quality bone and neat tight feet.  Deep chested  with good spring of rib and well ribbed back to his strong loin.  Good bend of stifle and strong through first and second thighs. Good topline and tailset.  He too moved with drive and purpose. A pleasure to judge him. 3. Barker-Bells BALINTYNE CHANCES ARE Another top quality exhibit in this class of a different style.  I liked him a lot.  Lovely head piece and most appealing expression.  Strong well made young man who is just slightly less mature than 1 & 2 in this class but I think he will certainly mature into a very appealing Irish Setter.  Deep chested.  Lovely outline with good topline and tailset.  Good bone.  Strong wide hindquarters and good width to first and second thighs. Good angulations fore and aft and nicely balanced throughout.  PGD(19,2) 1. Barker-Bells BALINTYNE TAKE A CHANCE ON ME This dog won this class on his strong sound movement.  Powerful and true with correct footfalls. A very honest dog who is very well balanced.  I really liked his head.  Correct chiselling throughout, good eye shape, colour and pigmentation.  Correct finish to foreface and good stop and raised brows. Correct  ear set, length and carriage.  Clean through the neck into his shoulder with its good angulation.  Deep chested with good depth and length of ribcage.  Strong wide powerful hindquarters and good musculature through his first and second thigh.  Put down in lovely condition, well handled.  2. Framptons THE PEARLFISHER OF STRATHMEAD.  One I have done well for before and whom I still greatly admire.  He is of the type and style I like. Correct planes to head, good eye colour .  Correct chiselling throughout.  Good ear set, length and carriage.  Nice finish to foreface.  Lovely in outline  with good body properties throughout.  Nicely balanced and put down in lovely condition.  Straight front with good quality bone and neat tight feet.  Good angulations fore and aft and deep strong ribcage leading into strong loin.  Strong wide hindquarters, good bend of stifle.  Presented and handled well. 3.Lawrences SAMETSUZ UP TO MISCHIEF  LD(10,0) 1. & CC & BOB Willetts CASPIANS DISRAELI  Today this boy totally filled my eye. He is now starting to look like the finished article.  Beautifully presented and today carrying just the correct amount of weight.  He has the most lovely head with such a soft expression.  Dark eyes of the correct unshelled almond like shape with good pigmentation.  Correct amount of stop and lovely raised brows. Nicely balanced throughout, with correct amount of work in head and good finish to muzzle.  Well placed ears of correct length.  Lovely outline with good topline and tailset. Straight front with good angulation and good return of upper arm.  Deep chested, with nice depth and length to ribcage.  Strong through the loin.  Good musculature throughout.  Good development behind now.  The picture he presents is one of balance and beauty.  Not one who is easy to handle but when he gets it right he really does demand that ‘second look’.  I was delighted to award him his first CC and BOB. 2.Harrisons CASKEYS VOYAGER.  I found this boy to be so very appealing and he is certainly of top quality.  Have only seen him once before and I was pleased to be able to judge him. Had all round appeal for me and is such an honest dog with no exaggeration; exactly as the standard asks for. He was one of my favourite male dogs of the day.  He has the most beautiful headpiece with correct, balanced planes and good stop and raised brows.  Correct eye colour, shape and pigmentation.  Lovely finish to his muzzle.  Nicely arched neck leading into good front assembly, good ribcage and strong through the loin.  Good rear end assembly, with good bend of stifle and short strong rear pasterns.  Moved very soundly.  3. Frys STRATHMEAD APRIL IN PARIS A boy whom I have always liked.  Well constructed throughout, with very pleasing head and in full coat. Not quite the condition of the winners today.  OD(7,1) 1.& RCC Holleys SH CH DANAWAY DISCREET JW.  Just starting to come into his prime and looking quite stunning today.  Put down in wonderful coat and condition and presented impeccably. I love his elegance and raciness and his overall style. Good eye colour, stop and raised brow.  Good earset , length and carriage.  Beautiful outline, with good topline and tailset and balanced angulations front and rear. Deep well sprung ribs, well ribbed back and strong through the loin.  Good length of neck leading into good front assembly and straight true front. Strong hindquarters with excellent first and second thighs. A very worthy champion whom I greatly admire. 2. Smiths REDDINS TILLERMAN Untitled today although I believe he is a  Show Champion and quite deservedly. Lovely outline with balance and substance and still having raciness. Good topline and tailset, strong powerful hindquarters and balanced angulation in front.  Quality bone with neat tight feet.  Deep chested, well sprung ribs of good length through to strong loin area.  Excels through his hindquarters and is very sound on the move.  I found him to have the most delightful headpiece.  He was one of the few with that lovely soft melting expression. I like him very much. 3. Baileys COVARNEY MONELLO

BITCHES

MPB(3,0) 1. Smiths REDDINS HOLLY Another from this kennel with such a sweet head.  Correct planes, good balance and lovely finish to foreface teemed with good eye shape and colour, good stop and nicely raised brows. Nice tidy feet, moved well for one so young.  Good body properties and already well developed through her rear quarters.  2. Risdons REDDINS ESCENCE OF REDSLEEVES Litter sister to 1 and not quite so mature.  Presented well with rich dark coat.  Again pleasing in head and good neck into shoulder.  Deep chested.  Moved happily.   3. Lemons REDDINS HAYLEY  PB(10,2) 1 & BPIB & PG2. Holleys DANAWAY BRIANA OF WYNJILL  Just loved her.  Quite striking in outline and such a confident little mover.  Having watched her in the Puppy Group Competition I feel she has a very bright future – already that style and panache in the big ring that is so desirable and sadly so hard to find. Best wishes with her.  She is already very nicely balanced and has all the essentials.  Good topline and tailset, deep chested and nicely ribbed.  Good shoulder and upper arm  and strong hindquarters.  Delightful in head, with lovely soft expression.  Correct eye colour, shape and pigmentation. Lovely raised brows and correct amount of chiselling. Good finish to muzzle.  Good ear set, length and carriage. Quality bone and neat tight feet. Lovely rich coat in wonderful condition completed the picture.  2.  Gardners Carnbargus Contemplation.  On initial assessment of this class I thought she would be my winner.  Also top class with surely a bright future too.  However in true Irish character she had that devil may care attitude and on this occasion had to be content with second place.  Back to the naughty school I think!! Balanced throughout and altogether very well put together.  Lovely head piece with good eye shape, colour and pigmentation.  Lovely planes to head and good finish through foreface.  Clean, well arched neck leading into good front assembly.  Already deep chested and is well ribbed back.  Strong,  wide hindquarters and with a lovely finish to her pelvic area.  When she gets her act together she does have a lovely clean outline and good tailset.  Moved well. 3. Naylor & Morrisons BARDONHILL SINGING SKIES OVER ANLORY  JB(15,1) Mortimer & Condrons COVARNEY COCO Racy in outline, presented very well and indeed handled well.  Her more racy outline won her this class over 2.  Nicely balanced throughout with good bone and  substance.  Pleasing in head with correct eye requirements, stop and raised brows.  Good amount of work through her head and lovely finish to her muzzle.  Clean in outline with good topline and tailset and strong wide hindquarters.   Good amount of bone.  2. Willis ’JACWILINS MS DASHWOOD. Every dog presented to me from this kennel was in top condition from weight right through to coat condition, musculature and demeanour and this girl was no exception.  The soundest mover in the class.  Slightly bigger than I prefer but she is so very well balanced and wellmade.  Pleasing in head with soft expression and all the requisite eye characteristics.  Lovely planes to her head and nice finish to her foreface.  Strong, well arched neck leading into correct front assembly.  Very deep strong ribcage, well sprung and well ribbed back.  Strong,  wide hindquarters which she used to advantage on the move.  3. Lewis’ HEATHCLARE DESIRES MAGIC AT DOTCOMSETTER  YB(8,1) 1 Powis’ AMBERWAVE BLUSH  Slightly bigger than I usually prefer however such an honest bitch.  Moved soundly and was clean in outline with no exaggeration.  Pleasant head with good eye colour and raised brow.  Good ear set, length and carriage.  Clean through neck into well angulated shoulder.  Good topline and tailset.  Deep chested, well ribbed back and strong through the loin area. Moved with precision and purpose.  2. Thwaites WILLOWGLOWS RED PAGEANT Lovely head, correct throughout with all the essentials.  My notes say nicely put together when relaxed and needs more schooling.  Hope this is of help to you.   I found this girl to be quite lovely but she  is not quite sure what its all about yet.  A good quality bitch throughout, moved ok and was well presented.  3.Russells MELMARA RUBY TUESDAY  NB(15,0) 1. Willis’ JACWILINS Ms.  Dashwood   2.  Holleys DANAWAY BRIANA OF WYNJILL 3. Gardners CARNBARGUS CONTEMPLATION   UGB(14,2)  1. Bartholomews  KIRKAVAGH POLONIA WITH BARTHOLEYS Liked the style of this bitch. Pleasing in head, good stop and raised brows.  Good eye colour.   Good ear set, length and carriage.  Good bone, neat feet.   Deep chested, well ribbed back, strong through the loin leading into her strong hindquarters.  Good first and second thigh.  Handled sympathetically.  2. Drinkwaters BRABOOK BABOUSKA.  I like this bitch so much for her soundness and free flowing easy gate.  Today she lost out on lack of coat, which makes her look even more immature.  Pleasing in head, good bone, neat feet.  Balance throughout with no exaggeration.  Of a size I like.  Good angulation fore and aft.  She is quite an unassuming bitch but she is a pleasure to watch on the move.  Just needs her coat to enable her to trouble her classmates more.  3. Prices SEVERNVALE SHEER HEAVEN  GB(7,1)  1 Naylor & Morrisons ANLORY CEREZA JW Have done her well as a junior and see no reason to change my mind about her.  Another who won the class on her lovely movement.  The best mover of the class with her lovely front extension and driving off short, strong rear pasterns and strong hock joints.  Pleasing head with all the essentials.  Deep chested, well ribbed and strong through the rear assembly.  Excellent first and second thighs.  Good angulation in front.  Maturing nicely.  2. Warners STRATHMEAD SNOW BUNTING JW  A favourite of mine to whom I have given Best Puppy before. Loved her head and the overall style of this bitch.  Presented well.  Good topline and tailset, good angulation fore and aft.  Good bone and feet.  Deep chested, with correct ribbing through to strong loin area and excellent first and second thigh development.  Just lost out on movement to 1 who was in top form today.  3. Prices SEVERNVALE SEVENTH HEAVEN  PGB(16,2) 1. Prangles TANNYMAC COULD IT BE MAGIC Presented in excellent condition, with great depth of quality through her coat.  Another who excelled on the move.  Pleasing head with all the requirements. Clean neck and shoulder, straight true front.  Good bone, neat feet.  Deep chested, well ribbed back.  Good musculature throughout. Still needs that little extra maturity to complete the picture.  2. Gurneys DANAWAY ISADORA.  Unfortunate to meet winner in such good bloom, as I really liked her.   Lovely head piece,  with its correct eye shape, colour and pigmentation, correct stop and raised brow.  Good  length of neck and good topline and tailset. Balanced throughout and good through hindquarters.  Correct finish to croup.  She is a very honest bitch who is without exaggeration, exactly as an Irish Setter should be. Moved well.  3. Watts  SHENANAGIN SHOOTING STAR

LB(16,5) Such a lovely class of quality ladies – thank you all for the opportunity of examining them. Judging I believe is always a compromise; delighting in a dogs virtues and giving due consideration to its faults.  To fault judge is easy -  but to truly thrill in a beauty is such a pleasure. 1st  & CC Kings KIRKAVAGH JUMILLA JW  Already a champion and deservedly so.   I have admired her on the stand on many occasions but it is only when one is fortunate enough to put hands on her does she really come into her own.  I found her truly beautiful. Every inch of her just flows from her lovely head through her wonderful front assembly , deep chest , correct ribbing , strong loins and her strong rear quarters.  She presents a complete picture of balance, quality and raciness.  I was delighted to be awarding her the CC today.  I was totally smitten by her.  2.Naylor & Morrisons ANLORY VALPOLICELLA JW.  Unfortunate to meet winner in such bloom.  This girl moved well with precision.   Pleasing in head, good topline. Well muscled throughout.  Good angulations fore and aft.  Deep chested, well sprung ribs, strong through the loin area.  Strong rear hindquarters, with short strong rear pasterns giving her that great propulsion behind.  Close up for RCC.  3. Watertons LYNWOOD STRANDS OF SILK FOR SANDSTREAM   OB(9,2) Class entry good but sadly not the depth of quality one hopes for in an Open Class 1.& RCC Powis’ SH CH AMBERWAVE SPANGLE JW  Sound, honest girl with lots to like and very little to fault.  Pleasing in outline with good topline, tailset and nicely balanced all through.  Pleasant head with good length of neck.  Straight front with good bone and neat tight feet. Deep chested, well ribbed and good strength in loin.  Strong in hindquarter.  Put down in excellent muscular order which was very evident on the move as well as on examination.  Presented and handled well. Pleased to award her the RCC.  2. Prices SEVERNVALE SEVENTH HEAVEN JW Put down in good muscular condition.  Pleasant head with good planes and raised brows.  Clean through neck and shoulder.  Deep chested, well ribbed back.  Good, strong bone.  Good angulations fore and aft.  Strong in hindquarters and good width to first and second thighs.   Moved well.  3.
