Welsh Kennel Club Critique Judge
Mrs Jean Quinn I
wish to thank the exhibitors for an excellent entry, which I
thoroughly enjoyed. Many
thanks also, to my superb stewards for their help in
enabling me to complete judging in a reasonable time, and
for the best of breed winner to take part in the group
judging. To
save time, I decided to use a voice recorder.
Unfortunately, some of my critiques are ‘drowned’
by outside noise interference.
Therefore, I apologise for the brevity of my
critiques, as they are largely from memory. Generally,
I thought the quality of the dogs very good, including many
of those not short-listed or placed on the day.
Presentation was excellent, with far fewer dogs
looking as if they had been trimmed with a razor or
clippers. Having
said that, the standard asks for moderate feathering.
I would advise those owners whose dogs have profuse
feathering, particularly on the fore-chest to consider
thinning it, because it did detract from their movement when
coming towards me. On
the other hand, I thought that some exhibits did not fit the
standard very well. My
main observations were a lack of raciness in some.
Heads plain and lacking stop, producing blank
expression. Incorrect
dentition appears to be on the increase.
What concerned me most of all, was poor conformation.
I felt that far too many animals lacked fore-chest
and had ultra narrow fronts.
Poor angulation of shoulders and hindquarters
resulting in short striding, stilted movement.
A number of exhibits also carried their tails well
above the level of the back. Class 1530 MPD (11 Entries) Abs: 1 Three promising puppies, which looked
right for their age. I
liked their type and size and little separated them. Very mature puppy.
Expertly handled.
Presented a striking outline, good fore-chest and
depth of brisket, well-sprung ribs.
Moved well. Smaller made dog, with similar
conformation as 1st. I preferred his head and
expression, but was not as collected on the move. Litter brothers, and very alike in
type. I liked
their size and balance.
Well constructed, their heads were correct, good
necks let into well laid shoulders.
Forequarters very good and they both possessed small,
very firm and tight feet.
Moved well. Medium sized dog, and typical of his
breeding. General
conformation good, and that reflected in his sound, driving
movement. I
preferred his head and expression to the 2nd
placed dog. Pleasing young dog, with lots to like
about him. Lovely
body and coat. Liked
his head and expression.
Good neck and fore-chest.
Feet could be tighter, moved ok, but lacked a little
in drive. Medium sized.
Super type. I
really liked his head, balanced as the standard requires,
correct eye shape, low set ears.
General conformation good, moved well. Similar in type, but taller.
In good coat and condition.
I thought he lacked pigment around his eyes on the
day, which spoiled his expression. I think he is an exciting young dog.
Fits the standard so well in all respects.
He is racy, balanced and full of quality.
Refined in looks, tremendously active, and gave the
impression that he could hunt all day.
It gave me great pleasure to award his 3rd
C.C. In the
challenge for best of breed, he lacked the maturity of the
bitch. He is
only three years old, and I’m sure will continue to
improve with maturity. 2nd and 3rd dogs
are excellent and I have always liked them.
They also fit the standard well with exaggeration,
both moved very well. A super class, with 7 Sh Ch present.
Fits the standard well.
Well presented and handled.
Reserve C.C.
I preferred the racier outline of the C.C. winner and
his more positive hind movement. I think this dog is worthy of gaining
his title. He is
so well made and balanced without any exaggeration.
He is so sound, but if he would only move with more
animation, I’m sure he would gain his 3rd C.C. 1st: 7575 Mr T A & Mrs J M RODDA
Ballin Tyne Home In Style TAF Three promising puppies.
Pleasing in type and conformation.
Presented in good coat and condition.
All three moved satisfactoralily. An
excellent class of juniors, including some not short-listed
or placed. Won this class with ease on the day.
Beautifully balanced, with excellent conformation.
Loved her head and expression.
Well presented and handled.
Moved happily and with drive.
With ordinary luck, should gain her title. Littlr sister to 1st.
Same good type, but her top-line was not as firm as
her sister’s. Unplaced in the previous class.
A bitch of quality, feminine with good conformation.
She did not make the most of herself standing, but on
the move she looked far better in outline, and moved with
drive. Elegant racy outline.
Pretty head and expression.
Combines quality with substance.
Moved with drive and animation. Good bitch with lots to like about her.
Did not move as well as 1st. Another
excellent class with several not short-listed or placed. 3 top class bitches with all the
necessary qualities in type, conformation and soundness to
gain their Sh Ch titles. A
difficult class to judge, as there was a huge
variation in size and type.
Some bitches that looked beautiful in profile, let
themselves down by poor movement. Bitch that combines quality with
substance. Gave
her handler a hard time, but moved soundly and with drive. Lovely type, she reminded me of her
breeder’s champion bitches she had years ago. Reserve C.C. This bitch won the class
on her superb conformation.
This was reflected by her free flowing, driving
movement that was a joy to see.
Good tail carriage.
In my opinion, her head is not her fortune, it is
balanced, but could be longer and leaner, and her expression
should be softer. I
forgave her that in favour of her other qualities. Another with very good conformation,
but carrying too much weight today.
Presents and attractive outline.
Also moved with drive and style. BEST OF BREED
and short listed in the group.
I’ve admired this bitch from the ringside, but it
wasn’t until I went over her that I appreciated her fully.
She is beautifully constructed throughout, from the
tip of her nose to the end of her tail. She combines superb
quality and type. Lovely
head with a kind intelligent expression.
Mature and in full coat, she moved effortlessly
around the ring using tail well.
I had no hesitation in awarding her BOB, but she was
pushed hard by a cracking young dog. A bitch of the highest quality. Typical
of her breeding, similar remarks as 1st apply
with regard to conformation.
However she did not move with as much drive or
enthusiasm as the winner. |
