WELKS 2003
Irish Setter (Dogs) Judge - Mrs Mary GurneyMovement in the young classes was particularly bad and not that good overall, the breed is losing the lovely Irish head and expression, many far too plain, heavy and pendulous more like an English or Gordon. Our standard states moderate/moderately 6 times, Racy and refined in looks, so many dogs too big, heavy and overdone. Too much emphasis is put on coat more is not better, moderate length is required or we go down the American road heaven help us. Minor Puppy Dog (9)1. Lucas - Braidmount Gentle Guy Straight front, deep bodied with well-sprung ribs, clean balanced head croup and tail set correct, quite steady on the move. 2. Muir’s - Grayrigge Ewan By Romarne Striking outline, good croup and tail set, wide second thigh, straight front with good bone, good texture and colour to coat. 3. Dean's - Satlas Friday Fox avec Deanshaven Puppy Dog (12) 1. Edward’s - Barleydale Lumiere This is how a puppy should look at this stage of development and not overdone as so many are. Gently slopping topline with good racy outline, wide upper thigh, pleasing expression and head proportions, lovely coat. 2. Henson’s Tatsbro Irish Mist Clean over neck and shoulder, refined head with sweet expression, balanced in body again correct for his age. 3. George’s - Bambarella Please Please Me Junior Dog (13) 1. Willett’s - Caspians Disraeli Lovely young dog, racy typical outline, well laid shoulder, deep chest and strong wide quarters, good head with lovely raised brow and soft sweet expression. 2. Heron’s Caskeys Vaguely Scottish These two will change places many times I’m sure, many of the same remarks apply just preferred above in head and shoulder placement, possess a good body very strong quarters with well bent stifles, promising young dog. 3. Crabtree’ - Mantafield Double Trouble Special Yearling Dog (9) Could easily place the first three good dogs differently on another day. 1. Gardner’s - Carnbargus Conspiracy Sound mover in super coat, deep well ribbed body, excels in hindquarters, correct croup and tail set, pleasing expression, racy typical setter. 2. Torpy’s - Follidwon Red Grouse Ideal size with lovely outline balanced and in proportion, oval refined skull gentle sweet expression, good in croup and tail set, well bent stifles, moved well. 3. Launchbury’s - Morchale Highlander Graduate Dog (18) 1. Ritchie’s Gwendariff Dom Perignon Like his name he is classy, lovely head and expression, beautiful coat in superb condition, good neck and shoulders, strong wide quarters, but when moving he is impressive straight and true in both directions in profile has reach and extension his movement is free, steady and effortless, the best mover here today, still young with a great future. 2. Bott’s - Bardonhill Abta Another good young dog, lovely typical Irish head and expression, good depth of body and spring of rib, his quarters strong and wide which produces his strong driving movement, a most attractive dog. 3. Meadows - Gwendariff Moet Et Chandon Post Graduate Dog (22)1. Kniveton’s - Orstone Intercepter Lovely dog balanced and typical, sound as bell, strong steady mover, good forehand well laid shoulders good upper arm angulation, straight in front, good sweep of stifle and wide upper thigh. Lovely head with correct oval skull gently raised brow and nicely squared muzzle of correct depth not too deep. Nice size carrying correct weight in lovely bloom just needs a little more feather to finish. 2. Lawrence’s - Sametsuz Good Fortune Of McConkeys Handsome dog with superb outline, well arched neck cleanly set into a good lay of shoulder, well angled hindquarters with strong upper thigh, showed and handles very well, moved well with drive. 3. Fry’s - Strathmead April In Paris Limit Dog (18)1. Milligan-Bott - Thendara Don Corleone Handsome dog, good bone and strong backend, pleasing head and expression, well laid shoulder and good depth of chest. He has a good outline and is balanced, but his abundance of coats masks this, would benefit from a few inches off underneath feathering, his coat colour texture and condition is lovely, worthy of his success. 2. Luto’s - Rappatty Winter Flame I love this dog he is so correct, gently flowing topline true balance, in lovely coat and condition, has a beautiful head fine oval skull correct muzzle, soft gentle expression, so sound on the move, but what a nightmare for his handler he is such a fidget, I found this a very difficult decision it was touch and go. 3. Wicks - Popeswood Pie In The Sky At Birguma Open Dog (6)My five winners are all lovely dogs and would happily put my name to the green one for all of them as they are all worthy, but it has to be on the day and some were not in tip top condition. 1. Wall’s - Hazelbeck Golden Flame This dog is so correct totally fulfils the breed standard a dog with no exaggerations, so typically Irish from his lovely head and expression to his well placed shoulder and good hindquarters. His handler must have been on a trimming and grooming course his presentation is so improved and he’s been to weight watchers what a difference. His lovely coat gleamed in the sunlight he is very sound not flashy on the move, have always thought highly of him a great pleasure to award him this 2nd CC he was BOB. 2. Lucas - Sh Ch Amberlight Firecracker Balanced and racy dog with lovely gently flowing topline, good sweep of stifle and good 1st and 2nd thigh, croup and tailset good, lovely typical Irish head with soft wistful expression, last time I judged him did not acquit himself on the move but today he excelled true driving hind movement with good reach and extension, in lovely coat and condition delighted to award him the Res CC. 3. Willett & Oakley’s - Sh Ch Caspians Palmerston
