Dog Critique Despite the adverse and snowy weather conditions, the committee of this society had obviously worked very hard to overcome all problems and stage this excellently run show. Thank-you to all the exhibitors too for the wonderful entry dogs which was a pleasure to judge and to my hardworking stewards, Diane MacDonald and Lesley Armstrong Rogers. Special thanks also to Diane Bridgewater who helped me to get to the show despite a power cut and blocked roads back home in Lincolnshire. Best in show was Thirwells Sh.Ch.Shandwick Amethyst at Ferndel, Reserve Best in Show Hawkins Heneleas Flirting Around JW who gained her well deserved title on the day, and Best Puppy was Willets Caspians Disraeli, Congatulations to you all. Minor Puppy (17 : 7 Absent)
Puppy Dog (20:3) 1. Willet CASPIANS DISRAELI. I thought this young man looked outstanding today. Went on to win two more classes and thoroughly deserved to do so. 11 mths. So elegant over the head and shoulders. Beautifully chiselled head and correct eye shape. Carrying just the right amount of body condition. Sound over both front and hindquarters, and a lovely flowing topline, excellent set-on of tail. Moved steadily and shown in excellent coat and well presented. BPD & BPIS 2. Levick CORRICAS GIOVANNI. 11 mths. This dog moved really well with strong driving movement from very well muscled hindquarters in hard muscular condition for a baby. Good set-on of tail. A little bit throaty over the neckline for me but had the softest, kindest expression and his gently wagging tail was so nice to see. 3. McAvoy CYMBELINE FISEAL 10 mths. A little younger and less mature than above two but possesses the most lovely outline and moved well. He just needs time to body but this will come and is in no way a fault at this tender age. Elegant over neck and shoulders. Lovely chiselled head. Neat feet.
Veteran Dog (5:1) 1. Herons Sh.Ch.CASKEYS BLARNEY Lovely 9yrs boy shown in good dark coat and excellent condition. Very elegant over neck and shoulders. Beautiful head and expression. Firm topline and strongly made hindquarters 2. Edwards Sh.Ch.DELSANTO LUKE Beautifully constructed, well coated 10yr old. Good depth of chest. Firm gently sloping topline. Handled and showed to advantage. 3. Lee BURRENMIST LORD OF THE DANCE 7 year old. Smaller type than two above. Excels in hind angulation and good clean lines over neck and shoulders.
Junior (18:1) 1. Herons CASKEYS VAGUELY SCOTTISH At just 12 months of age this boy was giving a lot away in age to his competitors. Just my type of dog being medium in size and without any exaggeration. He has a beautiful outline and correct bend of stifle. Well set-on tail, elegant reach of neck. I liked his head and earset. Showed in beautiful coat and condition and moved well. Was just too immature for the Sp.Yearling Class though. 2. Davies CARNBAGUS COLORADO this dog almost lost his place, because he was a little apprehensive in the showring especially when moving. Unfortunately the heaters were rather noisy when it was his turn to move. However I forgave him this because I loved his type and really liked his outline especially over neck and shoulders. Strong, well angulated hindquarters and neat feet 3. Boutelle & Humphrey IXIA TIMBER a taller type of dog this than my first two, he really moved well, especially when viewed in profile going round the ring. Excels in topline. Elegant head carriage and shown in good coat and condition.
Special Yearling (19:5) 1. Torphy FOLLIDOWN RED GROUSE Beautifully balanced boy who excels in firm topline. Correct bend of stifle. Shown in excellent coat and condition. Moved very well. Lovely head and expression and good set on of ear. He is well bodied and sound over front and rear. 2. Ritchie GWENDARIFF DOM PERIGNON JW a very different from above. This exhibitor excels in presentation and handling of all her exhibits Strong excellently angulated hindquarters and tight feet. Good firm topline and moved soundly. I just preferred type of above. 3. Park & Hough LESTANNONS MICKEY BLUE EYES Slightly heavier in type than above two. Showed in excellent coat and condition. Lovely head and expression and moved okay.
Maiden (11:2) 1. Willets CASPIANS DISRAELI 2. Crabtree MANTAFIELD DOUBLE TROUBLE was VHC in Junior. This dog has come on a lot recently shown in lovely dark coat good condition Pleasant in head . He was well handled and moved soundly. 3. Schofield CHIRGWIN WILD ABOUT THE BOY was Reserve in Puppy This young man was giving a lot away in maturity in this class. Just needs time to body and coat up.
Novice (18:6) 1. Willets CASPIANS DISRAELI 2. Mulcahy CRAYTHORNLEY MAGIC STAR placed in Sp.Yearling and pushed the winner hard in this class. He is really just my type of young dog, already showing promise and only needing time to mature and come to his best. Medium sized with lovely head and expression. Nicely made over his hindquarters and correct set-on of tail. 3. Crabtree MANTAFIELD DOUBLE TROUBLE
Undergraduate (13:5) 1. Lewis & Story LYNWOOD PIONEER OF SEADOG Loved this boy. He has the most beautiful head and expression coupled with an elegant really classic outline a beautiful gently sloping topline. I forgave him his ‘winter nose’ today. Strangely, his owner missed out entering the next class and he appeared in Post Grad which was just to hard for him at this stage in his development. 2. Butler COVARNEY ENZO OF RUBYMOON JW Excellently presented boy in full coat and a credit to his owner. Quite a lot more mature and a larger type than above. He excelled in a clean reach of neck and moved soundly. 3. Stevenson LOCHLORIAN INSPECTOR MORSE AMONG ANDLEY This boy was a bit of a handful today and gave his handler a hard time. Again a slightly bigger type than first. Very strong over his hindquarters. Elegant over neckline and moved okay.
Graduate (12:2) 1. Bailey COVARNEY MONELLO JW Lovely medium sized, dark coated dog. Mature in body, sound front angulation clean over neckline and attractive in head. Balanced outline, good tailset and moved very well. 2. Weller STRATHMEAD APRIL IN PARIS Super boy –a dog I have liked from a puppy.. Slightly larger type than above and shown in full coat. did not move quite as well as above today though. 3. Ritchie GWENDARIFF DOM PERIGNON JW
Post Graduate (26:9) one of the strongest classes today. 1. Rielly BAIBREEZE PEER GYNT AT SUMMERGATE I have admired this boy from the ringside many times and how he has matured since last year. He is just my ideal type not being ‘overdone’ in any way. Moved soundly and showed and presented immaculately in excellent coat and condition. He is of the medium size I prefer and is elegant and balanced in outline. A lovely head and expression completed the picture. 2. Kniveton ORSTONE INTERCEPTOR Slightly bigger type and giving his handle a challenge today. Good strong hindquarters and moved well using his tail 3. Urwin BURRENMIST COPPER BEECH AT ELANJAY Sound and workmanlike boy with a firm topline. Very sound in front with correct reach of neck. Moved well to gain his place in this hard class.
Mid Limit (11:1) 1. Edwards CEDRUS SOLITAIRE Being of a quite different type from my own, I was surprised I liked this dog so much, but he really is so sound to go over. Presented to perfection and in full coat and outstanding condition this fully mature dog is attractive in head , has good body properties and nicely constructed over the front and rear quarters. 2. Kniveton SHANDWICK DIAMOND AT ORSTONE JW Not quite the maturity of above at the moment. Lovely head and eye and moved well. Was giving his handler a hard time today though. 3. Watt SHENANAGIN SHAREHOLDER Again all this dog lacks is maturity for this class but he does have time on his side. Elegant and nicely constructed throughout with a beautiful head showing excellent chiselling, he just needs finish overall to complete the picture.
Limit (17:5) 1. Wicks POPESWOOD PIE IN THE SKY AT BIRGUMA In full coat and and outstanding condition, Very strong hindquarters and well developed 2nd thigh. whilst his head is attractive I wouldn’t like any more depth of stop here. He moved very well to win this hard class. 2. Gurney DANAWAY FORTUNE TELLER JW. This dog has been a favourite of mine since a young puppy. He is outstanding in outline when set up possessing a lovely topline head and earset although at the moment just lacking the maturity and coat finish to carry him through to top honours. 3. Pollard GRAYRIGGE GLENAMOY JW Larger type boy in outstanding coat and condition. Not the work in his head of above. Good in front with clean neckline and strong over hindquarters.
Open (11:1) An honour to judge this star-studded class with 7 worthy show champions present. 1. Thirwells Sh.Ch.SHANDWICK AMETHYST AT FERNDEL This dog has improved so much since he gained his title. I felt that last year he looked just a little too young to stand up in the open class but now everything has changed. Today he looked outstanding. Turned out in full coat and superbly presented completed by a wagging tail this medium sized dog is just my ideal. Beautifully chiselled head and melting expression . Superb in outline both when standing and moving. Lovely balanced hindquarters which he could really use. He was handled to perfection. I was pleased to award him the CC and in full agreement with my co-judge he was awarded Best in Show. 2. Lucas Sh.Ch. AMBERLIGHT FIRECRACKER A great favourite of mine. I awarded him his first Res.CC after which he went on to be one of the top winning dogs of recent years. I haven’t changed my opinion of him at all. Lovely in outline, beautiful in head and moved well. Just not in his best coat today – however I still thought he had enough in hand to award him the Res.CC. 3. Willet Sh.Ch. CASPIANS PALMERSTON A beautiful, most worthy title holder, in full coat today. Impressive in outline with strong hindquarters. Again, lovely in head and expression. I just wish he had moved with a little more enthusiasm today.
