WOLVERHAMPTON W. v BORO (17/04/2004)

Bernie's Man Of The Match.

No-one was thought to have performed sufficiently well on the day to deserve the award.

Result--Wolverhampton W. 2 Boro 0

It’s three o’clock so, without further ado,
Let’s cross over immediately to Molineux,
To play Wolves, who are bottom of the league by a mile,
While Boro try to finish their season in style,

The game is a sell-out and conditions ideal,
As Wolves seek today to overcome their ordeal,
Led by Paul Ince, their captain and well-known destroyer,
Who’ll be trying his best against his former employer.

Camara’s lightning speed had the Boro outstripped,
Then as he entered the box he unfortunately slipped,
He danced past two red shirts as if they weren’t there,
And though Ugo then blocked, there’s a warning: beware!

With just four minutes gone and fans feeling upbeat,
The delivery of Mendi’s first corner was sweet,
Q’s header starts a scramble that’s lashed clear by Cort,
So Boro’s first genuine chance came to nought.

Newton ran down the left like a real thoroughbred,
Then planted the ball on to Kennedy’s head,
He cleared the bar and must have then felt a berk,
For not having at least made the goalkeeper work.

Wolves now have a great chance, which somehow they fritter,
When Newton again misses an absolute sitter,
It was rank bad defending, I really must say,
And the Wolves man, without doubt, should have put it away.

A clear foul by Zenden that was really unsightly,
Means a free kick for Wolves who have started quite brightly,
But the wall did its job; it’s a hard nut to crack,
And this led to a promising Boro counter-attack.

Juninho then lifts a great ball in to Macca,
Then his ball on the Wolves’ six-yard line was a cracker,
The way to goal was open; their ‘keeper rooted to the ground,
It needed just a tap-in but that touch could not be found.

From almost seventy yards Mendi sent in a free kick,
Which nearly fooled the ‘keeper, who had to move really quick,
He got a finger to the ball as it looked well on its way,
And parried it to safety and eventually out of play.

Mendi took the corner, which turned out to be a flop,
When Ugo, standing six-yards out, headed over the top,
He’d be really disappointed, being the quickest to respond,
But it appeared he’d left behind his little magic wand.

Now it’s Macca v the ‘keeper but he’s not up to the job,
With Jones standing off his line, Macca looks for a lob,
What a wonderful opportunity but he totally miscued,
And, as ever, one now wonders, will this eventually be rued?

The ball bounced out to Nemeth who’d the chance to make us merry,
But he failed to take advantage of our second bite at the cherry,
And we quickly paid the penalty as one invariably does,
As Wolves went and scored through Cort, to give their fans a buzz.

Mendieta’s great ball in was then seized by their goalie,
For no-one took a gamble and we reacted far too slowly,
Having gone a goal down our pressure needs to be sustained,
And McClaren, on the sideline, is looking desperately pained.

It’s been a disappointing first half with the Boro looking jaded,
And Wolves are worthy of their lead in a game that they have shaded,
No doubt Steve McClaren will have plenty to discuss,
For the outcome of this ‘battle’ now looks really ominous.

----------

We are looking at this game now with a little trepidation,
As we’ve recovered just once from this current situation,
So what we’re asking of the Boro is the speediest response,
For we’ve won: from behind: over two years, just the once.

Mills is moving forward to the accompaniment of booing,
But could he possibly be the man to lead to Wolves’ undoing?
Then Camara takes on our defence: this man is like greased lightning,
He’s so awfully direct; defenders sometimes find him frightening.

Wolves are once more on attack and danger’s looming large,
And again it’s that man, Camara, who leads the sudden charge,
He quickly picks out Cort with Boro noticeably rocking,
But Ugo rescues once again, by brilliantly blocking.

Now it’s the turn of Macca to have the Wolves running scared,
Then he tried out the impossible when, perhaps, he should have squared,
He at least won for us a corner that sadly carried no threat,
As it ended with a foul on the Wolves’ guardian of the net.

Boro now push forward as they start to pressurise,
Trying to test the ‘keeper as they seek to equalise,
He looked a bag of nerves in the ensuing rough and tumble,
Causing one almighty scramble after a most amazing fumble.

Juninho picked out Macca with extraordinary precision,
His great ball demonstrated the most remarkable vision,
He should have surely scored but his finish was the dregs,
When he messed it up by striking against the goalkeeper’s legs.

However, Wolves are rocking as Boro have now upped their tails,
Their fans are so nervous and they’re biting their nails,
That wonderful chance went begging and might leave us all bitter,
And Macca will be well aware he’d missed an absolute sitter.

Boro were almost caught again as they sought to hammer on,
When a fast and frantic scramble left the ball with Cameron,
The shot was curling goalwards from the foot of the marauder,
Which brought from Boro’s ‘keeper, a save of the highest order.

A Boro change is imminent as we draw the ref’s attention,
And Job replaces Nemeth to try and add a new dimension,
Then, within about a minute, the game goes further down the hill,
When another goal, out of the blue, means Wolves have two and Boro nil.

Camara had his back to goal then tried an overhead volley,
Which flew in off the upright to leave the Boro melancholy,
McClaren can’t believe it and he’s pulling out his hair,
Then he walks straight up the tunnel in a fit of deep despair.

The strike was most spectacular but he had no right to score,
If Boro now climb this mountain, I’ll kiss my mother-in-law,
However, credit goes to Camara, who showed such great invention,
And this game’s now well beyond our reach through a moment’s inattention.

A Mendi free kick found the net and got the Boro fans singing,
But Ugo’d obviously used his hand and I’m sure it’ll still be stinging,
The ‘goal’ of course was ruled out: Ugo’s booked for all his trouble,
Then Riggott wiped out Camara to earn a speedy Boro double.

Boro are certainly struggling to turn this game around,
Butler missed a sitter with defenders nowhere to be found,
If we could only hear the whistle to end the misery,
For Butler knows, and so do I, he should have made it three.

Loyal fans are looking on in total disbelief,
Longing for the signal, to end this awful day of grief,
Then Boateng pulled down Alex Rae, for a free kick from the spot,
Though Schwarzer made a wondrous save, the Boro had lost the plot.

So it was three more points for Wolves with which to keep their hopes aglow,
But sadly, for the Boro, it was another day of woe,
We never got to grips with things and fired just blanks throughout,
It really was, if truth be told, not much to shout about.

Today’s display by Boro, was anything but polished,
In a game we really thought we’d win, we were totally demolished,
Three points flew out the window in a frightful sacrifice,
And we were also CORT on CAMARA, not once, my friends, but twice.
